Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

Marshall not only gives us an upgrade but his rucking can significantly help with the development of certain players. It's painstaking watching us concede most ruck duels.

God forbid if Brisbane stumbled across an A grade ruckman with the midfield they currently have.

I mean they think Draper will be that but hes a potato. Marshall would help us at a decent price.

Ok I'm not sure Marshall is your guy then but if he wants to go there then fair enough.

He definitely wants to come and i expect we do it. We just need some mids that can kick better (like miers but I'm not sure he has the size for midfield full time) as much as a ruck though.

They dont seem that super keen to keep heath though?
Heath has a 3 year contract in front of him at Melbourne. I would expect us to offer him a year at minimum chips but I don't think Ross rates him all that highly. Based on where he started the year, he has improved out of sight, but will get better security and cash elsewhere.

Boyd was a pretty sizeable recruiting error, not that he cost anything. Top bloke, not an AFL footballer unfortunately.

As for Marshall, it goes all the way back to Lyon's comments about really respecting Geelong and Tim Kelly and Chris Scott and blah blah blah. That was a clear message of, you want him, you pay up. The major deficiencies in today's game was obvious to everyone, you need a capable ruck desperately.

I still don't know how it gets done. Obvious choice from Geelong's list is/was SDK, but with Aleer and also JSOS coming - where do they fit?

SOS is ruthless and I could see him telling Aleer thanks but no thanks - we got a better offer. Would be ruthless, but stranger things have happened.

I don't think we will just roll over and give up Ro that easily, our 'mantra' for want of a better word is that we will no longer get pushed around like a little club is. For that reason alone I expect us to dig our heels in

I would disagree with this.

St Kilda was well into chasing Soldo as the back up ruck when the deal fell over after Soldo's Medical.

That meant that St Kilda very late in the piece, as it still wanted a back up ruck, had to find a suitable back up ruck. It was a very lean market for such rucks and all had issues.

Boyd was taken as a back up ruck. Yes, it might have been great to gain a ruck that could become more than that. But Old Mother AFLHubbard's Ruck Cupboard was bare. So it is what is was - A one year back up role. He was never taken with the view that he would become a regular ruck. But he did have the chance to maybe doo more once he was in full time training. Maybe someone else may have been better, but again it was a lean market.

Over the year the young ruck draftee from the 2024 Draft in Dodson developed along quite nicely and by seasons' end was exciting all that watch him. He is still young and raw, but he looks to be the best kid ruck draftee taken at the Saints since say MacEvoy or Everitt.

The hope would be Dodson, based on how well be performed when rucking solo in the VFL, would surpass Heath within the next 12 months in terms of strength and fitness. Heath is a solid long term backup where Dodson has potential to be the main guy.

We wouldn't offer Heath the deal Melbourne is willing to offer him to go be the main back-up.

Personally I feel we should move away from this now.

I'd prefer a "Gap Year" or mini-rebuild where we focus on bringing in more youth and seeing what our VFL/fringe guys have, than topping up again with a 30 year old.

We're constantly contending with a bunch of late picks, rookies, and rejects....but the gap in pure unadulterated talent that you get from multiple top young draft picks was very evident yesterday.

😂 calling Marshall a “top up” whilst simultaneously whinging about talent beating you.

If you haven’t seen much of Marshall, say so.

As long as he gets a pre season. He is back to being a top ruck. What he lacks in ruck craft. He makes up plenty as a follower.

Why do you care? You (supposedly) desperately want to keep him.

If we prefer going a younger route and not trading for him, then bully for us. Nothing you should get so upset over.

This is not the year to be grabbing youth unless it's via trade. Our VFL fringe guys are not the answer.

I'd say Marshall is better for our list development than any kids we draft this year. He can protect the Jhye Clark's etc.

If we don't get him it's not the end of the world though

Because I don’t have my head in the sand. Marshall evidently wants to join you guys and as long as you pay what we want. He will be a cat.

He has been instrumental in each of our wins against you the last few years. You have seen it first hand

What you want and what you get aren’t going to be the same.
It’s always the case when you lose a player whether they are contracted or not.
I imagine Flanders deal is priority so they’d want to get Marshall done early so they can move onto that.

Clubs would already have this sorted out by now. Trade request will be announced soon.

He is CONTRACTED.

What we want. Is exactly what we will get if this deal happens. Losing the grand final in the manner you did has taken away any take it or leave it leverage you had.

I don't think that's true simply because you wouldn't be taking that pick to the draft but using it to get other players.
We'll be using our first this year for Flanders (if he nominates us), likely a future second or third for Ryan and Aleer wont cost more than our third this year, with talks that he may even be walked to the PSD. TDK and JSOS won't cost picks. We don't need Marshall's pick to help us with the other trades.

How is not getting an instant improvement in your weakest area of the ground a win for Geelong?
If the Saints demand major overs - as many of their supporters here seem to want with all the "WE hold all the power so pay up!!" stuff - then it is a 'win' if we walk away.

I'm sure we have a few options in play in case St Kilda were reluctant to trade and wanted to keep Marshall, so i guess we just move on instead of paying what we consider too much.

Im not sure your team is going to trade him but we will see.

Well I can’t imagine we are going to trade him for your current pick 17.

It’s going to need to be improved. I think a top 12 pick as that will beat essendons DVI offering with their 2 second round picks and we can flip it to GC for Flanders
