I think the frustration from many of us with Guthrie is that we know that he is capable of actually playing very good footy. He does have some very good matches. But they unfortunately are far too infrequent. And then you question why are they infrequent? He has a naturally laconic nature that can possibly be misinterpreted as being lazy but it’s his actions out on the field that provoke criticism. As Cataholic has said, too often he avoids contact or lays a feeble tackle that is broken or makes a dreadful skill error or poor decision. Maybe he’s just not that good? Or maybe he could actually be better if he applied himself or concentrated better for longer periods? I don’t know the answer.

All I know is that on his form of the past couple of years he shouldn’t be an automatic selection. He doesn’t deserve that status.

He is an automatic inclusion for mine.

His kicking skills aren’t great but if our selections are based off elite kickers we would have hardly a single best 22 lock in our side. We aren’t known for elite kickers.

What he does bring is very good skills around a contest and congestion. His ability to break lines and to break free from a contested situation are very good.

Quite often he has done this in pivotal moments of matches that not many others on our side will or can do.

I think he is foremost a midfielder being played as a defender out of necessity. But you need to do what’s best for the team balance

I reckon that the Dees will bring Preuss in with Gawn to avoid what happened on Saturday...Rhys and Sav will have a big task ahead of them!

I hope they do actually. Melbourne were destroyed by Port's spread on Saturday and bringing in Preuss will mean they have one more plodder on their list.

I'm sure each of Danger, Duncan, Selwood, Menegola and Kelly got some criticism last year.

You don't seem to understand scale at all.

Comparing Guthrie to those you've mentioned here is ridiculous. They're all consistently high performers, Guthrie is consistently average at best, below average at times.

I'm bamboozled by the call for Guthries return. We lost the elimination final by a truckload. We started with a new team that did Collingwood and should reward that team. The kids brought passion I hadn't seen from Cam for 4 years. Keep the passion rolling g I say. If any changes, Narkle BOG on the weekend. Consider him alone.

They will not be the same side this week. In fact I'd expect to see the one that gave us a hiding in the finals (in terms of mentality and intensity).

Winning at KP is always difficult but they will be red hot this week, surely. After the pre-season hype they will not want to start 0-2. Geelong will need to be sharp.

I'm bamboozled by the Guthrie melts, when he hasn't even been selected yet.

We know he is a ‘different cat’ from some of the stories. Perhaps he just doesn’t live for his footy enough to take those extra steps/hits etc
All the more reason not to pick him automatically. Probably reason not to give him a long contract either (too late for the latter)

The task will be hard this week for Stanley ..after beating Gawn last time then this..

Targeted Max Gawn "failed the test" on Saturday: Lyon

Port Adelaide made it their mission on Saturday afternoon to slam into Melbourne star ruckman Max Gawn and it clearly rocked the All-Australian ruckman.

Gawn played poorly in the Demons’ surprise loss to the Power and former club captain Garry Lyon believes the ruckman “failed” this particular test.

Former St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt praised Port Adelaide for going after him.

Christopher Scott must be killing himself laughing.

Would play 2 rucks to make sure we're winning and making the most of center bounces and stoppages.
We can't expect RS to go 4 quarters by himself as fast paced as the game is then blame him not being everywhere when we lose.
Last week proved the importance and value of a ruck who can rove.
I'd play Abbott or Fort as secondaries and leave Sav fwd where he should be to support Hawkins and learn forward craft.

Nobody is suggesting he is anywhere near those players. Just that his best footy puts him comfortably into our 22.
And at 26, he is not a write off.

In the Mix

Quinton Narkle (28 disposals, one goal)
Narkle put his hand up for an AFL return with a four-quarter effort in the Cats’ VFL practice match win against Collingwood on Friday. The 21-year-old collected 28 disposals and kicked a goal to be named best afield.

Jordan Cunico (31 disposals)
Cunico had the ball on a string in the Cats VFL hit-out, finishing with a game-high 31 disposals. Was named as an AFL emergency on Friday night and could come into contention to play the Dees on Saturday.

Lachie Henderson (16 disposals, eight marks)
Viewed by many as extremely unlucky to miss out on AFL selection. Henderson was amongst the Cats best in the VFL with 16 touches and eight marks.
The key defender was prolific down back but may find it hard to break into an AFL back six which restricted Collingwood to just 65 points.

Zach Tuohy
An attacking weapon off half-back, Zac Tuohy’s remarkable streak of 138 AFL games came to an end after he missed the Cats round one win.
Last time the Cats played the Dees in Geelong he was the hero, kicking a match winning goal after the siren. If he can prove his fitness on the track, he is likely to return this week.

Cameron Guthrie
Missed the Cats round one win and will be firmly in the selection mix for a recall this week. His ability to rotate through defence and the engine room could be crucial against a strong Melbourne on-ball brigade.

Ryan Abbott
Was named as an emergency in round one. Could come into consideration to face the Dees if the coaching group feel Stanley could do with some additional support in the ruck against Max Gawn.

Darcy Fort (16 disposals, three goals)
Since having his name read out with the 65th selection in the 2018 draft, Fort has made a strong impression. He was a standout for the Cats on Friday, kicking a team-high three goals to go with 16 disposals in an encouraging display.

James Parsons
Named an emergency in round one. Parsons hasn’t missed a beat throughout the pre-season and will be looking to add to his career tally of 31 games this week.

Tuohy plays if fit, no question.

Who do you think should go out?? I thought the forward pressure with Atkins, Miers and Rohan was the best I've seen from us in a long long time, and a massive reason we won the game.
Do you think Guthrie should come in for one of those 3?
Do you think he can provide better pressure?
Or maybe Clark or O'Connor??
Do you think he can provide better foot skills or defending?
If he is fit and rearing to go he should come in. He plays in defense or midfield. Whose spot? Good question. The most likely would be O'Connor who I thought played well and is showing that he could become a very good player. It would be really bad luck for the Irishman though. I don't mind a no-change arrangement either.

Won't be o'connor. Miers or Atkins or possibly Kolo depending on match ups but problems not. Whoever it is they're gunna be stiff but thats a good thing.

Most likely they will rotate the young guys in and out of the side through the year- they probably don't have the tank for a consistent run at it. So Atkins, Miers, Constable, Clark could all get shuffled at any point. But I hope we don't change the side this week.

Could Fort place CHF instead of SavRat?

Probably too early to consider moving SavRat to the VFL at this stage.
