Academy Rorts - The 2025 Draft Thread

Fergus McFadyen gets a mention in yesterdays Fox Footy draft article, as a mature age prospect gaining attention for the draft. They failed to mention that we still hold academy rights to him.
Article in the Herald Sun about him today too. Says he'd probably be knocking on the door of selection this week if he was on our list, being noticed by recruiters, good chance for the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell medal, and looking likely to be picked up at the draft.

Having been involved in a private phantom draft recently, man this draft is incredibly weak beyond pick 30'ish. The first round is very shallow, as most of depth in the 15 to 30 range are academy or nga tied.
Would he have to be passed over in the national draft for us to secure him via the academy?

The AFL media are very much a copy cat industry.

No.

Well it depends if our recruiters want to use a National Draft pick on him with a guaranteed 2 year contract, or see him as a rookie list prospect.

Annable likely uses up all our points in the draft. However he only effectively uses up one draft pick, with the others sliding to the back of the draft. From pick 37 and back, it doesn't cost a point to match a bid, just need a live draft pick, which we'll have.

So it becomes a case of, do our recruiters rate Fergus where ever a bid might come, or do they believe there's the potential to find a better draft prospect where ever our picks end up at the back of the draft.

We can always get into deficit. Plus, with the rumours of a few players potentially leaving, we will probably improve our draft capital if any of those rumours come to light.

How bloody good are we going to be in 2026. :D :trophy:

Ins- Oscar Allen, Sam Draper, Jordan Ridley, Daniel Annable, Fergus McFadyen and Raphael Geesu.

I really hope we're keeping tabs on the academy players who missed out last year like Charlie Hewitt (if any good) or give the opportunity to our VFL player like McFadyen.

I know I’m going to regret asking this but what is a private phantom draft.

Sounds boring. Why don't we do a Marvel/DC superhero Phantom draft instead?

Will be interesting to see how many draftees we take this year. Need enough draft picks to get Annable while having enough list spots for picks and Allen, Draper, and maybe Ridley or Budarick in, + moving Brain to the senior list and decisions on 10 OOC players.

Is Prindable looking a good prospect?
I like Prinable from what I’ve seen in the vfl via the Telie. Around 182 I guess. Inside and out side game. Class mover. Been as good or better than any of the academy top ups after Annable. Someone posted maybe late second/early third round.

Problem is I don’t see us have the draft capital to match if that is his range or having the list spots even if he slipped to the rookie draft. Does he project as having a higher ceiling than Murray or Owen next year? Do we need need another solid midfielder, given other list needs?

A lot of tough questions for the list managers.

I liked the little I have seen of Prindable as well, although I think we need to prioritise other areas of the ground the next few drafts, we are stacked for mids now and have Annable, Murray and Owen coming.

Which is why I would go for McFadyen(3rd tall fwd) and Geesu(small fwd) in this draft.

Someone ran an invite only Phantom draft.

Annable was bid on at pick 10, leaving us with a pick in the 40’s, where I grabbed Cody Curtain, then picked up McFadyen and Geesu.

Did we win the draft?

Our best academy selections have actually come from our later picks. Kiddy, Payne, and Andrews were all picks from quite late in the draft, so I wouldn't discount these academy guys who will slide a bit. Sometimes it takes a little while for these guys to mature, and their draft ranking doesn't necessarily define what kind of player they will become. I remember when we drafted kiddy, Blake Coleman was seen as a far better prospect than him, and look what happened there.

I’d be surprised if Prindable went in the National Draft.

Really impressed with McFadyen this season in the VFL, remains to be seen if he can transfer that to AFL level, has he got a realistic chance of nabbing a spot in our forward mix in 2026? I think he has.

Not considering Hipwood as he could be out most of the year with his ACL.. Ah Chee and Sam Day probably gone as well.

Kai Lohmann, Logan Morris, Zac Bailey.
Fergus McFadyen, Oscar Allen, Cam Rayner.

Linc McCarthy, Charlie Cameron, Ty Gallop, Will McLachlan.

Who was better in the VFL this season Fergus or Ty? I'd give the edge slightly to Fergus.

I'd say him and Ty were playing different roles. Reckon McFadyen would be competing with Morris/Allen unless he can build his tank to play further up the ground, a la Adelaide's Tom Lynch.
