Would the new rules suit Hawks style of play or not?
The good teams always find a way to benefit

But we need our midfield situation to change and I think that ruck shift is going to be a big difference in how teams lpay the centre square.

One of our biggest problem's in 2025, in the first half of the year at least, was slowing down a team that had a run of goals going. Centre boucne clearances were our absolute kryponite when things were going badly - so if we can use this rule change to become one of the best clearance teams again it could really work for us.

Shrug rule is going to work against Newcombe in a big way. He and Worpel always opted to twist their way out of trouble. Ginni and Watson will still be umpired differently to everyone because morons can't get over 2024.

I'm not sure how but I think the last touch rule might work for us

But surely if you shrug out of a tackle and get rid of it straight away, you'll be fine?

It’s strange how the AFL hates dead time in games yet won’t shorten the time off between goals.

Also the shrugging rule is silly. Pretty much any attempt to take on the tackle and move the ball on will be a free against. Yet farcical acts like holding the ball to your body with your free arm is a ball up. Blicavs had a blatant one in the grand final.

It punishes players for trying to take the game on while rewarding players who win the ball to get a ball up.
The time between goals is purely for commercials

There will be an over correction at the start of the year when everyone will be pinged until it settles down properly.

Why do you think booting it OOF down field is the most likely outcome of this change?

The rule is for last disposal out of bounds. And a disposal is already defined as a handball or kick. A ruck tap or a fumble aren’t disposals and are already covered by existing rules (can’t tap it out over the line and incorrect disposal respectively).

If a player is hemmed in on the boundary between the arcs without a good option inboard then they’re likely to do exactly what they have been doing already: Attempt to have the tackle carry them out of bounds before holding the ball can be called.

Coaches will never instruct their players to take any action that guarantees giving clear possession to the opposition.

This is also one of the few rule changes that has been properly tested in other competitions and analyzed thoroughly for impact. Short of one of the more tactically minded coaches coming up with an innovative way to take advantage of it, it’s unlikely to change the way the game is played significantly outside of slightly reducing instances of kicking down the line to gain territory.
It's like replying to a monkey.

Shrugging a tackle is now considered prior opportunity. But the tackle still needs to stick to count.

I don't think it's a rule brought in to stop the likes of Newcombe who will shrug a tackle and slip out of it most of the time. It's to target guys like Ginnivan and Watson who less often slip out of it and instead get taken high.

But I also don't think it's going to be too bad as even before this change umpires were rarely paying those two free kicks in those instances anyway. So now it just forces umpires to officiate it the same against all the other small forwards in the league.

Out of these rule changes, what do you suggest makes things worse?
The stand rule change is absolute nonsense. The way it's written, it indicates that if there was a free kick in a centre clearance situation then every opposition player in the 5m radius would not be able to move.

The other point is that they're rule changes to ameliorate other issues by previous rule changes. It's reactive nonsense.

Clearly, not every opposition player will need to stand, stop catastrophizing things.

I'm gonna react one time to this, and just know that it's coming from someone that others would say the exact same thing about - the way you respond to people on this board is almost exclusively shitty and dismissive.

I know it's easy when you feel you're always on the right side, but maybe you could be a bit more diplomatic.
