And to think this thread started on Thursday…

I don't watch enough Brisbane games, but can someone please explain the Stracevich thing...

He's 26 years old and has a history of concussion. Taking him as a free agent? Fine. Even at $900k... given we almost certainly have cap space we need to dump. But the moment the AFL refused to let us take him without affecting Oscar's compensation pick? We should have walked away from the deal.

I don't want to give up pick 23, let alone pick 16.

This guy is one hit away from being medically retired in his first year. It's utter madness.

I'd rather take a chance on Oliver. At least he'd address one our biggest gaps, the midfield.

We should be trying to get both him and Oliver. It’s almost like our club doesn’t want to fix the midfield

He has $6 million dollars on the line which will set him up for the rest of his life.

And i am pretty sure it will have an impact on Brisbane's negotiating position. Just as Bailey Smith doing likewise to the Bulldogs last year made sure he got to Geelong for what Geelong were willing to offer.

So if it was me then yeah i would make my position crystal clear to them and try and force their hand. What would you do? Sit there and do nothing while Brisbane's list manager put your $6 million in doubt?
IMG_2200.jpeg I’ll leave you with a pair of these, it might help, that’s what I’ll do.

The pick 16 is not in play "at this stage" comment bothers me a bit, but at least we're not considering it atm. Hopefully he's not bluffing. Needs to either be used as a pick upgrade or to pick up a slider.
Can’t remember his exact wording but wasn’t it “at this stage we’ll have it”? ie. could be used in an upgrade somewhere else, not necessarily Starcevich related.

That’s exactly as I took it. It may be used for something else or elsewhere but not for Starcevich

What happens if say Brisbane offer band 2 contract for Allen and we match it? Can someone walk me through that?

And then if Brisbane still want him they will lose even more draft capital to get Oscar and will no longer be able to match any bid on Annable.
Well done Brisbane!
So what you’re saying is we hold the whip hand in these negotiations. There’s no need to threaten people or label our recruiting staff idiots. Like some of the less intelligent posters we have on this forum.
Just have a bit of patience and a deal will be done.

Precisely. Accurate on all counts.

We'd love pick 2. But as long as we remain patient the only thing stopping this from happening in an amicable manner is Brisbane's apparent hubris.

If Brisbane are steadfast on pick 16, we can just wait for free agency to finish on Friday. Until free agency finishes the ball is completely in Brisbane's court.
In the meantime with a bit of luck we can bundle 16 with another pick to get another top 10 pick, leaving Brisbane with no real option but to go for one of our later picks.

This is the year to make a statement that we won't be pushed over and really disrupt the trade and draft period that will be remembered.

Wait out the free agency period. If they offer band 2 for Oscar match then we force a trade. Brisbane wont offer a reasonable trade? That's cool. We take Oscar back and Brisbane's reputation is smeared to future potential free agency and trade targets.

In response to the above we speak to Starcevich and tell him the contract will be honoured but we can only take you through the PSD considering our draft hand has been weakened by Brisbane's antics. If he doesnt want to do that, that's fine it's his choice. He can't play the 'I want to look after Brisbane' card, given they didn't look after him.

Then we earn the respect of 16 AFL teams and all their supporters by bidding on Anabelle at 1, Uwland at 2 and Patterson at 3 and making these clubs pay the absolute most.

There isn't really a standout #1 pick and these Academy kids are worthy pick 1 contenders that we would be happy to have in our team should they choose not to match.

Clarke would be a God and teams will take us seriously in the future.

What we lose is this draft isn't much and it can be risked. So we should do it.

I still don't get what Brisbane are doing regarding delaying the FA paperwork for Allen

Can't see how we can offer a trade for Starc without knowing 100 percent the compensation in the first place

ALso advise Brisbane that we intend to be active, and not waiting for there lodgement before making any moves so some of our current picks may not longer be available

I really don’t think firing bids out at all the academy kids is really going to win friends at the other 16 clubs considering that every club has benefited to some degree or other from academies and father-son. Like I doubt that Collingwood (Daicos brothers, Darcy Moore), the Bulldogs (Darcy, Libba), Sydney (Herbert, Mills, Blakey, Gulden), Carlton (Harry Dean this year, Cody Walker next year) are going to be handing out high fives for bidding the hell out of academy kids.

Starcevich won't nominate for the draft.
The guy just won a second premiership with the Lions and will not be burning bridges with players, coaches, and staff that he will likely be seeing every year for the next 40 years. He would be a premiership pariah if he screws them.

I'm in favour of just doing what Hawks did last year. Trade the 16 in a package for a top 10 pick and tell Brisbane they can only take what we still have.
16 absolutely needs to be used for an upgrade, not Starcevich.

I see what you're going for, but the Hawks did us dirty last year. Us trading out 16 should in no way be seen as an affront to Brisbane.

they think that we think that we want Starcevich more than they want Allen.

they also saw what our list manager did last year and waiting to see who cracks first.

We have won 11 games in 90 matches. Who needs friends?

Geelong and Hawthorn have no friends

No they think we want pick 2 and are testing us to see which pick we are willing to give up for it.

In this situation you have to think of the club not how we/you are viewed publicly by fans or by rival clubs.

The question should be are we better off with pick 2 and Starcevich or pick 16, Allen and Starcevich?

That should be the situation on the white board that is being war gamed out.

We aren't looking for respect we are looking for results.

Another telling thing that Clarke said is "we haven't speculated on what we would do with pick 2 since we don't have it yet." Either he's telling porkie pies or that should be concerning for us.
