Autopsy 2025 Preliminary Final: Hawks get rolled

Settle down mate. He has to learn to play a team game or he is destined to underachieve. He and some of OUR team need to stop looking for individual recognition and play the team game. Pies and Cats lead the way in that regard. Putting him in the guts was laughable.
thanks for your input boss. see you next week

Some was ordinary but I actually think we need to get better in some areas. They are elite at grappling without giving frees away. Always got an arm but not enough for a free to get paid. Newcombe was held at contest allllll night. Around the hip and grab an arm at the same time on the side the umpires not facing, leg between Newc direct running path. Etc.

They showed us the rules, time to start playing a bit more like that and trying to get away with it because it’s the diff between losing centre bounce by 15 and maybe only 6

- Oh and maybe flail around a bit more Jai, show you’re getting held, fall over on accident every now and then
It sounds like sour grapes but there is a lot of truth this.

You have to challenge the umpiring to blow against you. On balance, they don't or won’t

The Dangerfield treatment is borderline ass kissing

Sadly you aint going to win many games with those numbers. I guess on the plus side, there is no ambiguity about what needs to be addressed in the trade and draft period.

If you think about losing centre clearances 20 to 5, that's not only 15 additional attempts the Cats get to score with the 6 - 6 - 6 setup but that's an additional 15 times we have to spend energy to move the ball the length of the ground into our forward 50.

I wondered why we didn't just go man on man in the middle and just force some stoppages, it was obvious that we were outgunned trying to play the cats midfielders out of the middle.

Oh I’m very aware that’s how it probably comes across as I’m typing it, and also aware it’s probably giving life to some Geelong fans scrolling our board as they drink their morning coffee. They were far too good for us last night in most areas and this is an area they have us well covered in.

Still can't get over the centre clearance differential. Crazy.

Thought Nash and Moore did well. Stats flatter Meek imo. Sharked us like crazy.
Meeksy should have gone the old fashioned thump it forward 20m out of the ruck.

The only time we looked like getting a centre clearance was when Chol jumped and got the ball out of the ruck and kicked it forward himself.

This is a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde team. The gap between good (Adelaide) and bad (Geelong) is vast. I know there are many things to unpack from the game and many pointers in what happened like Geelong's experience and having a week off against 2 tough away games but over the past 2 years this team has consistently shown time and again that when teams come at them hard they capitulate. Why was nobody prepared to take Dangerfield on? Then there is the fumbling, mis-kicks, poor decision making, missed tackles, the lack of intent and attack on the ball (happened quite a bit in the middle). Pound for pound Geelong is not a better team and they lost Stewart early and Holmes was obviously not 100%. Mitchell needs to work it out.

Add surfing/skateboarding to the training regime. Just a random thought. A few Puttys that are/were a handful all surf. Gazza, Duckwwod, Danger. Derm used to be in to it to. Only 15min from Dingley to Frankston.

We need learn to make our opponents more accountable. Or at least be able to switch between Blitzkrieg attacking football back to man on man tight defensive football. I dont think youre ever going to be a contender until you have the capacity to shift gears like that
Agree, when we are playing well, it's a great thing that we trust our own in a 1:1 and keep going forward to give options for the next play. But if we don't actually win that 1:1, it goes back so fast our defenders, whilst awesome, can't stop that much with no support.

That's not relevant to what I was pointing out. Despite our midfield inadequacy, we typically ran close to good teams all year. An ugly win was possible last night, but was never on the table courtesy of those incompetent muppets in green..

Also, that's media rubbish about needing 100 a grade mids in addition to Day. We need one or two, the second being a contingency for the not unlikely scenario that Day doesn't return to consistent match play.
I wasn’t responding to your post, this forum too difficult to start new comment.

But no, media hype not fake. If you think hawthorn can win a premiership with current midfield setup, I’m sorry, we can’t.

The first quarter we threw our best shot the defence stacked up the forwards looked lively, well done M.Lewis.

The midfield 20-5 down in clearance good luck in a preliminary. Its no secret to any of us without Daisy, couldn't find a way to get Frenchie back in ( Surprised he didn't play in Adelaide for this week)

Newcombe had attention, Nash was a soilder, and Moore played a cameo. Wardy didn't fire a shot in the second half 0 touches, Worpel back to his usual 56% disposal efficiency no impact.

A few of our younger core were down on output to be expected when you go on the road in finals. The differance between top 4/8. They targeted Weddle and Watson.

Big pre-seasons -
Dear, Lewis,Day,Frenchie,Whiz,Ginny, Weddle,Wardy,Mass they will only get better for the experience. I see so much upside we just need to nail the off season and finish top 4 for a full premiership tilt!

Should we go after Jaidyn Stephenson?

We could with Day, he is that impactful. The idea we need Day, Nuke, Merrett, and Trac on the field to win is rubbish.

Lesson everywhere - for players, coach and club. The question is how much is learnt.

Hopefully Sam learnt plenty. Scott did him over. No shame in that. Scott is currently the best coach in the game. He came in with clear plan to neutralise our advantages - clamped Newk, planned to concede the tap to Meek and made that ineffectual, hard tagged Weddle and stifled that run and then just went to town at the stoppages with Dangerfield and their bigger bodies; absorbed our best hits in the first half and then torched us with their superior run as the game wore on.

I feel the only real match up win we had was Gunston who looked dangerous all night. But otherwise Scott planned for everything and executed it. Mitch had no answers

Yeah I'm going to be that guy. I don't care, I'm just past pretending to be that supporter who is impartial and level headed.

We weren't good enough and our midfield got badly exposed.

But for f**k sake:
  • I told my mates before the game that the umps would cuck us and lo and behold - every god damn call went the maggot's way.
  • Tackling from our players went with ZERO f**king reward. Danger either somehow got a free kick out of it or he was just allowed to drop the ball for another Geelong maggot to pick up and drop it until they eventually can kick it forward. Its a disgrace. An absolute f**king disgrace.
  • But THEN, when OUR players drop the footy - then the w**ker umpires decide to call holding the ball.
  • Legal marks that were taken inside 50 were called as free kicks against us.
  • Our players were taken high - NOTHING.
  • Danger loses the ball illegally and its either not called, counted as a legal disposal OR the most frequent outcome - the umpires manufacture a free kick for him. Yeah no sh*t anybody could look like a world beater if they are protected to kingdom come like that on the footy field.
  • Ward (who was poor) was held ALL game as was Battle to stop him from defending Cameron - NOTHING. How are we supposed to win clearances or defend with only one god damn arm??
F**k the Cats, honestly f**k em. No idea how you can live with yourself supporting a team like that where they get away with everything ON and OFF the field.
I'd say this is extremely impartial and level headed

The one thing we need to work on a lot is to take more of an advantage when we have the momentum. Not just this game, but during the season, there have been plenty of times we have dominated, but haven't impacted the scoreboard enough. Last night, we should have been 5-6 goals in front at quarter time. Instead, we're 13 points. This has happened often, especially against the best sides.

Still feeling numb today. Love the club. Optimistic about the future for sure - just had to be Geelong didn’t it? Still rolling around the Norwood Parade in my hawks jacket today with pride though. Onwards and upwards

The pain of losing last night will burn over the summer for the boys, but they will take a lot of heart out of the fact that they never gave up and on multiple occasions rallied.

Geelong took every half chance they got and turned it into a goal scoring opportunity. Huge effort the past two years to get to where we are and we know Sam and the staff will not die wondering.
