Agree but that's massive to aim for....I still think you have to steadily build it and you have to question how will it impact on the existing club competition, players and AFL expansion into QLD and NSW. As stated above by a number of posters (including you Phil) if Victoria came out and smashed NSW by a huge margin it would be a huge negative for not only SOO but also the game in NSW and Qld.I’m saying if they are going to bring it back, do it right.
Carve out a 4 week window during middle of the year.
NSW, QLD, VIC, SA and WA. Every team plays each other once. Best 2 teams at end play a one off game for the title.
If you did it like that, it would be pure magic.
On the other hand SOO could be a massive boost for expansion....of course you need to have critical numbers of star players for NSW or Qld to be competitive but....currently due to the draft , for example, star players get drafted around the country to play for any club.....very few casual observers in NSW would know that Tom Hawkins, Taylor Walker, Isaac Smith, Luke Bruest and a number of others come from NSW.
But take eg. Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk.....they were superstars in NRL and and lauded in QLD because they were able to play for QLD in SOO, yet their club was in another state. In other words they promoted NRL on 2 levels.... Imagine in SOO in AFL if Wayne Carey or Shane Crawford and a number of others could have represented NSW.....even not playing for Sydney Swans would give AFL a higher profile in Sydney.
In my view thats why it is worth aiming to bring SOO back to AFL.......you just have to do it in a very considered way otherwise it could be a retrograde step in terms of growing the game in NSW and QLD.
