2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Wilkie in talks with the club on an extension. Manager being a pos and using Bulldogs offer as leverage.
As stated by everyone here, it just malice from the bulldogs who were never gonna get him but want to hurt our wallet. Ah well, i guess if you shake the trees you have to expect the rotten fruit with the good as well. If we're gonna be serious, we have to take this in stride and do the same to other clubs as well.

Target players who we won't get but strategically drive up their price to hurt opponents. It's a battle off the field as well. so **** it, lets go to war. The era of good faith negotiations doesnt exist anymore

I would hope that Andrew Lovett isn't being given a job.

You would hope the club is only giving ex-players jobs that are worthy for them. I've seen nothing to the contrary in recent times.

Brendon Goddard struggled as Sandy coach but that list was terrible. He deserves an opportunity with a half-decent list before judgement is made.
I wasn't bagging Goddard , just saying that someone from outside the club is most likely going to be the next coach , not an ex player

I never said it was 100k difference
Fair enough, my apologies.

I have been talking for some time, however, on how the differences between offers has to be bigger than the 300-400k you have suggested in your post. TDK is the latest example. Ablett Jnr and Scully were others.

On the other hand, players can move for other reasons. Josh Battle is playing finals, has an AA blazer and his wife is happy.

No offence mate but you think everyone should be paid what they are due.

Facts are that you want to build a list that gives Wilkie & Sincs a chance of a flag. Everyone is taking a haircut on what they can get on the open market.
The other thing forgotten is Wilkie signed a 4 year deal at $750k odd before he was worth that and was happy to take it along with the security of 4 years. I am not sure it’s fair to take that security then be restless when you surprise everyone, even yourself, and become a a top end player and ask for a revision.

Can the club ask Steele of McCrae for a revision of their wage to match performance. What about Ro and Henry this year?

Sorry but if I'm Wilke I'm taking it , he is 29 and has what 4 years left to earn some decent cash , i know he has something to fall back onto when footy is over but 4.5 Mill is life changing.

So your on say $100,000 in your current job and some bloke walks in and offers you $150,000 to do the same job , you're not going to seriously think about it ?
Not sure he has the luxury of it being his choice for two more seasons.

I think he gets an extension with a pay rise beginning from 2028.

It’s either a home ground, or it isn’t.

I get it for the Grand Final, but everything else should be fair game
You have a line somewhere, just like we all do.

If it was a true home ground Geelong would get every game there including the Grand Final.

My preference for GF would be either:

1. Rolling carnival like superbowl. 8 year schedule. 1,3,5,7 - MCG. 2- Adelaide. 4- Optus. 6- SCG or Stadium Aus. 8-Gabba.

Every other game wherever the home team prefers.

2. Best of 3 GF. At least 1 game at MCG regardless who plays. Game 1 or 2 depending whether a Victorian team finished higher on H&A ladder.

Also, every team should get 3 MCG games every year.

But we all know this is academic. There's an MCG deal until 2057.

I never said you did.

I used Goddard as the example I could think of...of a ex-player currently working at the club and struggling at their gig.

I would still give him another season.

Sure, the next coach probably will come from outside the club in Enright. Not sure why that's being discussed in relation to what we were talking about.

Twomey made me laugh on SEN this morning.

- Wilkie, Dogs are making him think. They shot their shot the moment they lost JSoS. Saints won’t want to lose him.

And then straight into Merrett

- No Essendon won’t lose him. None story.

😂 How are they any different?!?
Different because Twomey barracks for Bombers . Laughable

The number crunchers are going to be busy at the end of 2027 with a bunch of players out of contract and a new cba coming in.
100%.

Worth pointing out. That at the end of 2022 agreement. That average salary was 400k.

At the end of this season it’s 500k.

Soon players getting paid $1m a season - like King. Will be above average contracts.

You going to be okay PJays? :grimacing:

I could see your head exploding :tearsofjoy:
I just hope, for St Kilda's sake that one of two things happen

1. The AFL significantly increases their revenue somehow (unlikely given next TV rights isn't until 2032)

2. AFLPA successfully argues for a larger share of revenue going to players (more likely but not a given)

Those are what St Kilda needs with long-term contracts on the books with TDK, JSOS, King, Owens, Higgins, loads of young players coming into their primes in the next 2-3 years (Nas, Hall, Pou, Wilson, Windy etc) and others who might reasonably expect early extensions or increases (Wilkie).

If those things don't happen- yes, I'll be worried. As we all will be when the time comes.

Yeah , nearly as weird as your comment to bring up about how Goddard had a crap team to coach , lets move on
Happy Friday

All Good ,

Buddy comes to mind , not sure about blokes like Jarman and Burgoyne who would have been died in the wool South Aussies yet they left their mates to come to Vic , Not sure if it was a money thing but players can leave their so called best mates
