It's happening now, isn't it?
You said "there's always a reason" as if it was some repetitive behaviour. I think it's naive to think money has not played a big role in TDK departing. We are talking about the gap between offers of 600k+ per year - it's a significant difference.

What's naive is the posters saying the money is the only reason he left

I can't read his mind so can't speak to that but from reports TDK loved the club and was trying to get Carlton to get closer to the Saints offer. If he wanted to leave (money aside) not sure why he'd bother when he can go play for his preferred club for more money.

My main concern about the deal is once it seemed like he made his decision and Carlton weren't making finals he had mentally checked out. Not sure if that mentality is the type you want to have as the pillar of the club going forward. Money and contract length will sort itself out and in 3-4 years there will be a lot more players getting paid more than him so that isn't a concern

He’s always been flaky.

BOG one week, monstered by a bigger body yet C-grade ruckman the next.

Tbf now that he’s settled and will only get stronger from here I fully expect him to be a superstar for you.

He’s been pursued by Geelong since he was drafted by us. Hes never shown signs of being unhappy with the club, his teammates or the coach.

Only this year after the huge offers came in. Likely due to self preservation mode, which is fine but hard to watch as a fan.

As I have stated already in this thread, money played a factor but IMO he does not come to the Saints if he thinks we are a non competitive team and it will be 8 years of slog.

I think it’s a massive overpay and you’ll regret it

Marshall has years left and is a competent ruck … Spend money on ball players

Man

Does anybody realise how many goals we give away directly from the centre bounce. This is Essendon, Essendon, 6 goals from the centre bounce.

GWS did the same on the weekend.

We get poleaxed from the centre bounce every week.

We were pretty similar this year to be honest. Saints averaged 11.9 points/game against from centre bounce. Blues were 11.5 points/game.

The Saints offered him enough money to make all other considerations irrelevant. That’s why you bid up an additional $800k a year against no one.

We have banked cap. He's a lucky guy but if you look at our kids and who we'll potentially be bringing in, he can help us make a move up the ladder. Carlton meanwhile look to be going in the opposite direction.

$800k a year
And you know this to be a fact do you?
Carlton reportedly offered him $1.1 M per year, so you're saying its a 8 year deal at $1.9M per year. If you believe that, then there's a bridge over the Yarra River that I'd like to sell you.

Call it $600k a year more than everyone else if you want. The Saints weren’t bidding against other clubs long before that point, they were bidding up to the dollar amount that rendered any other considerations irrelevant.

That's true. That's exactly the point of the offer, it was unmatchable.
St Kilda have bought in a good player and aquired draft capital (whatever TDK is worth in a trade) for no draft outgoings using banked salary cap.
It seems like good business to me but everyone will have their own opinion.

Interesting cultural article in the paper. apparently off topic but potentially relevant
To be totally fair, I imagine all clubs would have 'cultural issues': players who don't get on with other players, cliques forming, resentment over others getting paid more or being played ahead of them, this player doesn't like the coach, board members or businesspeople sticking their nose in where it doesn't belong....

But in a successful club, this all gets papered over. Only when a team is underperforming (or perceived to be) that it suddenly becomes "A Thing".

Know the stats for Geelong? We've wheeled Stanley out for years to do the same. The key is you are not wasting excess cap space on a ruckman so you can spend it elsewhere.

Cats gave up the third least scores from centre bounce at 9.3 points per game. And I 100% agree on ruckman. The more I watch footy the less I value the ruck position.

Can't believe Tom De Koning will be a Saint. It's bloody fantastic. Watch him tear next season apart now he'll finally be playing under a decent coach. Imagine what him and Nas are going to do. Great time to be a Saints fan.
