They robbed themselves of a dynasty because McGuire couldn't stand the thought of Nathan Buckley coaching another AFL club. After the Pies won in 2010, it was supposed to be a dynasty, they had one of the youngest premiership lists and ticked most boxes of a strong club, yet that was their only flag.
Collingwood were the dominant team of 2011, but come the latter part of the season, Malthouse had well & truly taken his eye off the ball due to the impending hand over of the coaching position to Buckley as part of McGuire's succession plan. As a result Geelong hammered them in the final home & away match & repeated the dose in the Grand Final. This was a Geelong side which had already started to lose their dominant edge (they haven't won a premiership since) but grabbed their last chance at premiership glory.
Thankfully the Collingwood dynasty didn't happen, but if McGuire hadn't meddled, it most likely would have.
