If i was Starcevich, even if i desired to leave the club on good terms, i would be getting p***ed at Brisbane. The difference between what we are offering him and what Brisbane can offer is probably a mile wide. He is entitled to leave and take up the better offer. If i was him and Brisbane were messing around with my financial future with these games i would be wanting to make public threats to them to take what is on the table or i will leave for nothing.

If I was him I’d take the two years at Brisbane, hopefully win a couple of flags then leave as an UFA in 2027.

And hope like hell I don’t get another head knock.

What would he be on at Brisbane? 500 - 600k? Big difference, even over the two years. If i was him with his history of concussions and somebody was offering me a 6 year contract with a 50% pay rise and no out clauses for that club i would bite their arm off in enthusiasm to take the offer.

Maybe I dont understand how this all works, but protect Pick 2?

Brisbane chased a Free Agent, committed to him and made a contract offer.
Oscar, based on that commitment, has told us he will be accepting the contract and moving to Brisbane.
Based on the offer, we have been communicating to Oscar we will not be matching.

If Brisbane pulls out of this deal because they want something better, Starcevich, this looks quite poor on Brisbane. They have a player this week who is planning to move his life to another state.

Good concept but it somehow manages to be simultaneously out of date and factoring trades that haven’t yet happened

Can’t claim knowledge on any other clubs but in respect to West Coast the numbers add up to 47 players. I presume it’s still including Sheed and McGovern but adding in Starcevich as his 6 year deal would be the only one stretching to 2031

Not sure how they arrive at 8 players contracted to 2025 as we only have 5 (6 if you include Sheed)

On another subject, i saw on Ten news tonight that one of our academy products has rocketed up draft projections after standing out at the draft combine and may now attract a top 40 pick. Why didn't somebody from the club have a quiet word with our academy products in coded language and ask them if they really want to go to the Draft combine given that the club whose academy they are already in is guaranteed to pick them up if nobody else is bidding on them? There are ways of communicating that without breaking the rules by actually spelling it out them.

Clarkes interview was pretty good except I didnt like this answer. Shouldve been an emphatic no chance, instead he said - Ideally and at this stage.

On pick 16 not being part of any Starcevich trade:

“Ideally, yes. We think it’s a really valuable pick and we put a lot of work into that last year getting that in, so yeah at this stage that’s going to stay with us.”
If 16 was involved but we got their first back I wouldn’t care.

Wow, only just got to listen to the Brisbane manager here. Very arrogant stuff.

For those who are unaware, when exchanging players or picks, you can only involve players or picks - so for example, having "we won't bid on your academy players" is not allowed. I've referenced this before as the reason why any pick swap with gc HAS to involve us giving them more points, otherwise it's way too obvious what's going on.

By saying that the Allen stuff is tied up with Starcevich, the Brisbane manager is getting dangerously close to admitting to breaking these rules. There's arguably a defense that he could make by saying something along the lines of "we have to get Starc's salary off the books before we can make the offer to Allen" but it's fishy as ****. I guess they've gotten pretty cocky knowing that Swann will be the guy deciding if they've broken the rules or not.

But they are involved with each other. If OA was nit going to Brisbane we would not be trading for Starcevich would we. So to say they are not linked is just crazy talk. We have chosen to trade. Not sure why anyone is upset with anything at this stage.

Keys - can you please pin the presser? It’s a much more expansive overview of WCE position on key deals than the Twomey chit chat.

Done

Just on that interview I noted that when talking about Robertson he said how happy he was that Dev had committed to the club without mentioning anything about getting a trade done

Hopefully that means we plan on adding him as a DFA/SSP to the rookie list which is the smart thing to from a list management point of view

So if the Eagles and Brissy can't negotiate a deal for Starc can he not just become a uncontracted free agent and nominate for the pre season draft? Then we'd just pick him at No1? Surely that would have a bearing on how things play out.
Nah, national draft.

Yeah threaten people, that’s the go🙄

I was laughing when I heard him talking about Ah Chee and how important he is, and his selling point was that was how good their winning percentage is in games that Ah Chee has played in. Yeah no shit, because your worst home and away record since he arrived was 14 wins, 8 losses, 1 draw (and that was last year when they won the bloody premiership). Literally everyone who has been at the Lions for the past few years has won a lot more than they’ve lost.

Real “could sell bacon to a vegan” vibes with that dude.
I’ve always viewed both him and Starc as those good role players you need to win a flag but you take them away from a winning environment and they are quite average or decent.

Starc is ok but actually don’t rate Ah chee at all and he is a slightly better version of his brother

There's literally no way that any club would pick up Starcevich in the ND before our compo pick, nor before our second if he could put a price tag on it. Doesn't seem to be any way he'd consider the draft as a viable option either.

But wonder what he'd do, if push came to shove, if the trade period came to a close and Brissie weren't budging from trying to pry out a higher pick.

I kinda want to find out?

He has $6 million dollars on the line which will set him up for the rest of his life.

And i am pretty sure it will have an impact on Brisbane's negotiating position. Just as Bailey Smith doing likewise to the Bulldogs last year made sure he got to Geelong for what Geelong were willing to offer.

So if it was me then yeah i would make my position crystal clear to them and try and force their hand. What would you do? Sit there and do nothing while Brisbane's list manager put your $6 million in doubt?

I don't watch enough Brisbane games, but can someone please explain the Stracevich thing...

He's 26 years old and has a history of concussion. Taking him as a free agent? Fine. Even at $900k... given we almost certainly have cap space we need to dump. But the moment the AFL refused to let us take him without affecting Oscar's compensation pick? We should have walked away from the deal.

I don't want to give up pick 23, let alone pick 16.

This guy is one hit away from being medically retired in his first year. It's utter madness.

I'd rather take a chance on Oliver. At least he'd address one our biggest gaps, the midfield.

I don't want to give up pick 23,

You do realise giving up the compo pick (23) is exactly the same result for us as being able to take him without it affecting Oscars compo?

They're just playing chicken as free agency period ends before trade period. Unfortunately they're negotiating against this rabble we call our trade team. This is the same guy that signed off on that terrible baker trade.

For one thing, only one of those players wants to come play for the Eagles.
