Gettable -

  • Jaspa Fletcher will soon sign an extension until 2030 (taking him through to FA)
  • Not a club out there that doesn't think Oscar Allen is going to Brisbane
  • Mentioned Draper/Reilly O'Brien interest
  • Want to keep Starcevich, multiple different offers, salary cap manoeuvring is happening.

Starc needs to be careful. He's one bad headknock away from potentially being retired. Did anyone watch the Carlton game where his head bounced off the turf after a tackle? He went down for a moment holding his head, before he got up again. I don't want to say it, because I hope he has a long career and he's one of our best players, but he seems like a ticking time bomb to me. Maybe saying that, the club are being careful as well and offering him less years than he would like.
I noticed that too.
It was not much of a bump in the average overall type of physical contact the head is likely to get during a game.

Maybe wear a helmet for some minor head contact stuff for confidence.
The helmet won't protect him from a concussion if the contact is sufficient though.

Yes. Heart in mouth stuff. It was his wincing face that reminded me of the Sydney game.

Personally i think he is absolutely crazy to have not signed something. He is likely one decent head-knock away from retirement. He will not earn a dollar after October. We can offer him 3 years with zero worries because of the afl payout rule (no cap count for 3 years after concussion retirement). So surely he could get us to offer him say 4 years and we are only 'risking' one year. He would conservatively be on what 700k? It's very hard to earn $2.8m in the real world.

I honestly just wish him well wherever he plays. It's hard to watch players go through concussion issues and he seems like a good humble bloke. But the reality is he can't sign a contract NOW with another club, so if i were him i would sign as long as i could at the lions and know I have secured my future whatever happens.

I think he'll re-sign in the end.

If he plays out the situation in his head, the new club giving him long contract would want value for money and expect him to go hard, overachieve in certain aspects from the get go. Our approach would be a lot more methodical considering Starce's concussion history.

From what I understand you guys have come over the top. I saw a post on FB predicting where each player will end up and they had Brisbane as the most likely landing spot for Draper.View attachment 2369063
I think many on here, including myself would prefer that not be the case.

I'm surprised he's not wearing a helmet already.

I wonder in this day and age whether it would be possible to hide minor symptoms from clubs.
With Starce in his current predicament where one more could put him out, I think he is better off signing as soon as he can, no matter what the club has been offered.

I think you could hide it, but players would be very unlikely to given all of the retired players coming out with major issues

I can imagine a world in which a player has a contract offer, says he will think about it, then has some minor symptoms, hides them (can't train today calf is tight), signs contract, then a couple of weeks later says he has had symptoms. But not hide them and keep playing.

Ultimately Cleric I think we are a little concerned with Oscar’s longevity and need someone else who is ready to go and with Smiths injury concerns are not sure we can rely on him just yet.
Most really hope we can keep him though because when on the park, he shows a bit especially in the ruck and he is right at an age where he could really take a leap forward if he can stay in the park.
Draper would be last on my list tbh.
But the club knows better than I.

He looked a solitary figure after the game with BT too and just seems a bit torn as to what to do.
After that knock in the game, there were a couple of moments I am sure he would like back and appears to be lacking a bit of confidence at the moment.

Interesting. Well I guess either way, he will be a good pick up for us or you. I like the guy, I think he will level up in a good system which both us and you seem to both be running these days.

Jaspa "very close" to a 4 year extension according to Twomey.
Wonderful news , a very important player and possible future captain .Love him .

Yep, certainly noticed that as well, and had that split second “oh no” moment.

There's no evidence I've seen that show that soft helmets do anything to prevent brain injury
To be fair to GenericUsername202 he was just responding to my post about wearing a helmet for confidence

I said in part, "The helmet won't protect him from a concussion" and they replied, "I'm surprised he's not wearing a helmet already."

Was a painter, not sure if he still is. Did two jobs for us about 15 - 20 years ago. Really nice bloke and a decent painter. Still had the same hair do. Said people still stopped him in the street and asked him about his career. Picked up the seconds medal one year and played in a ground final in which they got pummeled by tigers. Happy to have a laugh about both.

I don't think it's right that we have three years free of salary cap pain if a player retires from concussions. I think there is a sliding scale along the lines of 100% in the year they go out, 90% the next year, then down to 50% and lower until about five years out when it's all on the club. I'm sure I heard that on SEN, possibly Cal Twomey on fireball a month or so ago. The player gets paid either way, this is about how much cap space the club gets...

Saw him get of his van in paint stained overalls outside Coles Collingwood a few months ago, still looks fit.

Clubs to get cap relief for medically retired players
For AFL players affected, the guidelines have two key features – the ability to gradually pay the negotiated financial settlement with the player over the period of the contract and also maximum thresholds of salary cap relief within three years following the retirement.
In the year immediately following the retirement, the max threshold will be 90 per cent, the second year the max threshold will be 75 per cent and in the third year the max threshold will be 50 per cent.
But the AFL has said longer contracts beyond three years will not come under the guidelines.
