Roast St Kilda in no mans land - Part 2

Fine pal.

Keep telling yourself St Kilda should be commended for treading water for 15 years.

Fmd.
In the last 5 years, you guys went from contending to bottom of the table. Turning over a old list to a younger list (just like Saints) the big difference is we didn't bottom out and aren't looking at a world of pain for the next 5 years. West Coast is only marginally younger than the Saints, so you want to sh!t all over us because I think we don't need to be mocked for remaining competitive while turning our list over then go for you. It's more telling of you that you use Saints to feel better about the state that West Coast is in.

I am 100% aware my club is in the shit - i haven't said otherwise.

I just don't agree St Kilda have done anything in the last 15 years that warrants commendation, as you suggested - plenty of folk would agree with me.

I get it, you guys are up and about after the big news with Nas (happy for you, search my posts if you want!) and a good run of form but come on now, you aren't getting a pat on the back for spending 15 years in No Man's Land.

You keep going back to 15 years ago, we have had four different coaches and the list had been turned over several times. I keep mentioning since 2020. The period where Ratten was coach, got us to an elimination final that we beat the Dogs in, then lost to Richmond (who won that year), then we now have Ross who has pointed out we needed a mini rebuild. I could make an argument that West Coast have been sh!t if I go all the way back to 1990 and use stats from there. You are purposely misinterpreting and twisting facts to suit your narrative. Only people who have a dislike for another thing do that. Only seeing the bad in something. I feel sorry for you. This is my last post to you as you are tedious.

By the way, not looking for a pat on the back, looking to close this stupid thread that targets a club trying to be better.

The next couple of years will be interesting for us. We've drafted heavily, now it looks like we'll be bringing in some players, the expectation will be finals in the next two years. We'll soon find out if the plan worked.

The emergence of Nas shows th stupidity of saying we need to go to bottom four to get good players. A pick 11.

A win today would be great for the end of year morale and finish them off in a place to build for next year. Just like they did last year.

They will have a couple of good ins, but for them hopefully they minimise the outs over the pre season.

wonder what it's like being belted by 80+ in a GF?

Not fun.

So, now that the acquisition of Tom De Koning is more or less confirmed; with NAS re-signing and let's presume Leek Aleer coming down to bolster the defense - can St Kilda MOVE THE DIAL as Ross is so fond of saying?

They improve their top end talent, but might lose stalwart Rowan Marshall and perhaps one or two others miffed that the lion's share of the cap is going into the pockets of two players.

Definitely worth taking a swing, class ruckmen don't grow on trees and De Koning is right in the AFL goldilocks zone in terms of experience for a talented tall.

But will it work? The divide between the haves and the have-nots never seemed wider in 2025, and the gulf looks tough to bridge.

That's the issue. Because top teams continue to draw the best talent, it's virtually impossible to bridge the gap.

Which of course is entirely contradictory to the AFL's Draft and salary cap model.

NWM - 2m
TDK 1.7m
JSOS 900k
Aleer - ?
Flanders - ?
Ryan - ?

With the Saintsflation rampant, how will the club contain it's cap?

Maybe NWM had told them two years, then I'm out.

Maybe Marshall is one the move, saving some money.

What a surprise that this thread was started by a Carlton supporter.

Indeed. We know better than any other supporters that the Saints are paying massive overs for JSOS and TDK, and others. Will be a very interesting watch. You've got a guy like Gubby who has already bent the rules and SOS who was a willing participant in salary cap breaches (he just got annoyed he didn't actually get paid).

Surely some good players will get squeezed out, or simply want to leave because of all this insane overpaying.

Marshall and Wilkie the obvious ones to look out for.

Maybe even Windhager, who they seem determined to make play for minimum chips, despite having a very good season.

Even more worrying is what will happen to the club (in the coming years) if this so-called bold plan doesn't work out and they aren't playing regular finals?

They may be trapped paying a huge percentage of their cap for guys who aren't getting the job done and unable to pay many other more deserving ones anything near their value.

The big dollar contracts don't seem to sting clubs these days. It's the long term ones where we see the issues.

If I was a Saints fan, I'd be super excited by the spending spree.

At this stage, the guys they're trading in are monstrous improvements on the guys whose spots they'll be taking.

The issue obviously is if this ends up squeezing good players out, and not the bottom 6. You end up spending lots of cash for a minor overall uplift of your list.

Replacing that young VFL ruckman with TDK = massive uplift and money well spent.

But replacing Marshall with TDK = minor uplift and overspending.

Replacing Caminiti with Silvagni = massive improvement and money well spent

But Replacing Wilkie with Silvagni = downgrade and wasted money

Saints fans just need to be confident that their List guys have a very clear idea of who they think is dispensable, and make sure that it's only them that they lose during this process.

I think they'll be banking on increases in the salary cap after the next bargaining round.

It's interesting though, because salary cap increases are going to be largely based on a new TV rights deal and things like money from sports gambling companies. There's no guarantee the TV rights deal will get bigger or that sports gambling will be part of the landscape going forward.

Good on the Saints I reckon. They've done a great job at improving the list this offseason and throwing the cash around seems the only way for the small clubs to do so. I like it.
