I would argue that the commentary for that game (and this one too) being flat is due to the blowout score, its pretty hard to feign excitement and interest when one team is simply destroying the other.

Agree with this. I think the commentators are developing a soft spot for this new look Cats lineup.

The Brayshaw on Rohan hit though...I'm not saying there was any malice in it or that I want to see him rubbed out, but it's pretty rare that you see a clear shoulder to head hit, the player who's been hit in the head being taken from the ground to be assessed and the MRP not even being mentioned.

It gives an indication of where the ball lived most of the game however. And more importantly, it indicates what both sides were able to do with it when they were going forward. You guys were far far better going forward, especially when the ball hit the deck inside 50.
No it doesn't. Heat maps do. Here is why it makes sense:

Melbourne couldn't actually get it past their half forward line. The ball was getting thrown backwards and forwards over the i50, but never deep (see Geelong by comparison).

It says nothing about where the ball spent most of the time during the game. Given the possession number differential, it would be misleading anyway - it means nothing that the ball is in your forward half if you don't have it in your hands.

Bad night? They lost to Port by 26 points last week.

Just shows that you have no idea about footy. They are Bottom 8 this year in my opinion.
I'm sure you are an expert. But I doubt many will have Melbourne missing the eight. Slow starts affect teams that play in finals. I doubt you can remember Carlton having that problem?

Didn’t see that move by Hawkins as a smart arse move. Was kinda nice for the kid to get the reward for his effort

Hawkins is unselfish to a fault sometimes and in some instances I think you have to be careful with that sort of stuff where it can come across as rubbing your opponent's nose in it. But to set a kid up for his first AFL goal, when he was gifting you one in the first place, good stuff, I reckon.

If he'd been handing it off to Ablett or Dangerfield, yeah that would have been uncalled for.

If it was a "peahearted" effort thing, that would actually be easier to explain. Instead, we actually had 25 more inside 50s and had more than enough ball to make an impact, but Geelong looked way more dangerous. Our lack of class is actually damning.
Yeah, not pea hearted. Oliver, Jones and Brayshaw had great games, really. Gawn was good too. But your turnovers killed you, and you look underdone, skillwise and on the rebound effort. May was a classic example, and was at 50% - at best.

That should improve, as the bodies get match fit.

Will Simon goodgear be complaining in the media again this week about rough housing tactic?
Yes 18 Melbourne players got their anuses handed to them

Yeah that was fairly disrespectful, wouldn't encourage, but Clark did basically create the goal.

Meh if we found it so disrespectful we could have tackled him. He completely took the piss but who cares? If no one wants to tackle you then do a ****ing handstand for all I care

Our last 5 games against the Cats we have won the inside 50 count by 25, 16, 13, 23 and 12 and yet they have beaten us 4 out of he 5 times.
I think the cats have figured us out completely, they play super deep against us and let us kick the ball long into our forward line. We have the worst small forwards in the competition and they pose no threat against Geelong at all.
The majority of the game after quarter time was played in our half yet there was hardly a single moment we looked in control or more likely to score.

They just continue to soak up our useless dump kicks until they counter and our midfield is lazy, they kicked 20 goals from 48 inside 50s. We kicked 6 from 73

Supporters can troll all they want but Geelong arent 80 points better than us, they thoroughly outplayed us tonight though an we didnt adjust at all to the game.

17 times last year a team had 60 inside 50s and lost, Melbourne did it 5 times including a season high 69 against port. We have already chalked up our first of the season.

Melbourne arent shit, you cant have 73 inside 50s if your midfield doesnt get the ball, its 10 short of the all time record for **** sake. However I cant remember a much more clinical an easy loss against Geelong... No wait yes I can.

We will improve as the season goes, whether its enough to make finals now I dunno

Hang on- that song was on J selwood's player playlist?:drunk:

To me, this is perhaps the most important question of the match and this thread.

I'd like to think J. Selwood had either one of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Proud Mary' or 'Green River' on his 'Player Playlist'.

However, I fear it may have been more along the lines of Creed, Smashmouth or y'know, Hilltop Hoods.

Maybe I don't really wanna know..

I don't think that is a Melbourne specific tactic, that's just how we've set up since errr 2003 when Scarlett and Harley really broke out as defenders.

Probably right, it's super effective against us. Sad thing is we make no adjustments. We should have played keepings off for a while by foot

Hawkins has been accused - often unfairly - of a lot of things during his career, but being selfish has never been one of them.

If anything, he's probably too unselfish. How often does he take a mark within 40m of goal and his first thought is to see if there's someone to pass to before he goes back to take his kick?

MmmmMMMMmmmm yum.

Wouldn't be a Geelong game day thread without Hawks supporters complaining about the umpiring.

It used to be that you weren't allowed to touch Gary Ablett

Now you're not even allowed to look at him

One day you’ll say something that isn’t complete nonsense. Toxic cancer to this site.

Demolition by the Catters. Playing marvellous football the first two weeks.

Good to see.

I like that you finished this post with the first line of Live Forever by oasis

For better or worse, watching Hawkins for 12+ years, it's safe to say he would have done the same thing if it was the first minute of the game. At least when you're 12-15 goals up in time on of the fourth there's not much risk if it comes unstuck.
