He's finally starting to look settled in that #3 spot, which is the only positive to take out of the batting performance.

The openers are a huge issue and I'm not sure what the solution is. Khawaja is finished, and Konstas is nowhere near ready, but who fills the void? No one is really putting their hand up.
Ussie will be finished if gets dropped, but they are hardly likely to do that at the start of an Ashes series when they are guessing if anyone will be better than him. He will stay in the side and the other opener will be anyone who looks half decent in the build up.

For me and I know people will hate it, but despite how terrible he looked in the WTC Lab at least lasted 10 plus overs doing it. I feel as a stop gap assuming he gets some runs at the start of the year, has to be there. I wouldn't be against Renshaw put it's pick your poison there. The younger alternatives are not ready and Harris is woeful he's not an option.

I know that Ian Chappell used to tell Doug Walters to bat the same way, whether it was 4/40 or 4/400. The object was to remove any doubts he may have had about how to play. Maybe Cummins and Carey may have a similar agreement.
I agree.
Head has that license to take the game on. Maybe Carey, too, but I'd have liked some caution from Alex given the predicament.

Labs I still in the mix Luke going to be interesting where he bats for qld opener or three .. I would send marnus and Konstas on the Aus a tour of India in Sept then back for the shield games for those two

Obvious thing the selectors will do is replace Konstas with Labaschagne and no other changes.
Top.3 looks shaky.
I'd be going 2 new openers (see how Green goes tomorrow) and looking closely at
Kelly way Bancroft Renshaw Hunt even a Whiteman etc for the Ashes.

I'd tell him and the qld selectors to open. Green-Smith-Head- Webster are not moving. It's the openers that are the issue, we either have to bite the bullet on young ones and I'm hesitant to go Kellaway just yet for instance. Bancroft won't be picked for obvious reasons. The two stop gaps are Renshaw or Labs, it's probably pick your poison a bit, but Labs at least did soak the balls up opening, yes he looked ugly but he was facing near the best pace attack in world cricket in SA.

I think greenie is lock for the top six come the ashes that innings on that deck was really good .. the position in the batting order is debatable

I would give Konstas the first few tests at least. No way an we go two new ones and if anything there's more merit in dropping Khawaja, keeping Konstas and have an experienced head at the other end like Lab or Renshaw. Two rookie openers is a big no no for me in the Ashes, after the Ashes sure

Look I'd prefer the guy at 4, but he's starting to make 3 his own, it's not much but he's averaging high 30's in the last two tests.

No one is a bigger Konstas fan then me. Loved his tactical adjustments boxing day and approach.
But that's 10 innings and 1 score above 25.
It's really pushing it to continue. Hopefully on a couple of years when he's worked on his game.
Kahwaja is cooked

So do I would rather smudge 3 green 4 come ashes

And I have this nasty feeling that Macca is going to have marnus back at 3 and green to open with ussie and Sam missing . McDonald before this series in an interview did say he rated greens technique as an opener

That worries me

Don't disagree with Konstas form, but once they made the call they are giving it more than three tests. He scores anything in the first few shield games he's playing. Khawaja is the issue and that's the discussion. Gut says they keep the openers at least till the second test.

If McDonald does that he should walk on the spot. Green is not and never will be an opener

If last summer is anything to go by batting position doesn't matter. The new Kookaburra was seaming as much at 40 overs as the start of the day.

Fair point, but even with Dougie I think he would have been fairly circumspect three balls into his innings in that situation. :)

The Konstas hype far outweighs his ability to handle quality test match bowling.

Hard to tell with these pitches, but it is obvious he is 12-18 months away. He needs that middle ground between your invention shots and defence. He'd do worse than watch Ben Duckett a bit, who actually has a solid base when he bats despite the Bazball.

Don’t want him watching any of the brainwashed baseball types.

Maybe Root, because he was around before all this shit.

Duckett actually is a good example on how you can use these shots but have a very good set base

Where are the Cam Green haters? Guy is the only one flying the flag.
There’s no hater’s, far from it - but there’s questions, serious questions about his suitability to bat at No.3

Same as those that questioned Konstas’ technique or lack there of.

There’s no way George Bailey has the nuts to drop both openers for the start of the Asges but you couldn’t pick either of them because one’s finished and the other is a million miles from it.
