The SCG - fit for purpose?

Concord is still there, and around 15k would be ample for today's super rugby crowd.

Unfortunately 2/3 of them are corporates which Concord can't cater for, and TV times are locked in for the NZ and RSA audiences so moving games is problematic.

I guess the biggest issue is the field orientation. This was only the second time (an A-League derby being the first) where the O'Reilly stand was behind the goals rather than on a wing. I'm not sure those areas of the ground have ever had such loading go through it.

For AFL, NRL and AL there is no issue. For the most part there is no issue for Rugby just the scrums. The ground will be sorted before the first AFL game. Should be fine for Friday Nights NRL game.

Western Sydney Stadium opens in a month and that will help take the load off the SCG in future seasons. Expect to see less Sydney FC and Tahs games at the SCG IMO.

Manuka caters for corporates by simply roping off the top of a stand, and providing food and drinks.

Swans still have to put up with other clubs at the SCG for 3 seasons though.

The Sydney Swans should be particularly concerned about their Round 2 and 6 fixtures where they play just 6-7 days after a Super Rugby match. And in Round 6, there is also an ANZAC Day NRL fixture in between:

March 23 - Super Rugby
March 29 - Swans v Crows

April 20 - Super Rugby
April 25 - Rugby League
April 27 - Swans v Giants

Wow that's ridiculous!

The surface should be fine for the AFL, A-League and the NRL games. But those Super Rugby games are clearly not going to work there.

Thankfully the SCG doesn’t have to have the number of games played there that the MCG or Docklands do and instead has a cute little 26 game schedule.

Was thinking that. Maybe we need another Melbourne stadium

Even Perth and Adelaide do 22 plus games

Yeah it could get quite nasty.

Ideally there shouldn’t be any Waratahs/Sydney FC games at the G (I’ll give Easts a pass as there’s no other realistic home ground). The effect the Tahs game had on the surface looks awful, though.

With the closure of Subiaco, the SCG is now the standout worst regular venue to watch a game.

Let's bear in mind that the redevelopment of the SCG took place with a NSW govt cap of 50,000 seats as they wanted to preserve the status of the former Olympic stadium as the state's premier large capacity arena for round surface games.

Shortly after the redevelopment of the SCG was completed the government complied with a request from the NRL to lock the former Olympic stadium as a rectangular venue and unnecessarily remove the equipment that moved the sides in and out. No rational public explanation has ever been given as to why this was done. it affected cricket, Aussie rules and any potential athletic event.

Sure, some did not like the arena. but the transport is great, the viewing positions better than the SCG, the capacity is very good.

Scg should not even be used for afl because-
1. It's far too small. With new kick in rules players will kick out past the centre of the ground
2. Tv broadcast of any game are far too low so as a viewer you can't tell how close the ball is to the boundary line on the other side to the camera

Maybe this ****ing up will force afl to move games from there in future

The problem is that Sydney's transport is so bad that an extra 30km drive is a massive issue, so someone that usually goes to Allianz Stadium suddenly being forced to go to ANZ or the new Western Sydney Stadium will simply not go.
If that was an issue they wouldnt of booked all the remaining games at Parra once it's opened.

Having lived in Sydney for 10 years - Watch the Number 4 Football Code likely get shunted to other grounds. If the fans on here living in the AFL bubble do not know the number 4 Code do some research and it isnt the 2 Rugby Codes or Soccer Football.
Lol. No.
