This thread is becoming increasingly popular, and to keep some sort of order, we will have some….

Rules of engagement:

1. Bring valid news or links to Twitter posts from notable sources. Don’t post screenshots or “some bloke just said on SEN” or what some “trade whisperer” has posted on a Facebook page.

2. Ignore what other team boards are putting up as trade offers. Don’t quote or bring them here either.

3. Don’t post “buckle up” for the lols.

4. If you can’t say anything nice about Worpel or CJ, don’t say anything at all. The continued slaps and backhanders are just going to be deleted.

Absolute ****ing disgrace you have zero transparency of the outcome before you decide.
You should match because you want to keep the player not because you are unhappy about a pick. The current system is by no means perfect but that's just another avenue for corruption.

Difference between band 3 and 4 is minimal. The club would have been all over this. They won't act out of spite or pettiness. We're a professional organisation.

Cheers for everything Worps, not many people have a Crimmins medal.

This is what annoys me. When Daniher left Essendon, they said give us Band 1 compo or we will match. Then they knew in advance what the compo would be. We get shafted every time.

Different rules for different clubs. Disgraceful.

Would a player of his age and ability be worth the salary offered, and pick 45-50? If so, match.
Also, not sure how it's petty to stop a hated rival getting a(nother) free kick when you get the chance.

reminder everyone that Hawthorn exploit free agency!

We've done reasonably well with free agent acquisitions. Picked up Frawley, Battle and Amon. Missed on Vickery. Simpkin and Henderson technically count as delisted free agents, albeit it's not the same.

We just never seem to get value out of departing players.
  • Franklin, best forward in the comp in his prime, netted us Pick 19. If there was ever a case for special consideration, it was then.
  • Gunston, Birchall and Murphy got us nothing.
  • Young got us Pick 64.
  • Suckling got us Pick 38.
  • Smith got us Pick 41.
  • Worpel is about to get us Pick ~40.
Meanwhile Perryman gets Band 1 and players across the period like Silvagni/Motlop/Cumming/Doedee/Gresham net Band 2.

I'd like us to benefit from an overpay once.

I can see what saints are doing - pay overs to get players in to supplement strong young core, punting on showing growth next year or two and becoming a true destination club that doesnt need to splash the massive coin.

But.

  • never overpay in draft or $$ terms for a ruckman. A good solid toiler who competes hard is all you need. Max Gawn is the only A grade premiership ruckman since Dean Cox in 2006!
  • silvagni appears from a distance to be a good clubman and honest footballer - but what is his role? I dont think he fits modern defensive profile (too slow to be a small, not an interceptor, not super by foot.

The downside risk is a mediocre 2 years, losing NAS in 2 years time & getting stuck with average players on big coin when your their youth is demanding a pay day.
They also know, no matter how sh|t they get, the AFL will bail them out and they get special assistance.

Moral hazard is alive and well

It just leaves a bad taste in your mouth to think that a player of Worpel's level who is a starting mid in our squad goes to a premiership rival and we basically get no comp for it. Had he gone to a lesser team like stkilda on a proper contract we could have been compensated with some thing that could help us replace him. Why even have the categories of restricted FA and unrestricted FA when is a stigma to matching. Very flawed system.

There is only two possibilities with this Worpel compo.
Either
1. The AFL is just corrupt and they will look after their mates and shaft the teams they do not like.
OR
2. Worpel is being "paid" in other ways and Geelong is just "forgetting" to hand in the paperwork. So the official contract is a whole lot less than the reality. Of course the AFL could never admit that.

Anyway, we cannot blame Worps. Grateful for his time. May he have a great life... outside of football.

Or both those options are wrong and compensation is based on contract.

This is the end of the 2nd round #39. Will probably drift to 45 by the time all the FS and academy picks go through. What would Worpel be worth on the open market? Probably a top 10 pick i would guess. This is another reason we should be looking seriously at trading Lewis for a mid first rounder this season rather than losing him for pick 65 compensation next season as a FA.

If Worpel is worth a top 10 pick, Merrett is worth 3.

Match on Worpel for a future 2nd rounder. Would be a fun death ride thread.
All these options seem at last as good as getting pick #45 to me...

1. He comes back to the club on what is obviously a modest 4yr contract.
2. Geelong trade pick #17 for him (or Mannagh if they want, up to them :)).
3. He walks to PSD for nothing and risks getting shipped off to West Coast.

If Worpel is worth a top 10 pick, Merrett is worth 3.
Well what do you think #8 #28 plus F1 F2 and players like McKenzie and Lewis add up to?

Our first and 2nd this year alone is worth the equivalent of pick 5. Add #15 and #33 next season and youre over the points Value of pick #1 (that doesnt even account for players being touted like Lewis and McKenzie)
