Autopsy Hawks defeated by Cats

I don't know what that means. I have tried to reverse engineer the post but it seems you have simply typed four asterisks.

And I'm pretty sure I'm not. So you picked this for your 18th post. Good choice.

So I’ve read dozens and dozens of posts from people singling out Mirra and Nash, why aren’t you calling these people out? Further to that didn’t you say that Lewis isn’t the answer yet?

Would like to know your opinion on all 3 of those players?

A jab in the hand/wrist makes ball handling pretty difficult. As does it make tackling and hanging on.
Give Issac a bloody break.
Should’ve gone off and would’ve had injuries not have been mounting last week but ran it out and provided a rotation and run. That itself nearly got us over the line. Being 3 down for near a half would’ve made it impossible.

Maybe not the right call to play today but FFS settle down. We lost Mitch, Shiels, Burgs, Stratts, Chip... they rolled the dice. Jabbed him up & he couldn’t perform.
But I reckon he’s got some credit in the bank.
He’s carried another injury for weeks as has Bruest. Gunston had a severely hampered end to his preseason. Obviously Chad and Sculls are still finding their way.
Huge effort today to not roll over. Don’t undervalue just how much fight the side showed today.

Agree to an extent, Izzy has the runs on the board and his performance is the least of our problems.. kudos to him fighting through and playing.

Also think it was a huge effort, I loved the way we played today, we really took the game on and the only thing that stopped was from rolling them was a lack of available talent. I hope Clarko continues to allow the players to attack games of footy, I genuinely enjoyed the match.

Punky and Gunno very disappointing for mine, both leaders, both had no impact.

Red time goals destroyed us yesterday. Are we not fit enough to run out quarters?
We deserved a 2 goal lead at quarter time but the over celebrator Rohan pops up.

A lot to like though I thought, Geelong were practically full strength.

Lewis, please persist.

Worpel, 10 year gun mid at pick 45, great drafting

Brand, needs to be backed in and stay when Frawley returns

Sicily, elite

Scrimshaw, will be a good solid player for a long time.

The way I look at it, we aren’t a flag contender this year, we don’t bat deep enough, but this year will be the season we look back on as important when we are contending for flags in 2020-2023 time.

Throw Mitchell and hopefully Coniglio into that midfield and it’s as tough and good as any in the game, hopefully we can hold onto a top 10 pick and grab a young gun Jaidyn Stephenson style who can contribute from round 1 next year and I’m all for getting Patton if we can get his knees right.
Scully and Wingard will be learning our system much of this year and will be better next year if they can stay injury free

We may and will likely have a down year this year but you can’t be top 4 every year, competitive losses and the odd win from nowhere will be our season I reckon.

I agree but if was Sicily doing the action I reckon it would not only be a free kick but given one week which is why I continue to bag on about the inconsistency of some decisions.

On another note before I stop boozing and my compulsive rants. Did anyone see Footy Classifieds tonight?

I used to hate Lloyd at Essendon but he is quite articulate and took note of an interesting theory in kicking with Port and moving the ball forward. That is low, almost like long, grubber kicks into the forward line rather than floating high kicks getting picked off by the opposition backs. I think Worpell did a low torp out of the center that resulted in a goal yesterday.

It sounds ridiculous but the amount of times the ball is marked and intercepted by the opposition could this be a tactic rather than bombing the ball high?

Giving small quick forwards to at least contest at ground level and in keeping the ball in our forward 50?

It certainly takes away the big mark but it is a beauty in some ways. The opposition can't mark and intercept but almost guarantees a ball up at worst, keeping the ball in the attacking zone.

It completely takes way the Rance, McGoverns etc out of the contest and the fleas to pounce IF we haven't got that big gun marking forward which as I can see is only McEvoy in patches.

Anyway, just a thought but I mean well directed grubbers to the advantage of the fleas.

And yes I am going insane..
We invented the grubber kick a few years ago. Sam Mitchell used it regularly. We have stopped doing it.

You have to admit that Smith and Stratton were both playing below average even before their injuries. If Smith, Stratton, Breust and Gunston of 2018 can return to form then we would be so much better overall. Those are the four senior players that need to lift.
Agree on Stratton’s form but we really missed just his presence and organisation down back yesterday .
If he plays Rohan most likely doesn’t get off the leash .

Lots of people frustrated with the red time goals against us and fading in 1/4s

I was at the game yesterday and to me it looked like a few factors contributing to it . Around the 20minute mark of each 1/4 you could see our structure gradually at times come a little apart.
I put it down
- fatigue due to young players carrying a large load and major roles in the side eg Worpel , Cousins
- new players learning our system eg Scully , Wingard etc

The guys are fit as they can be . The good news is before that ‘wall’ we generally are controlling games or like yesterday matching it with a strong opposition . It will come together it’s just going to take some time .

Just dont get clarkos seeming dislike of Brand.

He was good yesterday and for me has always shown enough potential to justify a future. Good size, good kick and a natural defender.

He's the type we'd delist, get picked up by another club, and turn into a very good defender. He's a keeper for mine, and played a very good game yesterday.

My concern is Scully, in terms of how we're playing him. I don't want to see him forward this week. He needs a full game on the wing, slicing through the middle and delivering the ball I50. We can't be wasting Ferrari's out of position, in the predicament we're currently in.

