2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

Two thoughts on Marshall.

1) Geelong makes so much sense for him, you can't really blame him. If his contract is minimal based on its payment structure - is he able to renegotiate that with Geelong? It would be pretty enticing for him if his salary suddenly went from $250k to $900k.

2) Ross has played this beautifully with his comments about Geelong. Imagine our ins with SDK instead of Aleer. I know SDK may be untouchable, but they'll have to give up serious collateral for Roma, 1 pick that will end up late 20s wont cut it.

"Like a teenager headed to the Melbourne Show with a fist full of pocket money and dreams of big showbags, St Kilda has its money and is spending it all."

If anything screams "OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUDS" about the HS this is it :tearsofjoy:
Thanks for the link 😀

Yes, he definately suits Geelong
But they dont give up much
Especially for a 30 y.o
For us he provides assistance or back-up for TDK & King.

What is the latest on Voss? Are we actually likely to draft him?
Hope so
Brett Voss was a pretty well respected player
Would be a good feel story to have his son play for us
Jackson knows how to find the footy & uses it well
He's quicker than Stocker too ;)
Not sure that he has other interest, so rookie should do.

Posted for the Cleary bit at the end. Confirming Marshall doesn’t have a huge contract remaining.

Which begs the question, what happens if he’s traded to Geelong? Does the front loading of said contract get paid back to us? Or does he keep it and get paid for his Geelong contract as well ?

I honestly don’t know

No, it’s been paid. So you cop it.

Just means it’s a valuable contract to us plus a valuable player.

So you can’t release cheaply

Your figures can’t be correct. Because they can’t factor in the fact that at minimum 10% of Atleast the last 3 years salary cap has been used to forward pay existing deals in 2026 and beyond.
It would seem unlikely that 10% of St Kilda's 2023 salary cap was used to bring forward 2026 salary, given the fact that so few players are even on 4, 5 year deals.

Which St Kilda players, by the end of 2022, were even signed until the end of 2026?

Was just thinking about all the players wanting out from the Blues and the Bombers, I believe for the good of the game their coaches should remain at the helm for at least the next ten years. 🤔

It's getting to the stage where you could field a bloody good team made up of players who've wanted to get away from these f#ckers in the last few years. 🥴

You bring forward the following year.

23 brings forward 24.
24 brings forward 25.
25 brings forward 26.

Which is why you writing down your newspaper sums of the salary cap and the impact of TDK/Jsos etc isn’t the dooms day prophecy you keep preaching around here.

Here are the reported facts.
  • our committed salaries as of this and last year was paid out using only 85% of our salary cap - Caroline Wilson
  • we have forward paid deals to bring it to 95% - Wilson Cleary Ralph Twomey etc
  • we have had Billings on the books for a few hundred K since 2023 trade. That finishes this year
  • we can spend 105% next year - reported to death
  • Marshall has only a small amount owing on his deal for 26&27. - Cleary.

There's a 4 year bring forward provision allowed in the CBA

But what you're suggesting is St Kilda has been paying less than 95% for at least the last 3 years, and topping up to 95% by bringing forward the following years salaries? Is that what you're saying?

Where did Caro say this?

Ok, that would give us an extra $3.5mil if true.

Ok, if this is all 100% true, then let me re-run the numbers.

It defies common sense, but let's assume it's true and run the numbers. I'll get back to you.

I’m saying for Atleast 2 years we have done it.

And she said it on agenda setters in the middle of all the NWM stuff.

What numbers are you re running? The media numbers? Without knowing the exact numbers, it’s such a pointless argument and massive waste of time for you.

Well if we can't have any trust whatsoever in anything from the media, might as well shut down this thread!

Pretty much everything here has origins in something a media commentator said somewhere.

Apologies if this is the wrong thread for it, but what do you guys reckon we should be doing with Hunter Clark? I don't think we can play him in the midfield, and while I enjoyed some of his work coming off Half-back at the back end of the year, I also really want to see Travaglia play there full-time so he can start adapting to the speed and physicality of full-length AFL games.
Half back is the only spot left for Clark. Still think there’s a place for him back there because we’ll need another good ball user if Nas will be spending more time in the middle and if it’s not him then I’ve got no idea who will take that role.

I do not rate Caminiti at all. We really need to target a full back if we can.
The man is neither a backman nor a forward; the only reason he is playing AFL is due to his height.
In fact, im not sure he is a footballer
Football, as the name states, requires the player to kick the ball. This man just does not have the ability.
First of all , thank you for joining the Saints Board as you have now become the most negative person on here taking the mantle off me ( according to a few _---- ) i wish you all the best .

That’s on you to believe everything you read. Just think about it logically for a second, if you believe every figure the media says , how the hell is the club fitting all these players in along with the rest of the list.

Look, I don't think he'll transfer into midfield and his set shot goalkicking is a problem, but there is no way Owens finds himself at Sandy other than in some sort of injury recovery. He's in the discussion for the most competitive guy in the league, has started to consistently win free kicks and has Norm Smith written all over him. Insanity.
Yeah. Too much focus on what he isn't good at. The list of good is way longer including his team mates walking with a stiffer backbone being alongside him.
