After the Pies won in 2010, it was supposed to be a dynasty, they had one of the youngest premiership lists and ticked most boxes of a strong club, yet that was their only flag.
They robbed themselves of a dynasty because McGuire couldn't stand the thought of Nathan Buckley coaching another AFL club.

Collingwood were the dominant team of 2011, but come the latter part of the season, Malthouse had well & truly taken his eye off the ball due to the impending hand over of the coaching position to Buckley as part of McGuire's succession plan. As a result Geelong hammered them in the final home & away match & repeated the dose in the Grand Final. This was a Geelong side which had already started to lose their dominant edge (they haven't won a premiership since) but grabbed their last chance at premiership glory.

Thankfully the Collingwood dynasty didn't happen, but if McGuire hadn't meddled, it most likely would have.

would be interesting to poll supporters on whether they would take a single flag if it meant disappearing into the wilderness again straight after.....
Yes,

3 wins through 5 rounds would be a good start along with being well the other games. Richmond Port Swans Suns Bulldogs. 2 minimum, 3 good. I see us hitting the season full of run
I’d say we could possibly beat swans, suns and dogs (we get a 7 day break bs their 5) Port in SA is always tough for us but we’ve taken pretty young inexperienced lists over the last few times. They’re in no mans land at the moment so it’s a maybe. Richmond will be tough but I’d love that. Great start to the year.

If we beat Richmond we could start 5-0. Lol.

You expect us to better our 2018 season tally in the first 5 games?

I think we are spoilt for choice. I remember drafting a Murphy or Gibbs and people getting excited over just one player

We have Walsh Stocker Setterfield Dow O'Brien SPS Fisher Kennedy Charlie etc which most believe at worst will be very good players

That is what a lot of people are missing when they look at this rebuild to the Murphy Gibbs Kreuzer Judd rebuild - last time we ended up with 4 elite talents, this time we have 4 years of multiple first round picks (and some real quality in some of the later picks as well) and so while it may be a longer and slower rebuild the heights and length of the peak will be much greater.

If you look just at our best midfield we have added Setterfield and Walsh (possibly Stocker and Gibbons) should get more games out of Murphy, Kreuzer, Kennedy and Fisher (possibly Cuningham) who all had significant injuries last year and the should get good natural development from Dow, SPS and O'Brien.

If you remove Murphy and Kreuzer and only look at the "speculative" players we only need 2 or 3 of the 7-10 players in the MIDFIELD alone to have break out years and the improvement will be dramatic.

Everyone is getting up and about about the Lions this year but from my clearly biased view point we both have a similar amount of talent in the "natural development" category but I think we have a lot more in the "returning from injury" and "net off season gains" area.

Our midfield is still very reliant on young, inexperienced, unproven players. It’s hard to know how we will do. Once they get some confidence, the improvement will be exponential imo, I’m just not sure how long that will take.
Just this year imo. Once 2019 is done and we have another 15-22 games in our youngsters, id say we will definitely shoot up the ladder extremely quickly.

The talent on our list is unquestionable. Add a FA to our list and trade for another quality player or 2 and our 2020 season looks extremely rosey.

You will hear numerous times this year commentators and the media realizing how much talent we have on our list.

Walsh, Dow, Charlie, McKay, LOB, SPS, Fisher, McGovern, Weitering, Kennedy, Setterfield etc just to name a few.

Cripps is elite. Watch Dow, LOB, SPS all be at least 10% better. Watch Fisher go to the next level. Kennedy will be the player i expect him to be (dominant). Our tall and agile forward 3 will terrorize backlines. Setterfield will find his feet and show glimpses of how good he will be.

We are in the final year before we really turn up the heat. Its exciting

Stocker a very good chance to play early. If you can't kick and your in the side they will look at any excuse to drop you while if you can hit your targets then they will look for any reason to play you. Stocker looks like a third year player to me as well.

If his kicking is as good as they say then he ticks a pretty big box. If his ball handling is good, his aggression and work rate good and his running ability good then he's going to be there abouts for sure.

These practice games are going to be huge.

Stocker is the interesting one. If we get 10-15 games into him and he looks ok, as a club we will be happy. He looks a brute

He certainly has an AFL body already, how is his endurance coming along though? Have heard that it has already improved.
From what I saw he's been doing running, running and more running. I was getting fitter just watching him run lap after lap.

You know that it has nothing to do with diet? Seems like you're just guessing.

Anywho, it was just a joke and I didn't mean anything by it. I would like nothing more than for Jarrod to have some luck with injuries, put in the work on the track and become the player we all know he can become.
I said his injuries have nothing to do with diet..I think thats a pretty reasonable guess. And I went on to say that I think Russell needs to get between his ears not look in his fridge.
And yeah lets hope...shame to see that obvious talent go to waste......:thumbsu:

He's clearly had some issues with self discipline when away from the club environment during the breaks. That's when the penny needs to drop if he's to reap some rewards for hard work and turn his luck around.

The question is therefore why ?...and I am hopeful thats what Russell asks and deals with.

There may be some unfortunate circumstances to have to come about for Stocker to get games this year.
His situation sort of reminds me of Hopper & Kennedy having to break into the GWS side, in that they were primarily mids that had to find another way of getting into the main team by playing other roles in the most.

If Stocker is a front line mid this year, he would either be performing well above expectations, or maybe we just have too many injuries.
Right now, I see too many brute-type mids to be in front of him.

I think and certainly hope you are right. Injuries are a part of footy and there will be times where players are injured or rested and that might open the door. I think versatility is the key for a lot of players.

Things I can see us taking a liking to this season:

Midfielders who perform well statistically. I don't think it will be enough to come into the side and just do a role and negate, I think we will want to be winning some ball.

Good skills. If you fumble and can't hit targets you're gone or half out the door whereas if you're neat your either in or half in at least.

Versatility. If you can play a number of roles then I think that gives the MC good grounds to pick you. I can't remember the last player who played half forward and center and did it reasonably well, I think it may have been Brock McLean. I think if you can play forward and midfield, inside and outside and half back for example and at a good level it's going to be hard to be kept out.

I think if you're a one position player then you're going to have to be pretty good.

I think Stocker will spend some time at half forward and midfield and developed as such but if he comes on early and he just might then I can see him coming in ahead of some who we didn't expect him to be ahead of. But this can be said for a number of players.