We need more out of Omera to, he has to be more than just a scragging tough midfielder, he needs to be an elite ball winner and our class. By the end of the season I think Worpel could go past him, not a bad thing but I think there’s a lot to come from Worps.
A sad reality is that 12 game 20 year old is better than a bloke on a 4 year 800k contract

maybe Scully was sore. Played 3 hard games and the harder surface of Etihad mightve been why they rested him forward

I have always been a fan, last year I had him in my starting side ahead of Chip.. KB did wear my patients thin at times last year, I was starting to doubt myself but yesterday he showed why I have always rated him highly. Is it just me or does he look a lot stronger and bigger, he looks solid through his hips/quads and glutes, looks at home now.

He really seems like a confidence guy, he needs consecutive weeks in the team. He has the size to make it he just needs to know he belongs at AFL level. He has come a long way over the past 12 months in my opinion, it was the Easter Monday game that i had almost written him off. He panicked, grappled, held and scragged in a lot of contests that day and it almost cost us the game but as the season went on he looked to be taking massive strides forward. Happy to see him given an opportunity and take it and if Frawley can maintain the level he started the season at when he returns i will be very happy with our KPD stocks for the next season or two while we look to replace Frawley.

If. . . . . Brand stays in when Frawley comes back

Then. . . . . It's tempting to move Sis forward

Do you want a marking forward that can kick long?

No. He doesn't get moved from the backline. How about we play our best forward - Gunston - in the forward line.

Have you ever said anything positive... He isn't better than Jaeger at the moment, some people seem to have already forgotten that his last game before yesterday was a 32 disposals 10 clearances and 12 tackles game that lead out depleted midfield to a win. I totally agree that in an ideal world we would be able to use him more outside and let him break away from packs and use his talents elsewhere but massive credit to him for stepping up and leading this midfield so far this year.

If anything it is a blessing we have him on that contract because if we didn't we would be on track for the spoon this year.

What is the obsession with moving Sicily forward? I know we need a marking target but he is legit in AA form again down back and is a superstar defender, he has not shown he can play at this level forward. Keep him as a defender and only throw him forward as a last resort type thing late in a game if we need a spark.

Ppl under value this team a lot. They love to pick out individuals and go hard. I look around the league and there are far more talented teams out there on paper that arent performing anywhere near what our output is given our list. Our players are warriors on the field. They keep fighting i am so proud to support this club

I generally agree with your posts but there are players who aren’t up to the level, with injuries we are forced to an extent to play these guys but hopefully as time goes by we can get something more that resembles our best side on the park.

The positive from yesterday was a lot of his bad habits (spoken of well in another post) were not evident yesterday, especially the teddy bear arms around the opposing forward. He attacked the ball with purpose and didn't appear to second guess himself.
If you want to be critical his only blunder was the kick off the ground that went to Kelly for a goal. This was a panicked reaction after the smother of a Sicily kick.
All in all he should remain in the side until years end.

Personally it isn't queue in the rack time but player development needs a strong consideration.

I've always thought kicking to no one / chaos ball / low kick etc is better than kicking high into the forward line if the opposition backline is marking too much

We've seen the McGovern - Sheed passage of play so many times in the Grand Final. Haven't heard any of the experts question why Treloar kicked the ball high into the forward line to the contest - Collingwood didn't need to kick a goal - the worst result possible was a mark to McGovern. Boundary throw in would have been superb

Didn’t see the game. Only scores every now and then. Disappointing we didn’t win. With the personnel out, against a strong Geelong side, proud of the guys that it wasn’t a blow out

Stark contrast to Easter Monday last year. Remember the 18-man press that day? We didn't give them an inch, and we tackled with a lot more intent as well.

Yesterday we suffered the indignity of one passage of play where the cats went from defensive 50 to a scoring position by means of 4 uncontested marks in a row.

I'm looking for a lift out of Morrison and Impey. Clarko said early last year they were A-grade material. They've been well down on that the last few weeks. 4-quarter performances from 22 players is our mission next week.

That passage of play looked like the last minute of the 2018 Grand Final, but with less pressure delivered. Was poor.

So many turn overs during the match.

Live and learn.

Go Hawks!

A few people on Mirra's case....

Let me put this to you. Put yourself in Mirra's shoes as a defender and if you have ever actually played the game you will be able to relate.
Imagine, just imagine, if 80% of the time the oppo are able to just walk out of a centre clearance/stoppage, with no pressure, what do you think would be going through a defenders mind?

IF the ball comes into a oppo's forward line with absolute ease, then I don't care who you are, you are up sh!t creek as a defender.
Yep Mirra makes a few blues, but in no way is he our worst.

Maybe the likes of
Bruest, who shirks every issue in big games
Smith, who is drinking his own bath water at the moment
Gunston, who has not fired a shot yet

Maybe they should be in the gun? And yes, Nash has to go..... He has NO influence in a game, none, nothing!

Thank God for Big boy, Worp and Hendo. Without them we would be 0 - 5 and yesterday would have lost by 20 goals!

Not too bad. Think Bruest, Smith and Gunston have had their games, this year, but have overall not been up to their usual standard.

You're going to find that people love a scapegoat and rarely go after the established names. Some also love to shoot down as many as they came and then scream how correct they were when one of their hatchet jobs comes off.

Personally i think Mirra is only plugging a hole, whilst Clarko shuffles pieces to find the correct mix. He is a very serviceable player and does a decent job. Always need players like him on the list.

Go Hawks!
