rocker_oz33 made me think of this but remember when the supermarkets had a buzzer at the butchers section and you could get the butcher to come out and get you the cut of meat you wanted. Also remember watching the butchers cut stuff up at the super market

Yeah i was just remembering coming back from lunch period pretty banged up after we were all going for "MODRA!!!" hangers and bolting after the loose ball gets 🤣

Then there was ALWAYS the obligatory Jimoen inspired "STACKS ON!!!!" from the mid-late 90s

They used to have skilled Butchers at supermarkets and Beef hung up in the cool rooms you could punch like in the rocky movie.
Pretty sure it comes packed from a warehouse these days.

Mrs R used to work at a local butcher she did their books for them/
The butchers used to grab a steak for lunch and stuff to take home.
While she was only allowed to have certain things.

Some MR Big brought it and they went broke and closed up.

Absolutely. Although now its cricket season. When i ask my boys how school was all i generally get is "Took 2 wickets at lunch time"

As a teacher, the worst class period to teach in a boys' school was the period after lunch. After all of the most spectacular marks or wickets ever taken, the stench in the classroom was almost unbearable as well as the adrenalin spurt. Took half the period to settle them down.

I remember footy/soccer being easier. You can just play king of the pack and everyone is entertained or throw a couple of jumpers down for goals and play 5 on 5 on 20 on 20 soccer. From memory cricket used to work better if there was a teacher involved not letting kids bowl 40 ball overs or bat all of lunch for the red dot etc. whereas if you were playing footy you wanted the duty teacher to **** off so you could tackle as hard as you want.

Re trains.

I remember those little rooms you slide the door open on the trains fit maybe 4 people each side.
People would face you and starting making conversations.

Harare to Vic Falls was a great train trip. You went overnight to Bulawayo then overnight again to Vic Falls, you had a couchette and there was a bar and dining car. It was a very respectable way to travel.

Does anyone under 70 get the Indian Pacific?

I like trains, but there is **** all between Perth and Adelaide and I am guessing **** all most of the way from Adelaide to Sydney. Cheapest fare is about $3000 to sit on a train for 4-5 days. Maybe in another 30 years I will get it but right now I can't see it.

Last week we went to Paris from Cannes by train, it’s about 900 kms.
The first 1 hours the train is a little slow to do the 150 kms to Marseille, after that the train speeds up to around 300kmh and does the last 800 kms in 3 hours for a 5 hour total. It’s way more pleasant than dealing with airports and drops you in the centre of Paris.

VLine brought them back. My Mum was over from UK a few years ago. Said she hadn't been in one of those trains since the 1960s.

A few years ago the ABC ran a summer series called The Long Slow Summer. One was a trip on the Indian Pacific and they filmed the actual journey.

My in-laws travelled on it from Adelaide to Perth. They cashed in their return ticket and flew back.

We went by train from Brisbane to Barcaldine via Rockhampton about ten years ago. It was a special trip in support of Variety Club and was fun going out there and very interesting. But the return trip two days later was rather tedious.

Undeterred we booked a trip to Fraser Island by train to Maryborough. When we got to Roma Street we were told we’d be going by coach as there was a problem with the train. We did have the option of cancellation and going home but we pressed on. Only to suffer a bus whose AIRCONDITIONING was not working!!! The rest of the holiday was also a disaster: booked room changed to one up a steep hill; illness; very windy weather.

Our relationship with trains is now over.
