What position is he in your team of the century?

Irrelevant as the TotC had a few requirements

  • Needed to play a significant number of games
  • A premiership player;
  • Captain for coach.

The guy had a 46 disposal, 6 goal game against the Cats and then 45 disposals and 4 goals the next week against South.

Buckley
Sav Rocca

?

You’ve put a kid that’s had an ok career start above both of them?
Bucks wasted a large portion of his career playing dumb, selfish football

He wasn't any good until Malthouse went there and taught him about team play

Sav only had one good year at Collingwood, though T Shaw ruined him by benching him constantly, probably played better at North

Daics started at Collingwood and we instantly bounced from bottom 4 to top 4, we've never seen that from a rookie

Took us to a flag and broke the previous Brownlow record in just his 3rd year

And he's just getting started

This is hard. I like Oscar McDonald and also Oskar Baker and other than that I liked Rohan Bail, Stef Martin. Charlie Spargo has a cool name.

That’s 5 and they pretty much qualify as players.

From the 90s onwards (no particular order):

Gawn (7x AA, Premiership Captain, AFLCA MVP, 2x B&F)
Neitz (2x AA, 1x Coleman, 7x Leading Goalkicker, 1x B&F, All-Time Leading Goalkicker)
Stynes (2x AA, 1x Brownlow, 4x B&F, 1x AFLPA MVP)
Lyon (5x AA, 2x B&F, 2x Leading Goalkicker)
Petracca (4x AA, Norm Smith, 2x B&F)

There are some that might have arguably had better peaks (Jakovich, Schwarz, Farmer etc), but that'd probably be my top-five based off careers.

This thinking is why Essendon haven’t won a final for 20 years.
2x AA first 18 defender
( no bomber has achieved this feat this century)
Won a bnf (rare for defenders)
Will play 200+ games
He will never be in my top 5 but your dismissive attitude is unwarranted

If he finishes with a 3rd AA it's hard to argue he's not in the conversation.

Serong is almost there. Young & Reid might get there too.
Treacy tracking nicely also, feel like he will be a real handful if you play finals
Pav and Fyfe will never leave the top 5 in my lifetime.
I can see AB and Serong working their way in especially when we have success.
The 5 Beatle will always be up for debate.
It’s going to take a bit to dislodge two ultimate club man in Mundy and Sandilands
Your right about serong
One bnf away from Fyfe bell and Pav as 3+ bnf winners already equal most derby medals

Did Jarman do enough over his career though?

I thought he’d make a list

Most of this thread has been a sensible discussion. And then you get a poster nominating Nick Daicos. After 4 frickin seasons he’s recognised as a Collingwood great. C’mon…

To be fair, it could well be that the poster is 5years old. And based on his posting in the Daicos thread, more than likely the case.

Peter Daicos sure. He was special. In fact, I enjoyed watching him play more so than GAblett. That’s how high I rate him. But Nick after 4 seasons…really??

One club AFL only, not going down the Port Adelaide SANFL argument

Robbie Gray (out and out champion, brilliant, clutch, won finals and showdowns off his own boot, all that with the road crash level ACL and the cancer and still 270 games of mastery)
Warren Tredrea (forget the current sovereign citizen crap, a colossus key forward, superb long kick off non preferred as well. Premiership captain, shoulda had a Brownlow in 2004 when he kicked 6+ six times not one BOG One of the all time AFL -not VFL- best KPF)
Ollie Wines (a star from his very first game v Melbourne at the G, high level super consistent at the coal face for 12 seasons now, and just killed in the postCOVID 2021 year, possibly 300 games coming up next year)
Travis Boak (7th most games played in the comp history, led the club out of dark days early 2010’s with professionalism, commitment and and ability to will himself to the next contest to get the momentum back our way, 5 top ten Brownlow placings)
Chad Cornes (more of heart vs head pick, because he was the player that best epitomised the hunger and edge that we needed and still need in PA, loved the contest, hated the crows, played forward in the early dominant Port 2000’s, moved back and starred in the 04 flag, even thrown into the midfield in 07 and picked 25-30-35 possies most weeks through to a AA as well as GF I never watched)
——-
(Yes I left Kane out of pure bitterness for the selfish way he left, add him if you want purely for the smashing he gave Simon Black to help Port win the 2004 GF)

Incl 2 club players, Gavin Wanganeen definitely.
(4-club players, well Byron Pickett in a league of his own but doesn’t get in, a 200 game wrecking ball but geez I loved watching him play)

1x AA at the Crows. I know he was inducted into the hall of fame for the AFL and SA but I feel having played only 120 games for Adelaide (roughly 50% of his career total), not winning a B&F, and one AA puts him well down on the list compared to some Crows greats.

I think the one factor getting him up there is that 97 GF.

I am not saying he is not a great, but I’d not have him top 5 based on those numbers.

No love for Modra or Jarman? D Jarmen won finals off his boot and Modra, well say no more (with his accolades)
I think Ben Hart was seriously underrated. 300 games. 2x AA, 2x B&F, 2x premierships.

If we are talking the best defenders of the nineties then the obvious name is Silvagni and Jakovich, however Hart flies under the radar big time.

I’d have

McLeod
Hart
Goodwin
Ricciutto
Walker / Bickley
