If I’m Mackie, I’m not offering more than our Round 1 and R3. Tell Saints to take it or leave it. Not ideal but just back Rhys in for one more year until Conway or Edwards are ready for 2027.
If.... And if we don't get Marshall, we will have to get another ruckman to help out, as Stanley couldn't play that many games like he did this year...
Even if it was a Mature age State League Ruckman

I am assuming "BigDog2477" is a troll account
Hopefully

It just seemed such a random comment as the only group I've really heard it suggested that Ollie may be looking for a new home is from Geelong fans themselves who for some reason think we'll try to get some value from it

Maybe some random Geelong fan trying to drum up interest 😂

Agree. My honest take on trade proposals here:

1) Information Asymmetry - Folks here have nowhere near the information that the Poach Brothers (Wellsy/Mack) have. Please don't tell me you are ITK (trade stuff is closely held). What you're stating as ITK is the feelers they are putting out. If you are rehashing what's in the Media, say so.

2) More prone to Cognitive Biases - E.g Anchoring. Someone comes along and says 3 First rounds and everyone starts from around that mark.

3) Discounting our Leverage - Like Turbocat said. The first rule of negotiation is to be able to walk away. Wellsy is just more polite than Mack in doing so. Also, you have no idea how badly the other party wants to sell and how much the impending deadline disproportionately impacts them. The Poach Brothers do.

4) Overpricing Players - Just because you think Player X is "crucial" doesn't make it so. There is always other options. I bet a lot of you overpriced Bailey while the Poach Brothers stuck to their guns.

5) Tunnel vision - You've no idea who/what is in the pipeline over the next few years, Salary Cap machinations etc. The Poach Brothers have everything strategised. It is their job.
..

Please don't go all 1st Amendment on me. Of course, you are free to discuss at length on your opinions. They are just that. Opinions. Just as long as you don't lose your cool and get into flame wars over it.

Everything you said here is spot on

This was gripping television. They got amazingly lucky to have Brad Scott booked to appear on the show on the day the Merrett news dropped. It meant the reaction was really raw, and you could really tell how hurt B. Scott was by the development.

Scotts in for a rude shock, Lyon is right, no way he can be captain if he wants to leave.

Jeez not a lot of love in here for edwards

I imagine that's exactly what they will do, foxdog50 and I have the intel! Trust me!

Can picture Wells and Mackie sitting in their office when the phone rings with FLAMING DRAGON Stephen Silvagni on the other end of the line... Mack Attack answers and the below ensues!

Bloody oath we do.. We were talking to a bloke who sold us some fairy floss and a soda water who works at Launa Park was telling us

He has massively fallen out of favor… think most cats fans. Wouldn’t care if he wasn’t on our list next year. He wouldn’t get much more than a third rounder.

Not suited to the two way hard running of the game.

His eyes light up from wing when he sees a forward transition but he doesn’t do much else

I’m mildly annoyed that hawthorn is going hard at all these elite mids while we seem to be kicking our heels up going after B graders, and they seem to be willingly letting us take worpel off their hands without much of a fuss.
They're going after two contracted 30 year olds that's going to cost them four first round picks, if it even happens.

Good luck to them, but there are reasons we wouldn't be doing that.

Part of the reason we are the club we are is buying low, outside of the true best of the best in their prime with a long time left.

You just offer them our r1 (will be 17-18 and 20s after bids) and our r2 for marshall and their r3 or r4.
Allows them to trade the Geelong 2025 r2 or stkildas future 2nd for Ryan
Should be straightforward IF they are reasonable.
I would offer our current 1st year and this years 2nd round for Marshall and there 3rd rounder pick. As it would only swap about 6 picks

Also hard at butters and Reid

I think Edwards is our future ruckman. Iv got more belief in Edwards then i do Conway. But in honestly id say his about 2 years away from paying regular games as he needs to get size in his body. He may play 3 or so games next year. But we need a regular ruckman player to play now

