Why doesn't the AFL finally put the NRL back into its place?!

Few things more boring than code wars

It’s only on the agenda because Peter V’landys has the greatest inferiority complex of any human on the planet and cannot get past it.

Both sports are fine

You can enjoy either or god forbid, both.

You can’t get rid of a sport anyway, if people want to watch or play it they will.

I think if he liked soccer, he might give it a go at say age 27 after making his fortune but I assume he probably doesn't like it, prefers NBA of the other sports. If Tom Green thought he could make it perhaps he would give it a go.
Lol! Soccer is not AFL that you can pickup later in life and make it. Is a more skilled sport, If you didn't start as a kid you can't make it to the pro level

He woulnd't find a spot in a amateur team

Whilst Rugby League have a NSW heartland, and Qld/Nth Qld heritage, a State of Origin series that just enthralls, a National team and a World Cup, why would they be blown away?
League isn't that popular as an international sport, as much as they like to pretend it is.

The biggest league for it is right here in Australia, followed by France, I think.

Union is far more popular as an international sport.

lol wut? At least try to maintain a pretense of knowing what you’re talking about.

You’ve not heard of the Super League?

It’s by far the second biggest comp in the world. 12 teams, players are well paid and can compete to some extent with the NRL in that regard, and the top half dozen teams all average over 10,000 per home game.

France has a team in the Super League (Catalan Dragons) which made the grand final a couple of years ago and just had a second team promoted to it (Toulouse Olympique) for the second time. France is a former top tier league nation (they have made a World Cup final and beat Australia numerous times previously and had a player play for the Roosters in the last decade or so) but aren’t a ‘prominent’ league nation as such. The south of France has a reasonably strong league presence around Perpignan. But it’s not a ‘strong’ nation. Its domestic competition is not ‘strong’ as such and its current international team is not especially good. The mainland European team that’s actually excelling is the Netherlands who has gotten into the top 10 in the world and gone past countries that actually do have SOME sort of attachment to the game like Lebanon etc, and has created its own domestic competition.

Of course union is a more popular international sport: it’s been around longer, is entrenched in places like Ireland and South America not to mention South Africa.

The 21,000 people who showed up to watch NZ play Samoa seemed to quite enjoy it on the weekend, though.

Well, I'm aware RL comes from some small mining town in England.

I guess I was thinking of French Rugby union, which is very popular over there.

League is really only popular here/NZ and in England but even then, crowds aren't exactly what you'd call 'spectacular'.

It's not the dominant sport in any major country it's played in professionally although at a national level, it's more popular here than union.

AFL entrenching themselves in Queensland is something the NRL can't do in Victoria, SA or WA.

If this trend continues eventually the AFL will pull away.
If the Perth Bears start winning people will care (see Scorchers and Wildcats when they were good).

I've already said because of the Perth Bears, I'm going to go out and learn the rules to NRL and buy a shirt. None of this makes me a bad supporter of AFL/Freo - but interestingly, the AFL gives zero shits about WA as both clubs are bottom 4 in funding distribution and the only clubs that fund their states junior pathways without first access... so lowkey want the NRL to do well here so the AFL can be forced to pay attention.

Does it need to be?
They’ve just sold 50,000 tickets to sell out Everton’s stadium, as well as sold out the Headingley Union ground in Leeds, and 60,000 tickets to Wembley for the 3 Ashes tests coming up.

It’s doing well enough.

AFL is so ****ing boring live. Both teams are in one half of the ground. Back in the old days you could heckle the full forwards because they were stationed in the goal square lmao

Explain to me why they changed the tv ratings? Why is it now based on 'average viewership' rather than just those watching? Shouldn't it be on the length of time watching? Wouldn't this be a better gauge for sponsors?

Then there's the 'most valuable club' counting league clubs rather than what they make as a football entity through memberships, merchandise etc The fact that the government even allows sporting clubs to profit from gambling is disgusting imho.

As far as I see, it's always that dickhead V'Landys throwing shit against the AFL to try to maintain the delusion that the NRL is bigger than the AFL?

Has the AFL CEO's ever thrown any back?
No need. Afl is the superior sport. Look at how many countries the grand final was watched in. The NRL grand final was watched in 8 countries only.

Australia
USA
England
Ireland
Northern Ireland
Wales
Scotland
Queensland

Don't feel bad that the AFL got dudded on a dick measure contest when they changed the rules. The advertisers / TV deals will understand all the correct metrics and pay accordingly.

The AFL like to do this all the time anyway, hence why membership numbers are through the roof. Anybody want a $10 x 3 game membership or how about a membership which gives you cheaper KAYO at the same time?

Of course I think union about 5 times as popular. But League has a few things going for it that AFL doesn’t so it’s not going anywhere soon.

Northern England seems to talk about league a bit in general conversation too.

The two competitions can exist alongside each other. There are areas that are NRL dominant that would be very hard for the AFL to get a foothold in. Townsville, for instance.

You'll enjoy it.

I do worry how competitive the Bears will be the first few years. Hopefully NRL headquarters will support them but they haven't done a good job in the past. Will likely get Munster and few top players though. Supporting the Bears will like supporting the Lions - two town team. The Bears have enough supporters to make games in Sydney events.

Games are shorter so won't be as big of a time sink. I find AFL games are often too long, especially when there are other things to do.

Good luck trying understanding how 6 again is applied and the arbitrary use of the sin bin. Also there is a lot of player club movement, so that also takes awhile to get used to. There are some big personalities in the game - both on and off the field. NRL360 is mostly a lot of arguing. The Qld vs NSW dislike is real and is always talked about. The game is still very NSW centric just like the AFL media focused on Victoria. Nothing that will shock a person from WA.

Union is massive in the UK, NZ and South Africa and has an enormous following in Argentina and France.

But that's basically it, maybe Japan too.

Union definitely the bigger sport everywhere but Australia.

Although, sometimes it feels a bit sorry for elite AFL players that they dont have international competition. I wonder how good Nick Daicos would be at Soccer, could he make it in Europe. His life of course, not my business.
