Review R21: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Hawthorn

Fog did a few things. The first goal, the goal assist to Soligo were two bits of great bit of play. Just felt he struggled to get into the game last night.

But hey - if you don't think Peatling played a terrible game you either didnt watch the game or haven't seen much of Peatling so far this year.
Be careful. He will give you a "laugh".

I thought it was his foot again like the stress fracture thing returned. I'm not sure it was just cramp
It may be his foot again I suppose but the reason he couldn't move was absolutely definitely cramps.

The funny
Ginnivans team mate shoving him telling him to pull his head in after he kicked a goal in the third after Ginnivan shows his ear to the crowd.
Nah that's how Will Day fires up his team mates. He does it regularly, gets the blood pumping.

Port is going to get massacred. The only way Port "wins' is if Kenny to remains in Geelong and does not return to Adelaide.

This doesn't help us, though. Except maybe for the LOL's. shrugs 🤷‍♀️

If you look at Geelong's run home, it's hard to see them losing a game. However, it really doesn't impact us. We should still finish top two.
Geelong are going to be hell bent on a) making up percentage and b) getting Jezza to 100. Port have literally no reason to fight. Played their Grand Final last week and are playing teams around us on the ladder. I would be surprised if Port get within 100.

The Advertiser put it in the Champion Data Stats Box below the articles.

AFC: 22 FK (6 D50, 14 MID, 2 F50)
HFC: 21 FK (3 D50, 12 MID, 6 F50)

To be fair SOME of those were clear as day - Keane panicked and held Gunston too many times. What annoyed me more was was “arm free” HTB paid against us twice and the same thing let go for the Hawks on centre wing
I know the umps are going to pay what they want, but I'd love for us to spend some time on that in the review and try and reduce the chances of them paying it. If you're tackled and have an arm free, just throw it down on the boot. Even if you miss it's still an attempt if you do it quick enough. Hawthorn were elite at pinning one arm and the umpires were tripping over themselves to pay it.

The Great:

We passed a test against one of the finest tactical coaches around. Don't underestimate this.

Dawson will be AA captain. Curtin will win the RS. Tex is a legend. Worrell should be AA.

Taylor's best game, maybe Milera's best game and special mention to Bond who stood up to a baptism of fire in the first quarter.

Another complete team performance. Too many individuals to mention and this is why we're in contention.

2nd quarter reminded me of the beginning of the last quarter against Brisbane. When we get in that zone I don't think anyone can touch us. We seem to be able to absorb the best of what the oppo throws at us, then go to another level.

Bad:

Another poor period like the Melbourne game where we just got smashed and couldn't handle the pressure. Brisbane and Collingwood won't let us back in if that happens.

Cut Cook some slack coming back from a nasty head knock. His game against the Bulldogs was enough to earn him an opportunity for a few weeks.

Offensively he's first class but Keane would want to work on not panicking in one on ones. Good teams will try and isolate him. Gunston was very crafty in exploiting that though.

Ugly:

The "unsociable Hawks" bullshit. The goal celebrations from players whose celebrations are their only redeeming feature.

I'll be kind and say inconsistency and poor standard of umpiring, particularly for a Friday night when we're supposed to get the best.

Eh, I wouldn't call Keanes panic. He tried to scrag his opponent (which is something we routinely dare umpires to call us out on) and just got caught.

Good. Excellent team effort across the board. Seeing Cunston and Ginnivan trudge off the ground as losers was the best part! Love the move of Curtin into the middle in the last. That's so un-Nicks like....and it shows we have confidence in Dan to not only match it with the opposition but to win the bloody thing. Nice option to have up our sleeve for finals!

Bad. Not much. Cook just didn't look like it. Keane giving away a few frees and his obligatory short pass to a player under pressure - although he was still pretty solid esp in the last qtr.

Ugly. Umps. Not sure if my neighbours will be talking to me after last night (although I'm hoping our double-glazed windows kept the ranting, expletive laden noise down a bit).

The atmosphere in the last quarter was electric. Can't wait for the Collingwood game.
Could've gone as GA last night but had no one to watch the kids (wife was visiting a friend), and also I've never seen us beat Hawthorn in person so didn't want to jinx us 😂

We have seats for Collingwood though, going to be massive. Not sure how often Collingwood have to deal with such a firmly 1 sided crowd that's not on their side. Hopefully it gets to the Jenkins game level of noise.

Surely Smith goes out and not Bond. Bond has a future, Smith doesn't.

When will people learn that "having a future" is completely and utterly irrelevant when it comes to selection. Every club in the league selects for next week, and only next week. The only exception isn't when their season is shot to peices and they have a coach who has a job the following year.

That said, Bond will stay in because he's the Max replacement.

Cook? wtf are you talking about.

EDIT: Woops, my bad. I thought Bays was talking about Cook. Agreed. Peatling had a bad night but has a had a really good year. Apologies.
Glad you put that edit in. I was going to say something similar to Cromulant. Peatling had a good last 1/4 last night after a quiet earlier period.:thumbsu: A gun imho.

We rarely got smashed but usually we'd put in a meek token effort to close the margin without ever threatening to win. Usually it would be after the opposition takes the foot off because they'd already won

Last night we erased their margin in half a quarter! It was a dominant statement to the competition that we are always in games, so don't for a second think you've won
It was like the start of Q4 in the Brisbane game. They just went up a level and looked confident they could do it. They went from not being able to touch the ball to being untouchable. They are a scary sight when they get like that.

He's had a really good year but last night he had a howler. But as someone said above, he may have been playing sore given his attack at the contest 6 days ago.

Bring on Collingwood.

For a while Hawthorn games were just us turning up, and waiting to be rogered by the umps.

The Mackay one was a textbook tackle. Absolutely insane call. If you were presenting how to perfectly tackle someone safely and not fall into their back you'd show that tackle.

There's also the one in 2013 against Thommo virtually cost us the game too. We'd fought back to take the lead, Thommo v Hale in our forward line and he barely touched Hale in the arm to tell where he was (with his eyes on the footy), and took the mark. Razor Ray calls it a push in the back, then pays a 50 to double down, the Hawks walk it in for a goal and take the lead back. Momentum lost, 2 goal turn around, we lose by 11.

Oh, but we did get an apology for this one too. So all good.

Yes I’d forgotten that Thompson one.

Another ridiculous decision against them.

I recall us also getting screwed in a Don Pyke era game at Adelaide Oval where there were some very dubious calls that handed the ball to Hawthorn every time we entered our 50 when mounting a comeback

If he’s not at West Coast then there’s no other club rather him be at then where he is now. Hopefully he can win a flag and come home :p (later that is, not right now haha).
West Coast are the closest I go to having a second side. Sheed's goal was my favourite GF moment since 1998.

Howler is a bit tough. He didn't get his usual high possessions, a couple of ball-handling issues early, but I liked his tackling and second efforts. Have a look at the last 1/4.
