Why doesn't the AFL finally put the NRL back into its place?!

I would disagree. A lot of people follow EPL, Serie A, etc but sadly it does not translate to following the local game for various reasons.

The Socceroo's/Matida's would comfortably be our most popular national teams ATM.
Matildas was a the perfect storm a great team made deep run playing at home. NBA is most popular foreign league in Australia

NBA is nonsense. And I'm half yank. I get Football, Baseball... but Basquet? What a garbage sport. There no defence allowed, it's a nonsense. Basquet used to be good, hard sport in the 90s and further back to Pistons etc, but nowadays it's a soft schamozzle.

The thread title reminds me of a quote from True Romance: "He said Sicilians were spawned from N-words so Don Vincenzo bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwww him away."

In response to the topic, it's unfortunate that back in the late 1800s and early 1900s NSW and Queenslander insecurity instilled an ingrained hatred for the Great Indigenous Australian game just because it originated in Victoria.

They preferred supporting pretty lacklustre, mediocre, boring, repetitive Pommy sports in the form of the thugbies than support an exciting home grown one (unlike SA, WA, Tassie, etc.. so good on them I guess), like I said all because it committed the grave sin of having roots in Melbourne.

The way to win the hearts of sports lovers in NSW and Qld is to convert children early on when they begin to take an interest in sports (around the ages of 7 and 12) but unfortunately the biases and prejudices of their parents and adult legal guardians get in the way of these children embracing the Great Game, hence why it's been very difficult for footy (unquestionably a vastly superior game to either of the thugbies) to have taken a significant foothold in those states to date.

Targeting anyone over 16 is pointless as by that stage very few people (less than 5% would be my guess) are willing to give other sports a chance.

If I were in charge of promoting footy in NSW/Qld I would put a lot of funding on focusing and targeting young thugbies hopefuls (between the ages of 10 and 15) that are turned away from the thugbies because they don't have the right body type (burly and no neck security stooge body type) and entice them to play a game that their body type (taller, athletic, lean, etc) is more suited to.

And yes it is absolutely important that the AFL blows the NRL away because as long it is the dominant sport in NSW and Qld it is sadly robbing footy (a vastly superior game) of potential super stars. The sooner those rubbish so-called games disappear, the better.

The AFL can put a nail in the NRL coffin by simply having a 7pm starting time for the Grand Final. Tradition has to now make way for the now and the TV ratings saw the NRL win the GF battle because they played in PRIMETIME! The AFL is by far the most popular sport in the country, but are lagging behind when it comes to the showpiece game of the year! Like it or not footy fans night time is the right time. Start the game at 7pm and it's all over by 9.30pm plenty of time for celebrations and awarding of Premiership medals, the ground would be empty by 11pm! The AFL Grand Final must go PRIMETIME, when they do they will blow the NRL completely away..

Unless the recently announced rule changes have a dramatic effect, footy games are rarely over in two and a half hours. From siren to siren these days it’s about two hours and 45 to 50 minutes.

They might have to make further adjustments? But one thing is definitely being discussed at AFL headquarters is the need to have a Twilight (5pm start) or Night Time (7pm start) Grand Final and as each day goes by the AFL hierarchy want the game played in Primetime whether the fans like that or not, obviously as a TV audience they don't? I have no doubt a 7pm game commencement is the way to go and the sooner it happens the better, fans will scream and yell for a very short time and once we have had one we will never look back! The AFL have the biggest game in the land, but are not capitalising on their biggest day! Even if the game finished at 9.45pm they could still empty the place by 11pm? It's would be a Saturday night, is going home between 11pm and midnight that much of a problem?

In reality is it not just because geographical location meant that Perth And Adelaide's trade and people movement links were via the south coast of Australia and hence with Melbourne?

I don’t think the afl should move the grand final time just to compete against the nrl in a war for tv ratings. The afl needs to be great at being the afl, rather than trying to copy whatever the nrl are doing.

There’s many in the nrl community that would prefer to have a day grand final, and they had very strong ratings in afternoon finals slots this year so there is growing impetus to move it to the afternoon. PVL even talked about reviewing the potential to moving the grand final time to the afternoon which is a family friendly time slot that many fans prefer.

The afl moving to night time while the nrl potentially moves to afternoon could be a dangerous egg on face moment for the afl.

Even worse if the afl move it to the night and still get lower ratings than the nrl gf. It’s not a given the afl gf would rate higher if both were at night.

All the nrl finals games this year rated higher than the afl finals, both day games and night games.

A twilight GF would be a good start. The NRL have completely sold out on their fans by holding it on Sunday at night purely for the ratings. At the very least though, I don't think we should be giving the NRL a free hit by allowing them to start before our season begins and continue after our season finishes. Why can't our season go longer?

Anything the AFL does blows up in their face, the NRL is a supremely run organisation from grass roots, to the big time..

They attempted to go prime time during COVID and it was a dogs breakfast. The AFL Grand Final belongs during the day.

A third of the NRL player base were not even alive last time the NRL had a day grand final. The nrl ‘have’ sold out its fans? There has been one day grand final this century and we are a quarter of the way through it

This.
Imagine if the AFL GF was on at 7pm on a Sunday night and NRL on at 2pm on a Saturday.
The delusion would finally be over.

All the NRL have to do (and it's so smart) is put the game on prime time Sunday night at 7pm and then scream it's the most popular game in Australia look at the ratings.
Of course simple people are going believe it. The ratings show it.

Do people even realize that NRL Grand Final tickets go on sale months before it's even played or even before finals during the normal season and any person in the country can just buy a ticket if they want even in the week of the Grand Final?

It's not just day v night, it's also Saturday v Sunday, 3 hours v 2 hours. That's why NRL GF rates so high.

This is true but I can't see the AFL moving our Grand Final to the Sunday. What I would love to see, is the AFL extending our season to match the NRL and have our GF on the same weekend as theirs. Why should we allow the NRL to overshadow our ultimate game with their prelim finals in the Northern States, but we give them clean air for their game?

So. Ask them not to do it if it upsets you so much. I didn’t realise it was against the imaginary set of rules you seem so upset that the NRL is breaking.

League isn't that popular as an international sport, as much as they like to pretend it is.

The biggest league for it is right here in Australia, followed by France, I think.

Union is far more popular as an international sport.
That’s not the point.

The point is that, in those respects listed by the poster, league is much bigger than AFL.

Melbourne being the larger settlement and becoming influential to the other cities to the West has something to do with footy becoming popular in those states, no doubt.

But from what I've read about the history of Aussie Rules in Qld and NSW back in the late 1800 and early 1900s, footy was growing in popularity in those states at the time and the powers that be went out of their way to snuff it out and not let it take hold there, which are actions that reek of insecurity.

And rest assured the main reason was because the game was labeled as 'Victorian/Melburnian' and hence such a game could not be embraced and adopted by people in NSW and Qld.

Funny how basketball is truly the only world sport that has come out of the US. The few countries in the Caribbean, Latin America and Japan that play baseball are not enough to qualify it as a world game, especially where it is a distant second to soccer in many of those countries. Same thing with ice hockey and grid iron just has a tiny cultish following around the world.

Basketball is popular world wide as it is the only US sport that is free flowing and doesn't have the large gaps of inaction that baseball and gridiron have. Ice Hockey is a weird soccer alternative, soccer but using sticks to hit a puck on ice.

You do know there’s a professional league competition in the UK right? Where they just had crowds of 60,000 and 50,000 attend international games.. and there’s like 60 professional and semi professional league clubs across the UK and France across multiple competitions and divisions.

League may not be a major worldwide sport and way less so than union, but it has a solid niche and growing.
