I think people view those who make a conscious choice to not eat something differently than those who don’t eat certain food because they were born into something.

While I don’t believe those who are in prison should be fussy eaters, I do find it funny how we value different beliefs in society.

I’m in no way a vegan, or religious at all. But I do believe in stories. Everybody has stories that they belief and use as guidance in life. That’s really all a religion or a belief (including what to eat and why) is, stories or alternate versions of “truth”.

Religion is like big business in this sense (and many others). If you have a belief that’s been forced on you by an institution it is of greater significance and holds more weight than a conscious decision... weird.

Certainly a good way to keep folks in line. [emoji6]

Hey, I went to a farm stay just last year. Real authentic like.

But it’s not really the issue. One doesn’t have to have been a farmer to recognise problems in the food industry anymore than one has to have been a jockey to recognise problems in the horse racing industry.

In my experience an example would be Muslim prisoners getting halal certified food and during Ramandan having access to a microwave and getting a large food pack to reheat after hours.

The were either allowed the microwave in their cells or staff would go to their units after hours to let them out of their cells to use the communal unit microwaves.

Aboriginal prisoners having numerous days per year when bush tucker was prepared and eaten. They were the only ones allowed to eat it.

Prisons in Victorian cater for all sorts, I'd imagine that in the end they'll have to cater specifically for vegans somehow.

I couldnt find any more info on that study, do you know what qualifies as "almost vegetarian"?
I would say I am in that camp as around 70% of my daily calories are from non-animal sources. I firmly believe in a balanced diet and it sounds like more vegetables are being eaten which is awesome.
As a child of the 90's I rememeber the standard school lunches and dinners everyone had and vegetables and fruit were pretty much "uncool".

I have zero tolerance for anyone that feels self righteous enough to directly protest against other peoples life choices. Protest a political decison or political party but step off from the common person.
I prefer to keep my nose out of others people business, I wish more people would shut up and do the same, regardless of how "moral" or "right" they feel they are.

The problem is, political decisions and personal decisions are often interlinked. Or would you be happy with someone refusing to serve a black person because it’s their personal choice to believe they are inferior? Vegans believe they are acting in the interests of animals, given humans’ abhorrent treatment of animals in the past, it’s obvious that there is some need for people to protect them from other people that may want to harm them (ivory trade, for example). It’s not just black or white.
