Outside court, Stephen Silvagni said his son maintained his innocence and the family was exploring its appeal options.

“Jo and I, together with our family members and friends, are so disappointed with the outcome. We all love and support our son,” Stephen Silvagni said.

“Our son continues to maintain his innocence, and we stand firmly behind him.

“We will be considering our options to appeal and shall not be making any further comments on this case. Our goal is to clear his name and bring him home.”

Isn't it illegal for calls to be recorded without the knowledge/consent of the party being recorded?

If it is illegal, then it could not have been admissible as evidence, and could be grounds for the Silvangi's to sue.

I think the police recorded it - so presumably they would have had the appropriate paperwork filed

It's admirable that he would stand by his son. I find it weird that some parents would seek to distance themselves in a situation like this.

That doesn't mean there wasn't a guilty verdict. It doesn't mean that it didn't happen. They're believing their son, which is what most parents would do. Clearly, you don't have children.

I'm not saying he's innocent, but people are allowed to not believe a guilty verdict.

A guilty verdict doesn't mean he 100% did it, I'm sure many parents would believe their child over a court

He's telling them he didn't do it despite the mountains of evidence and the court's finding of guilty. There are recorded phone calls, doctored uber receipts etc.

That they come out and say "We believe our son over the court, the victim, the evidence and the verdict" is absolute idiocy.

Either don't make a statement, or if you do have to make a statement, don't make one that calls the victim and the court liars.

The first stage of the Kubler-Ross model of grief is denial. Even tho its not a completely accurate scientific model its reasonably accurate and so based on that ... there's a fair chance SoS's response is not a rational or calculated response. You seem to be assuming it is.