Not sure there's a lack of love for Edwards - think those of us who watch the VFL love what he brings and want to see how he progresses as he develops, but understand that he still looks a summer or two in the gym away from looking built for regular senior football

Hopefully he gets an injury free run at things over summer and we can see how that helps in his development - it'll be great to see him get a senior debut next season, but not sure he'll necessarily be a regular feature at this stage

Give him time, especially with a good injury free run that allows him to build and we'll start to see him really integrate into our seniors

I know we've had a bit of discussion within this thread of where SDK may fit into our structure next season, with a thought that maybe we don't necessarily lose too much during those periods he's not in defence

Statistically this season he's been our most reliable tall defender when it comes to situations like 1-vs-1

And while there's no doubt that's an area he's struggled in over the past couple of seasons, he's actually performing better in those contests than he was in 22 when a lot of us got excited by what we thought we'd be seeing from him over the next decade

Looking at his numbers, it gives confidence for what we may just see from him as a KPD over the next decade if we settle him into a role in defence

Spot on. He can be exposed on the lead a bit when our defensive structure is all over the place or deficient - the GWS game at Geelong being the lead example - but in 1v1s, as a general defender and interceptor he has had a fine year for a still-young KPD. His kicks can be a bit loopy and he has the odd brain fade but overall when we have the likes of Stewart covering leading lanes, SDK is doing his job well.

He kicked 37 and 41 goals in the previous 2 seasons. You’re daft.

He’s had a hard time this year because our best mid from the past 8 years has moved into his role.

Just as it seems once again that this is popping up in this thread.

Think peeps in here need to understand

1. You can love guys like Conway and Edwards for the talent they could be and their potential

BUT

2. Also understand and i can't believe we have to say this for the what it feels like 50th time...THEY ARE NOT READY

We need a ruckman in 2026, ready to go! We are competing right now for Premierships while Danger, Jez, Blics, Stewy are still playing elite footy.

We can not afford to waste the Premiership window on waiting for Loch Ness to string VFL games together/not be wrapped in bubble wrap and for Edwards to put on bulk and be AFL level ready to play and string multiple AFL level games in a row without getting injured/hitting a wall.

Wells and Mackie have obviously identified Rowan Marshall as their target (have been interested in him since 2022, Rowan requested a trade to Geelong in 2024, 2025 is the time to really ramp it up as evidenced by Scotty meeting with Rowan )

We also know Wells and Mack will not sit on their hands waiting for a superstar to fall in their lap....they will go out and get a B grade guy like Worpel if they believe they can get the most out of him like a Moneyball option (His Elimination Final is evidence that when he's fit and healthy he was close to BOG)

Trust in the Cats, trust in Wells, Mack and Scotty. They know what they are doing.

We aren't spending $1 mill, a first round pick and a 3rd round pick on a ruckman.

We just aren't. There's non available that are worth that.

I wouldn't be surprised if we used our 2nd pick on a Ruck from Alice Springs (I just made up a town) to be honest.

This is interesting because I think there’s a good chance we may make that trade and I also think Marshall is worth that.

Gawn aside who’s been a better ruckmen the last 5 years? He’s 29 turning 30 and rucks don’t seem to get going until 26-27 these days. Ruck is really one of the few missing pieces we have IMO. Worth paying for.

Was gonna say, if we are serious about winning Premierships this is the type of moves you make.
No one in this 2025 AFL Draft where we are picking is going to get us a Premiership in 2026.

If guys want to help us get to that position (Rowan does) then it only benefits us to make it happen.
He's an elite around the ground ruck, winning taps are nowhere near as important as basically playing like an extra mid. That's what he does. That's very important in modern footy. We saw it with Blics in the Qualifying Final. His impact around the ball was immense.

I was at that game.

We "got exposed" because Hogan sagged back and refused to chase his man. Which meant if we turned it over in the midfield or F50 and the Giants could move it quickly, he was basically on his own or had only token defence (due to our backs being out of position).

I wouldn't blame SDK or our other defenders in that game - GWS got lucky due to Hogan's laziness.
