2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

The list is starting to shape up really nicely. But we’ve seen the ending to this movie before. Must get right club culture and development.
Think club culture is looking the best it’s been in years.
Development and fitness/ injury management, absolutely key.

Ro has nominated a club.

Prepare to be disappointed with whatever deal we get for him.

That's footy.
We will see. I was adamant wd would have to be totally unfair to trade Wilkie, not so adamant with either Roh ( wouldn't mind a fair trade) and Steele ( don't expect much).

Geelong either pay up or **** off.
It’ll get done though because the terms would already have been agreed to. Probably needed one of their boys to agree to coming to the Saints.

now that rowan wants out we have to keep Steele. At what point does it ruin the fabric of the club, when you replace loved stalwarts who have given all for there club, for people from other clubs on bigger money but similar output? Like why bring in macrae? He's hardly an upgrade on Steele at this point of his career. I really hope the club knows what it's doing..
Completely agree,

I bring this up this up every so often. I remember a few years ago before Richmond started their run, prior to the season he predicted Richmond would win and WB would win as well.

The idea was based around the right mix of drafted players and natural kind improvement and development. The key is that there must be a foundation of identity and culture that is set before you bring in too many other players, otherwise you risk the new guys coming in from different clubs and mixing the culture or identity and it can clash and become a problem. I remember bringing this up when we brought in Crouch, Snags, Howard, Hill etc.

The issue is now we seem to be trading guys out but also bringing in people in.

I understand Steele was a trade in but Marshall was a real born and Bred and Saint. Now you may argue that the identity and culture was bad during that period. Reardless, bringing in Blues Guys, WC, etc can disupt this, if our identity and culture is not atrong enough. I suppose the difference now is the emergance of Windy, Owens Naz etc.

Picks man.

Either a pick good enough for Ned

Or next years first and this years second type of deal.

Rowan asked for a trade during his exit interview.

Ross actually shut him down multiple times. Told him he can explore Geelong but we will see you day 1 of pre season. To atleast give next year a crack.

So it’s been made clear he IS wanted - spitting the dummy out because it’s not the role he wanted is disappointing.

Whereas Steele admits he will look because of the situation but wants to stay.
If the above is true (and I'm not doubting you) it will be interesting to see what position the club takes. I'd like to see Ro stay, and the only way I'd consider letting him go is if Geelong gave us an offer that was too good to be true. But given it's Geelong, that's highly unlikely.

if we went the player route, any thoughts who we'd take for roma?
No way Geelong give up anyone from there GF team plus Stewart. Their depth isnt great either, so its pretty average options. Would have to be a fringe player (Stevens, Bruhn, O.Henry etc.) to go along with a first rounder (or 2) given it will be at around pick 20 this year and probably similar next year.

If I've been working somewhere for 10 years and the bosses bring someone else to do my job for twice the pay, but tell me i can cover the new guy on his breaks, I would probably be looking for a new job.

At the end of the day, this is their job, they have to look out for themselves above all.
Except he signed a contract and got paid up front for it. I guess he could just make things up and put them in the public domain as a show of character…

Marshall requests a trade and look at all the tin foil hat wearers wet the beds. Geelong need to stump up overs for Marshall or we hold him to his contract. Simple
I don't see anyone wetting their beds.
We’ve all said the same thing.
A contract’s a contract unless we are happy with the return.

We'd wanna be confident that King will be fit for most of next year if we trade Marshall. Don't fancy having Keeler and Sharman as the full time key forwards.
Trading Marshall is a bad idea. King has basically being a non event for 3 years.

His body is a massive concern. Too frail.

Keep Ro, a late first rounder in a crap draft sucks.

We’ve also paid him the majority of his contract, haven't we?
So moving is a nice way to double dip.
Hope we play hard ball.

Did I watch a different Ro to everyone this year? Genuinely laboured, ineffective forward of centre, liability in the ruck.

Yes he had a significant injury that he carried but not many big blokes get back to their best after 30 years old when they’ve had such a limiting injury.

If Geelong stump up their first pick, take it and run.

Of all the times to play hard ball on a trade, Ro is the time. He is exactly what the cats need and want. They are smack bang in the window. Need to force their desperate hand, they have it all to gain and us nothing to lose.
No idea who is the backup ruck to TDK now in a regular basis. JSOS does not want to be doing it

Or

Rowan, we recognise their is part of your job that you are excellent at (around the ground) and part of your job that you lack compared to your rivals (centre square).

We want to bring in someone who can do the job with you and get the best of your strengths around the ball and save your body from rucking every minute of every game.

Ultimately he can do what he wants. That’s his call. But he also needs to accept a possibility he is back at Moorabbin day 1 of preseason as well.

He won’t be given away.

I’m sure they will.

But I’m resigned to him going. I think the club has aswell considering he wasn’t part of their long term plans 2 weeks ago.

I just know Ross really wanted him to give it a crack for a season.
