Telling Voss he wants a trade
I think something is in play between the clubs.
We'll see in a couple of weeks
The more you make it Geelong option look like a live option the more money you get from Sydney or the suns

Problem with that he is saying he will take a pay cut to be here, those clubs would be feeling abit stupid to be overpaying for a player that’s willing to take a pay cut to be somewhere else

Stengle mentioned on SEN as a player who could leave to help get Curnow.

Don't shoot the messenger.

It's so weird that people haven't worked out yet that Geelong (and probably most clubs) aren't going to trade not just starting 22, but top 10-12 players in the team.

As good as our other smalls are, Stengle is probably our best from a pure SF perspective.

We won't even entertain that option for a second.

But the media etc. will continue to be dumber than doornails.

There will always be the inevitable "what if" scenarios floating around with potential trades this time of year. Particularly the talking heads in the media.

What most people overlook with Geelong though is that it goes against the grain of our list management to trade contracted players and Chris Scott has said many times that it's against their list management philosophy. Now that doesn't allow for a contracted player stepping forward and requesting a trade, but as we know that's rare for GFC.

So where that leaves us (I think) is that if deals are going to be done for players like Curnow / Butters / Marshall, I think it will be a massive departure from our list management mantra for any of those deals to involve contracted players.

I don't hate that idea at all.

Shannon has shown a hell of a lot as a forward this year, but he definitely has the size to be a ruckman and the mobility to get around the ground really well. I could see him being a dominant mobile ruck/forward within a year or two, similar to a Luke Jackson.

If the impossible did happen and we managed to find a deal for Curnow, I could imagine a world where we play Neale primarily as a ruckman and Jezza and Curnow as key forwards, with Shannon pushing forward as the game requires and to take the oppo ruckman out of his comfort zone.

Blitz as second ruck, and otherwise maybe playing mostly behind the ball and taking ruck contests in defence to allow Shannon to play further up the ground. Stanley keeping fit in the VFL ready to come in if there is an injury.

That could be a pretty flexible and powerful set up IMO.
Neale is possibly the best set shot kick at goal in the competition. Why would you take him away from that?

Do the people with way more knowledge of this stuff in here think it's possible we could give up future picks to get it done? Don't Carlton have F/S selections coming through that they will now need more 1st/2nd round picks for given the changes happening with matching bids?

Yep. Not going to happen.

And if we were willing to trade Stengle it would be one of the most obvious "buyer beware" moments imaginable. His value would immediately disintegrate.

I understand there may be a bit to play out for one of our players who has remained mostly unnamed this season, but I wonder if, should he have his off-field issues favourably resolved, whether he may voluntarily wish for a fresh start elsewhere which could suddenly widen the door on trade-in options without compromise to club trading ethos

Next court case isn’t until after trade period so seems nigh on impossible a club would offer a fresh start with those issues lurking in the background.

To trade in or trade out...

They seemed very interested last year in Oliver. It also gets difficult if players sign super long term deals. To some degree they have made a rod for their own back. If Carlton can not be satisfied I cant see any reason that would allow them to trade Curnow. Geelong held Kelly and he had cause.

I cant see the logical trade collateral that Geelong would just let go. Maybe we have just become accustom to never losing a player or two to gain one

What if this is just some s**t-stirring by Brisbane-aligned interests to impact Stengle's and our team's prep for the GF?

No chance hes just bumping his price up with other clubs. We literally dont have the currency.

This Curnow stuff suggests we really want him and are willing to give up an amount which at least might get it done. A couple of first rounders at least.

I was only semi joking when I said we'd get some great melts if we recruit Curnow and Shannon Neale starts the year as our number 1 ruck. Chris Scott is clearly in love with rucks who are great runners and Neale is a great runner.

The problem is they dont want middle picks they want players or high picks and any picks we could give would be absorbed by Dean and walker.
Gc could maybe get it done with 6 (a pick likely before a Dean bid) and flanders/whatever they get for him but we wont be getting it done.

No trading out contracted players is what I meant. Just goes against the grain and I know Chris Scott holds a view that it's not how you build and maintain the right culture of stability, or make the club a destination.

I recall Ross Lyon referencing Geelong and Scott recently when asked about his philosophy of trading contracted players.

High profile, high cost players moving takes 12-24 months of effort/working in advance… see Dangerfield, Cameron, Smith.
High profile, high cost players (often past their best) coming and knocking on Geelong’s door a few months/weeks before trade period… see Deledio, Oliver, Curnow… don’t get done.
It's a good point. We generally don't wind up with the last-minute hail mary style plays at trade time. We do get our player when it's clear who that is even well before trade period starts and our whole objective through the period is landing them.

The difference being GFrost35: that the Cats were dead keen on getting Curnow before he signed his last contract with the Blues and evidently Curnow was very close to coming to the Cats, hence his management by all reports approaching the Cats around 3 to 4 months ago to see if there was anyway he could become a Cat player. Although unlikely, there's still a bit to play-out and if he does nominate Geelong FC after Grand Final weekend then that will pretty much shut the door on the Suns and Swans, it then will come down to whether we can negotiate with the Carlton on him being a Cat or if not, then he stays a Blue.

Personally, I love to get him as long as his knees are OK coz at his best he's the best player in the comp and even if he never gets back to that elite standard, as long as his knees are OK then he'll still be a fantastic get.
