Based on past results the AFLPA MVP is fairly accurate in my opinion. Umpires voting is a bit silly, its my most hated part on umpiring on weekends, thats why finals are great...no votes!

Start with the Brownlow Medal. The award that's supposedly for the "best and fairest"... yet somehow some of the greatest players ever never won it. Leigh Matthews, Wayne Carey, Gary Ablett Sr, Jason Dunstall, Luke Hodge. You’re telling me that none of those blokes were ever the “best” player in a season? Pull the other one.

I listed Wayne Carey and Gary Ablett snr along with Leigh Matthews. They are recognised by nearly everyone as the 3 greatest players of the game.

The issue is, the umpires ignore the overall best. They only focus on the midfielders and assign their votes there. And even then, they only look at a couple of players per team.

Oh, players can star but if they are giving lip all game or starting fights umpires won't give them votes...trust me on that.

They probably go into their favourite betting app and just pick the player who's on the shortest odds for the Brownlow. Which would explain why midfielders exclusively have won it for the past 20+ years.

What I had in mind was a special cagtegory on it's on own for players who wouldn't be in the running. Midfielders always get the major awards unfortunately, and things like supercoach do not help either.

A midfielder can really compound their stats easily. Lets say a midfielder manages to win the ball from a tap from their ruckman, they run with the ball for a moment and hoof it forward into the forward line and it results in a behind being kicked.

That is 1 disposal (kick), 1 clearance, 1 inside 50, 1 score involvement, all this from one kick.

Compare that to a forward, who might get 1 mark and 1 goal for a stat, and they have far less opportunities in general to both get the ball and compound the stats once they have it.

The players MVP award is a joke as well. Most players aren't footy nuffies and don't have the time nor interest to follow other games during the weekend. I'd say even the average Bigfooty poster would be better informed than most footy players.

I have no idea how someone who joined the site twenty years ago could possibly believe this still.

Best and fairest isn't great either as all clubs have their own criteria for it and I have lost count of the amount of times the Swans Best and Fairst wasn't the best player for our season.

Yep. Rucks get more points than they should, forwards less than they should.

Even the Norm can be annoying because we have journos voting. Should only be ex or current finals coaches, there would be a heap of them at the game.

My suggestions for 2025 - put them together in a corporate box with fill the remaining 7 seats with 5 retired Snr premiership plAyer’s and 2 tech to pull up specifics replays for them during the breaks. Provide heaps of quality booze and let them get on it and argue and talk about the game. Then film it and what an awsome short doco it would be. Just my suggestion
