Strategy Changes: Round 17 Sydney Swans vs. Fremantle Dockers

The midfield remains an issue for me. Erasmus is 190cm, but apart from height, the jury is still out for me whether he has the other tricks required to be a good/v good/excellent midfielder.

Interestingly, we have gone from a club in the 2010s that was lauded for having a bunch of giant midfielders, to one with a bunch with under average height.

So while I don’t necessarily have a problem with JOM coming in this week, it doesn’t resolve the longer term issue - particularly if Hayden Young

O'Meara has to have the biggest gap in what Fremantle fans think of him compared to neutral fans.

Lot of our fans can't stand him, yet most other fans from other clubs think he's really good still.

The knee injury that caused him to miss 2 full seasons basically destroyed his lateral movement and breakaway speed unfortunately. he was never the same afterwards.

The issue is that he still tries to burn players off or get past them like he still has that ability.

JOM was one of our best players when we played Sydney in Round 2 and was the leading possession winner on the ground with 32 and got 5 Coaches votes.

He was in reasonably good form before getting injured.

They must think he is ready to play and adds some experience to the team.

Whenever he gets it a lot. We lose. He crimps backwards and sideways. When he drives forward out of stoppage he gets caught, he’s too slow. The idea he’s a big bodied mid is ludicrous, his broken tackle rate would be huge. He rarely ties up players or creates turn over from chase down tackles. His trade mark move is sticking an arm out while he gets side stepped and giving a jog effort chase.

I’d love to know our win % with him in the team vs out of the team, vs him as sub.

Most would have done well on Heeney, he was hampered by injury early season and well down on form. He’s back now and moving much better.

It’s like when Jackson dominated Rhys Stanley in the ruck when Stanley was injured. The coaches thought the same would happen end of 2024 when Jackson was cooked and Stanley was firing. I stand by the opinion if Liam Reidy played that game we win and play finals.

10-3 (77% win rate) without him.

2-1 (67% win rate) when he’s the sub.

Not great reading for JOM enthusiasts.

Thought we nailed the selections last week, back to questionable selections this week.

Great to see Pearce back but with his lower leg issues and the dodgy SCG turf surely he could’ve waited a week. Swans aren’t stacked for dangerous talls. Much more worried about Papley/Heeney/Hayward so no Walker is disappointing but I haven’t watched WAFL the past few weeks so I’m guessing he’s not 100% yet.

JOM in is uninspiring, I don’t think you can play Johnson, Ras and JOM in the same team, too many one-paced midfielders. Hopefully he assumes Fyfe’s sub role and one of the other two take Heeney.

Still a strong enough team to get the win and continue our SCG winning streak.

I remember JOM gathering having the ball 30 times and being slow to make decisions, holding up play in transition, and handballing to feet or players under pressure.

Part of the reason we lost is because he was by far our most prolific mid that day. And then people used that game to claim he was in good form cos he had 30 touches on the stat sheet.

Perhaps with speed up of our ball movement rather than trying to lock it up be might be a beneficiary as he is one of the better skilled in the team by hand and foot. Jom is one of the coaches favourites, if he is fit he plays.

Agreed and I’m a huge JOM critic. If he’s playing I would like the ball in his hand at the end of a 3 chain handball that has him clear and delivering a lace out pass to a leading player.
Not inside with dinky handball back to someone under pressure.

NB I’m not down on JOM necessarily. Just wondering, as the 23 includes 8 FWDs. Other option is Voss but seems less likely?
