Where and when: Adelaide Oval, Saturday, March 23, 4.05pm (ACDT)

Adelaide Forecast
Capture.PNG
Partly cloudy. Winds westerly 15 to 20 km/h tending southwesterly in the late afternoon then becoming light in the evening.

Last time they met: MCG, round 13, 2018: Hawthorn 12.16 (88) beat Adelaide 4.8 (32).
The Hawks blew the game apart in the third quarter, turning a four-point half-time buffer into a comfortable 48-point lead at the final change. James Sicily starred for the Hawks with 24 disposals and three goals, and Tom Mitchell had 40 touches on his way to the Brownlow Medal. It was the fourth-straight loss for the undermanned Crows, who were without Rory Sloane, Rory Laird, Brad Crouch, Tom Lynch and Brodie Smith.

What it means for Adelaide: This is a fresh start for the Crows after a disappointing season in 2018. They've got almost a full list to choose from and are primed for a quick bounce back to premiership contention

What it means for Hawthorn: It's a difficult first-up assignment without Tom Mitchell – likely to miss the season with a broken leg – star recruits Chad Wingard and Tom Scully, and veteran Grant Birchall.

How Adelaide wins: The Crows will be looking to transition the ball quickly out of defence, spread hard from contests and give their forwards plenty of quality ball inside the attacking 50.

How Hawthorn wins: The midfield battle will be crucial. Jaeger O'Meara, Liam Shiels, James Worpel and James Cousins at least need to break even with Rory Sloane, Matt and Brad Crouch and Bryce Gibbs to give their forwards enough opportunities and deny Adelaide's star-studded attack the chance to run riot.

The stat: The Hawks have a sensational recent record against the Crows, winning nine of their past 10 encounters. Adelaide Oval doesn't hold any fears for the Hawks, who have won all three games against the Crows at the venue.

The match-up: Daniel Talia v Jarryd Roughead
These two experienced bookends have had plenty of battles over the years. According to the Schick AFL Player Ratings, Talia is ranked No. 6 among key defenders in the competition while Roughead, fresh off booting five goals in the JLT Community Series game against Richmond, is the seventh-best key forward in the League.

It's a big week for: Brad Crouch
The Crows midfielder will be looking to make up for lost time after he missed all of last season with a groin injury. Crouch was outstanding during the JLT Community Series with his ability to play inside and outside the contest.

Big call: Josh Jenkins to make an early push for the Coleman Medal by booting six goals.

Prediction: Adelaide by 25 points

Absolutely pumped for this game. Crows expected for big things in season 2019 with players coming back from injury, and the mighty fighting Hawks who always do just that. Fight. A very dangerous side are Hawthorn and made the top 4 last season after many wrote them off. A hard task playing at Adelaide Oval away to a boisterous South Australian Crowd, but I feel the Hawkers will be up for the challenge and if they can withstand the early storm will be right in it up to their eye balls. Their forward line is as good as any, once they're fully fit will take many big scalps throughout the year. Anything can happen in this one. Get blown out, or win the game in true Hawthorn fashion displaying guts and determination, backs against the wall. Perhaps a narrow 13 point loss and a gritty performance is more likely, who knows. One thing I do know is when they get all their players back on the park firing on all cylinders, they're going to be a scary beast to contend with.

At the significant risk of being banned by the Carlton/Hawthorn moderating team I'm going to suggest the Crows will win.

Wait I'm allowed to ban you for saying that?

This opens up a few options for me......

Anticipating a resurgent Crows this year and a potential long season for us. If we get within 4 goals i'll be be pretty happy. Not expecting a win so if we pull it off it will be be one happy Saturday night!

Mostly excited to watch us run out in the new strip!

Appreciate the balanced write up.

Of course I hope we win but I just think your gun mids will be a cut above against our relatively new group. Expecting big things from O'Meara though.

Just a little trivia: we’ve beaten them 9 times the last time we’ve played them, including 3-0 at AO.

Means nothing today though.

I would say it means something. To us at least. I'm sure we would like to get the season under way by breaking that streak.

this jumper clash is bad. How does this still happen in the year 2019? Cmon AFL sort it out.
