Top teams have good mature players, we do not and we can't attract them to the club so the best course of action is to accumulate elite quality talent whilst we get experience into the talent we have acquired.

The problem isn't taking a risk, the problem is if there is something fundamentally wrong with list management and being aware exactly where you are at and what you need to do to improve.

I think the right time to invest in the future was 2023, but our club chronically overrated where we were at and I think kept expecting us to improve just by adding list cloggers to our list.

There is going to be elite mids in every draft, it doesn't matter which drafts you pick them up in but we have just been taking anyone that is good regardless if they would gel in our setup or not. Part of what has been holding us back is the midfield doesn't gel like a proper midfield, everyone is ball hunting and we have no idea what to do after we win the ball.

It was pretty obvious to me in 2023 we weren't going to be taking any quantum leaps forward without something significant changing, and nothing did. That was the year to take a proper look at the list and where the holes were and address it.

We were given an end of first round pick for 2023 and two end of first round 2024 picks that we didn't need to trade out for players, plus our two extra rookie spots. They said they would have reviewed our 2024 picks but we were going nowhere in 2024, we wouldn't have lost them.

So what we did:

Traded 2024 pick 19 and pick 44 to Swans for Stephens and pick 25.
Traded 2024 pick 20 to GC for pick 18
Traded picks 21 and 25 to Carlton for Fisher and 17
Traded pick 65 to Richmond for Bigoa Nyuon
Traded pick 48 to Port for 2024 4th round pick

We drafted
McKercher #2
Duursma #4 (McKay compo)
Dawson #22 (Carlton trade)
Hardeman #23 (GC trade)

I am happier with the Dawson and Hardeman pickups than I am with the McKercher and Duursma ones. They are great talents but we got McKercher after knowing Tasmania was coming in soon and would be a major flight risk, we also didn't have a midfield spot for him so just left him at half-back. Duursma a great talent but we have made zero effort to integrate him into the side.

I think we should have cashed in picks 2 and 4 for later picks and get some future picks. We were linked with both Curtin and Caddy but they were out of the 2-4 range. Bulldogs paid picks 10, 17 and 2024 1st round pick in exchange for pick 4, 46, 51 and 2024 3rd round. Melbourne paid 14, 27 and 35 to move up 14 to 11. Geelong and Richmond traded their first round picks during the draft. There was scope for us to move into the Curtain and Caddy range, get some extra 2024 picks, not trade our assistance picks and still have currency for Dawson and Hardeman.

We should have Curtin, Caddy, Dawson and Hardeman plus a massive crop of picks for 2024 in the region where all the KPP talent was. We could have still taken FOS and replaced all the list cloggers for top end KPP prospects.

Trading our 2025 first round pick for pick 27 was a symptom of botching the 2023 period. We've had to shove our list full of amateur league footballers because we dropped the ball on list management. On the plus side, that act of desperation has unearthed a decent prospect in Trembath.

Had we done that we could have still picked up an elite quality mid in the 2025 draft, but pick someone that we think will gel well with what we have, even if they are not the 3rd best player of the pool. There is no point getting the best available if we have too many like them and they wont get game time.
It's been done to death, but for sure we missed a few opportunities, such as trading the JHF pick to Crows (at the time I didn't think it was a great deal but Crows stagnated the next year), shifting back with the Duursma pick with the Dees to take Curtin/COS/Caddy (would've got lucky with Tauru the next year as Dees nosedived unexpectedly), and there's a few trades we could have not done (CCJ & BGeorge, Fisher) in hindsight and we'd probably be better off. Anyway, what's done is done. At some point we need to move on and deal with the present.

They might have issues trading back and getting any real value. Unless there is someone that a club absolutely wants that will be gone prior to their pick then I don’t think there will be much of a bidding war for it.
* would only be interested in getting Willem or CDT at 1 or 2, so not necessarily the Tigers picks.
Maybe Swans to get something higher for Curnow?
I can't see teams giving up 2026 picks if they think they are in the hunt for Butters.

Shit. After seeing Freo's trading nouse think I'd be offering Brady a 5 year extension.

That's a shocker.
Yeah it's a strange one. I know they needed a pick more than 33 for McVee, but they've given up a potential shot at Jacob Farrow with pick 12, who they could've used off half back next year.
Don't know why they didn't trade up with 33, 44, 53 and/or futures for an early R2.
Maybe no teams wanted to slide back, but * or Blues could've probably used some more points with NGA kids.

I’m jumping ahead about 10 pages but I don’t have time to read through every post re: Maley. The dude can barely get boot to ball. He makes Tsatas look like Darren Jarman.

Yeah, he’s got athleticism but he can’t play footy. He has zero chance of making it as a footballer. I’m going against the opinions of people I respect on this occasion but so be it.
Spot on. He was taken from the suburban league and still looks like a suburban footballer. Trembath was taken from a suburban league and looks like a potential AFL player.

Simply with positioning without the ball, timing with the leap and kicking a football.

I like Maley, he’s a weird likeable cat, but we aren’t playing for sheep stations. If he was eligible, he would make a great category B rookie type player. Unfortunately Finbar simply isn’t good enough for a primary list spot.

Other teams looking at him would be eyeing off a rookie list soot, not a primary list position. Which is where he is at. If we could get something in trade value, i’d take it and run.

As a rookie. We aren’t able to keep him as a rookie any longer
Wrong you can be on the rookie list for 3 years

This year is his second

We can keep Finnbar for one more year on the rookie list

Or if we want we can promote him to the senior list now or in a years time

Then a rookie spot is fine. I thought his time was done. Definitely not good enough for a primary list spot

How so hoffseason gains 01, how do we get involved and with whom
West Coast, Essendon and North are only 3 teams in my opinion that at this point could trade up using 2nd round capital (maybe Melbourne after Petracca/McVee/Oliver trades). Now West Coast has already gone and traded their second round capital out. I think if we were to trade up it would be with Carlton who are expecting a Dean bid. The ? Is who would it be worth trading up for and what do we give up. Again this is all just my opinion.

What If?

Swallow comes to North and clicks his fingers and Simpkin forgets he was ever a midfielder?

:stern look
is a 33 year old Swallow better in that defenisive mid position than a 29 yr old Steele... both are stop gaps so we need to still be looking at developing someone to play that (is it Urqhuart), or do we still need to bring in that longer term option at some point...

2024
Didn't have a high pick because they traded it for Liam Baker and ****ing Matt Owies. With the pick they got back they took Bo Allan

2023
#1 Reid

2022
Traded #2 for #8 & #12
#8 Ginbey
#12 Elijah Hewett

2021
Traded the #12 pick mid draft for #14 and took Campbell Chesser

2020
Didn't pick until #52 because they traded #18 as part of the Tim Kelly deal

2019
Didn't pick until #54 because they traded every pick they had for Kelly

2018
Won the flag

Twomey's tweet is horseshit. It's a good deal in isolation but it papers over them winning a flag five years ago, and also the terrible Kelly deal being the reason they didn't have many picks subsequently, and doesn't take into account Chesser failing, them bailing out of Jagga Smith to take Ginbey and Hewett (decent players).

The AFL has essentially gifted them Starcevich, and herbs and spices gets them #2 for Allen, who's crocked.

Hopefully to get one of small forward, kpf or rebounding half back
