Opinion The player I thought Port should draft / would be the next big thing

Thought Cain Ackland would be a star.

Really wanted one of Luke Penny or Chris Lamb in the 98 draft.

I had big wraps on Luke Tapscott and was gutted we didn't draft him

After Mason Shaw kicked six goals in a SANFL game, thought he was close to debuting...never went on with it and in his final year, he got injured combined that with playing as a defender as well as acquiring Dixon effectively ended his AFL career.

I remember his mum posted on Facebook that she was gutted that Mason got told he would be delisted.

Bowen Lockwood. What a tragedy he had his back wrecked.

If we're talking drafting - Brodie Kemp. Thought he had all the weapons to be the next Fyfe/Danger/Bont.

Though to be fair I probably wanted the next 5 guys in line over Bergman (Weightman, Stephens, Kemp, Georgiades, De Koning), and probably most of the next 10. Thought Bergman was a fine pick but rated him around pick 30 - not 14 where we got him.

So happy Miles looks to be proving me very wrong about him. There's nothing better.

Bowen Lockwood was mine. Bulging disk injury killed it.

thought Riley Bonner after that 2021 prelim was gonna become a star half back

Adelaide have long had a knack of drafting players I was super keen on pre draft, mostly in that mid-late draft range. Graham Johncock, Paul Thomas, Ivan Maric, Darren Pfeiffer, Bryce Campbell, Jared Petrenko, Brodie Smith, Sam Kerridge, Riley Knight, Myles Poholke, Jordon Butts, Josh Worrell, Josh Rachele. Thankfully many didn't make it.

I remember being absolutely filthy that the expansion clubs had come in and we couldn't draft Jonathon Patton when we were crying out for a blue chip key forward in the post Tredrea era. Dodged a bullet there.

From players we did draft, as i'm sure you're all well aware i'll fight anyone about Butcher. He would have had a nice 200 game career if drafted to any other club.

Halfway through 2000, we lost to St Kilda by 10 goals in Melbourne, leaving the ladder like this.

I was thinking we were destined for the #1 pick.
A young man named Nick Riewoldt.

Thankfully, Choco was too proud, we won 6 more games that year, 2001-2004 was the outcome.
The draft didn’t turn out too bad either, the 4 players we signed totalled almost 1000 AFL games, and one of the four was Allan Murray! (Shaun Burgoyne, Kane Cornes, Dom Cassisi the others).

But imagine we had a Riewoldt alongside Tredrea?

And had done the obvious one of getting Bucky's young cousin. Jesus if we'd had Tredrea, Reiwoldt and Pavlich, we'd be talking about the 2000's as the decade we won 4 or 5 flags.

Always thought Chris Hall deserved a bit more opportunity. Also thought Ryan Willits was gonna be a pretty decent AFL KPP

The top-three direct ‘went a different way on the day’ draft choices:

• Matthew Pavlich (Adam Morgan),
• Lenny Hayes (Michael Stevens),
• Rory Sloane (Mitch Banner).

Getting Cochrane Jnr would be quite the plot twist, almost 30 years later.

Contrast his SANFL form for South back in the day to the revolving door of blokes we pick and give runs of games to now.

I thought Mitchell Banner would be great for us even though we got him late.
I thought Jackson Trengrove would dominate down back for us. Very good player though.
I thought Hamish Hartlett would be much better than his 4th overall pick.
I thought Tom Clurey would be much better than he was.
I hope Josh Sinn gets a wriggle on.

In 2006 before we came in I remember saying these two would be superstars- Tom Carr and Warren Tredrea. I guess one out of two ain't bad
