I’m saying if they are going to bring it back, do it right.

Carve out a 4 week window during middle of the year.

NSW, QLD, VIC, SA and WA. Every team plays each other once. Best 2 teams at end play a one off game for the title.

If you did it like that, it would be pure magic.
Agree but that's massive to aim for....I still think you have to steadily build it and you have to question how will it impact on the existing club competition, players and AFL expansion into QLD and NSW. As stated above by a number of posters (including you Phil) if Victoria came out and smashed NSW by a huge margin it would be a huge negative for not only SOO but also the game in NSW and Qld.

On the other hand SOO could be a massive boost for expansion....of course you need to have critical numbers of star players for NSW or Qld to be competitive but....currently due to the draft , for example, star players get drafted around the country to play for any club.....very few casual observers in NSW would know that Tom Hawkins, Taylor Walker, Isaac Smith, Luke Bruest and a number of others come from NSW.

But take eg. Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk.....they were superstars in NRL and and lauded in QLD because they were able to play for QLD in SOO, yet their club was in another state. In other words they promoted NRL on 2 levels.... Imagine in SOO in AFL if Wayne Carey or Shane Crawford and a number of others could have represented NSW.....even not playing for Sydney Swans would give AFL a higher profile in Sydney.

In my view thats why it is worth aiming to bring SOO back to AFL.......you just have to do it in a very considered way otherwise it could be a retrograde step in terms of growing the game in NSW and QLD.

Sorry, I looked up where they were born not their junior clubs. Cameron as in Jeremy? I named Jeremy for Vic and Darcy for WA. Also I thought Charlie was drafted from Swan Districts?

Writer of this article says place a condition on the Victorian team that they must have eight players aged 23 or under to try to make the other sides competitive.

Meh.

Not like previous SOO games haven't had their fingers on the scale to try and balance things up before.

e.g. Most SOO games had the Vics playing away (back when travel was less common and thus a much bigger deal).

Humphries and Curtin are some young guys that will be pushing for a spot in the WA side.
Nice sides be hard to beat the vics need good weather and the aboriginal boys to light it up to be a chance.

Ah Chee could be a chance as well, has put together some great seasons.

Zac Merret gets a spot in the Vic side surely.
Oh and WA aren't getting within 10 goals of the Vics. The whole exercise seems a waste of time.

It's the x factor players for WA that might give them a chance. You'd need guys like Bolton, Pickett, Bobby Hill etc to really step up and have dominant games because Victoria are just too strong on every line.

Ah yes, of course. Merrett can take Libba's spot.

Home ground advantage obviously helps, but Victoria are clearly the better overall team. WA would need a spark from their x factor players + the crowd to get involved to have a chance.

As always with any nominated team, you need to take out 3-6 players who will be 'injured' or otherwise unavailable. (quite a few will have had an off season op for some niggle, and aren't up to match fitness yet...at least not according to their club).

This is where Vic really kills...depth.

State of Origin's return seems to be officially not too far off.

'surprise state'.

The only state that would surprise is Victoria.

Other states would struggle to match the Vics at home, they'd have no chance if they had to play it in Vic, and having the sandgropers thrashed in the opening match would really destroy the concept.

The certainties.
1. The Vic team will play away.
2. The AFL will want the game to be close, in order to push the concept going forward, and will make decisions accordingly.

It will last until the first knee reconstruction then everyone will remember why it was killed off last time.

SOO hasnt really matter since the 1970s.
Its a preseason game. Can be thought of a preseason practice for players.

Errol Gulden was badly injured in a preseason game last February.

Do we now cancel all preseason games as a result?

For clubs as a part of prep for the real season? No.

For eyeballs on tv in a meaningless display? Yes.

It happened more and more in the dying years of SOO with coaches keeping their stars out of the games due to injury risk.

I really hope they do a NSW vs QLD game. If they do not it is a massive missed opportunity.
I think a competitive game of a traditional footy state vs a non footy state would turn people's heads to help realise that footy isn't just a Southern State sport.

Queensland vs SA or WA would be really good games on paper.

And that's why it will likely fail this time if it gets repeated. One off, sure, it will probably draw some interest as a freak show.
But to be ongoing, it needs structure and to be taken seriously, and not just a practice match with extra media. The clubs allowing that second part is (imo, sadly) not going to happen.
