To gain SOS at 900k and loose Wilkie on much less is a mind bending way of building a list.
I can see a sort of logic if they're wanting to hit the draft or go after some other players. Bring in JSOS as a free agent, pay him what you'd probably be willing to pay Wilkie, Wilkie gets pissed and poached but because he's contracted you can get a first rounder back.
Basically flip one mature key defender for another and walk away with a first round pick to spend elsewhere.
They'll seemingly have a crack at doing the same with TDK/Marshall, unless they really think they can play both.
Now...that does of course leave aside any cultural considerations. I have no idea how well-liked Wilkie is, but I'm assuming given he's talked up as a potential Captaincy option for them, he's probably well-respected. Marshall seems a solid sort as well. Overpaying two new recruits, using that to push out some dependable senior players for picks...it could be transformative for them, or kickstart a mini rebuild or list rejuvenation. But it could also get a lot of players off-side and create some massive cultural rifts in a club that has some history in that space.

Is he a good player. Genuine question.
