Amazing coincidences in football

Despite looking like this would change at one stage this year, Port and Dogs have still never played finals in the same season.
I can't believe no one has picked up on this error.

They both played finals in 1999.

Every leap year since 2000, the team on top of the ladder has gone on to win the flag.

Let's change this from "leap year" to Olympics year.

Sorry, Port Adelaide.

Also another one I picked up on Liam Picken

His 198th and final game was against Hawthorn in Round 23, 2017

The 2018 pre-season game where he suffered the concussion that finished his career was against Hawthorn

He finally announced his retirement the day after Round 2, 2019, the round in which the Dogs knocked off... Hawthorn

In Round 17 1979, Fitzroy kicked a league record score of 36.22-238 in crushing Melbourne 6.12-48 by 190-points. Playing for the Lions that day is Robert Walls, while Greg Wells was in the beaten Demons' team.

Thirteen years later in Round 7 1992 Geelong break the record score with 37.17-239 in a 164-point win over the Brisbane Bears 11.9-75 at Carrara. Robert Walls is coach of the Brisbane Bears, and Greg Wells is an assistant coach/runner for the Geelong Cats.
That's true, but the Greg Wells that played for Melbourne in 1979 isn't the same Greg Wells that was at Geelong in 1992. The Melbourne Wells was born in 1950 and came from Bentleigh. The Geelong Wells was born in 1952 and came from Geelong Ammo's. I think he's the brother of Stephen Wells, the Geelong recruiting guru. Coincidence that there were two Greg Wells.

Wow, I always thought that this Greg Wells who was an assistant coach at Geelong in the 1990s was the former Melbourne player. That's one of my favorite pieces of football trivia now debunked.

As you said, it is quite remarkable that there were two players named Greg Wells involved in senior football in Victoria born within two years of each other. Greg and Wells aren't rare names - its not like in the 2000s there was another Llane Spaanderman who played AFL for the Adelaide Crows and SANFL team Sturt in South Australia who was completely unrelated to the Llane Spaanderman who played for the Brisbane Lions and WAFL team Swan Districts - but still Greg Wells isn't exactly a name you hear every day either.

Jack Billings of St Kilda had the 'fairest' start to his career that you could imagine. Meaning it took him until his 28th career game to register a free kick against. In that time he managed to earn 28 free kicks for but didn't give away one. Fairly impressive record if you think about it - not one HTB against, not one tackle deemed to have slipped high, not one hold at a stoppage, not one interference in a marking contest, for a 27 game period.

In 1967 Richmond wins the premiership after a long premiership drought and follows it up by winning the flag again in 1969, in 1970 the Kansas City Cheifs win the Super Bowl in the NFL

There have been 10 AFL players to play their last game on the alternate month/day of their debut. The player with the most amount of games is Brian Taylor with 140 matches.

Melbourne's score in 1915: 12.10-82

Ben Newton kicking a behind in the dying minutes cost us an all-time coincidence

While the margin of 120-points has been achieved in a number of games, only two AFL/VFL games have seen a result of an even 20 goals. The first was Footscray vs. Melbourne in Round 15 1985, the Bulldogs thrashing the Demons 26.13-169 to 6.13-49 at the Western Oval. The second was a game at Moorabbin in Round 23 1991, in which St. Kilda demolished the Brisbane Bears 27.12-174 to 7.12-54. Both games were somewhat similar in the way they played out; the Bulldogs led the Demons by 29-points and the Saints led the Bears by 28-points at half time in pretty well contested matches, before both Footscray and St. Kilda kicked 17 goals to 2 in the second half to crush their opponents by 120-points.

In the 1985 match, Michael McLean played for Footscray, while in the beaten Melbourne team was Stephen Newport. Fast forward six years and their roles are reversed in Round 23, with McLean playing for the Brisbane Bears and Newport for the Saints. Brad Hardie, a Bulldogs player in 1985 and who played in the match against Melbourne was also playing for Brisbane in 1991, but he was not part of the Round 23 game against St Kilda.

Geelong, Adelaide & the West Coast Eagles have all won and lost matches by the margin of 135-points.

Geelong were thrashed by Hawthorn by 135-points in 1986, but beat West Coast by this same margin at Subiaco Oval in 2008 (the game in which Cats coach Mark Thompson casually ate a sandwich in the coaches box).

The 135-point drubbing by the Cats is the Eagles worst loss at home, but West Coast had won a game against the Adelaide Crows at Subiaco Oval by 135-points in Round 19 1995.

While the 135-point hiding from the Eagles is one of the Crows' biggest losses of all time, Adelaide scored one of their biggest wins in club history at the Sydney Showground in Round 7 2013 with a 135-point demolition of the hapless GWS Giants.

So to complete this cycle, GWS need to beat Hawthorn by 135 points.

Hawthorn's largest-ever win is against Port Adelaide (165 points, Round 21 2011)

Port Adelaide's largest-ever win is against Hawthorn (117 points, Round 13 2005)

In mid 2005, Port Adelaide had their biggest win and biggest loss in the competition to date within three weeks - both by 117-points. Three weeks before the Power defeated the Hawks by 117-points in Adelaide, they had played West Coast at Subiaco in Round 10, with Port Adelaide leaving Perth with a 117-point thrashing from the Eagles.

Further adding to the coincidences, Port's biggest winning margin to that stage was by 112-points over the West Coast Eagles in a match played at Football Park in the final round of 2001.

Here's another 117 coincidence

In the 32 games played at York Park in the 2000s, the highest score by a team was 117 points, which occurred two occasions

Round 10, 2002, and Round 8, 2008 - Both games involved Hawthorn and Port Adelaide
