1994 - WCE wins flag and defeats Collingwood in the first round of the finals, Melbourne in the Prelim.
1995 - Lose to eventual Premier in the 2nd last home and away round by one point. Go out in the semi finals at the MCG

2018 - WCE wins flag and defeats Collingwood in the first round of the finals, Melbourne in the Prelim.
2019 - Lose to eventual Premier in the 2nd last home and away round by one goal. Go out in the semi finals at the MCG

Both Victorian Premiers were on a winning streak when they faced the Eagles and would finish the season going undefeated for many games ( Blues won 16 straight or so and Richmond 12 ) and both semis were against Victorian sides.

The Eagles as reigning Premiers in 1993 lost by a goal to North and a point to Carlton
In 95 lost by a point to Carlton again
In 2007 lost by a point to Essendon
In 2019 like in 1993 also had defeats by a goal and a point ( To the Pies by a point, Richmond by a goal, both Victorian opp like in 93 )

Already did the 2007 similarities

Geelong topping ladder
Surprise Interstate side finishing 2nd
Eagles 15-7 record
botching their last game etc

1973:
Richmond win the VFL flag
Richmond's reserves win the VFL reserves flag
Glenelg win SANFL flag
Subiaco win WAFL flag
US President in impeachment trouble

2019:
Richmond win the AFL flag
Richmond's reserves win the VFL flag
Glenelg win SANFL flag
Subiaco win WAFL flag
US President in impeachment trouble

In the VFL on June 14, 1980, Footscray, also known as the Bulldogs, had their first win for the season when they defeated Fitzroy by 44 points: 25.17 (167) to 18.15 (123).
In the NWFU on June 14, 1980, Cooee, also known as the Bulldogs, had their first win for the season when they defeated Devonport by 44 points: 19.19 (133) to 12.17 (89).

1979 Collingwood lose GF by 5 pts
1980:
Richmond finishes 3rd on ladder, winning 16 games in the premiership season
Faces Collingwood (5th) in the Grand Final, loses by 80+ points
After an even first quarter, Tigers let loose

2018 Collingwood lose GF by 5 pts
2019:
Richmond finishes 3rd on ladder, winning 16 games in the premiership season
Faces GWS (6th) in the Grand Final, loses by 80+ points
After an even first quarter, Tigers let loose

Not a coincidence but still pretty amazing.

At the end of 1964, Melbourne had 12 premierships and Hawthorn had 1. Fast forward to 2015 and Hawthorn have overtaken Melbourne.

1964 - Melbourne are Kings of the VFL - THE dominant team (winning 6 of the last 10 flags) - only team to play regularly at the premier ground in the comp.
1964 - Richmond are utter carp. Have not played finals in 17 years (or even looked like it). Scored 0.8 in a game in 1961 - still the last goal-less score in VFL/AFL history. Play at poky little suburban ground.

1965 - Richmond commence playing home games at MCG.

1965-onwards. Melbourne miss finals for next 23 years - the two GFs they do make after 1964, they lose by 96 and 60 points. . Richmond go on to win 7 flags in that time.
Since 1965, Richmond have only made the finals 18 times - which is not that great. Melbourne have made the finals only 13 times. 2018 is the ONLY time both sides made finals since 1965.

It's either a stunning coincidence - or there IS such a thing as mojo - Melbourne had it, and Richmond stole it.

(Interestingly, Melbourne lost use of the MCG during WWII from 1942-1945. They played their home games at Punt Rd. Despite winning 3 straight premierships from 1939-1941 and being clearly the dominant team, Melbourne went 8th, 7th, 8th and 9th in the next 4 seasons. They lost 8 consecutive games to Richmond at Punt Rd in that time. As soon as they started playing home games back at the MCG (mid-1946), they finished 4th, and went on to win the flag again in 1948.)

2018 was the first time since 1941 that both Richmond and Melbourne made the same finals series remarkably.

Looking like Richmond might have taken Hawthorn's mojo now (the curse of Tyrone Vickery perhaps?). Richmond are winning multiple flags and Hawthorn have just finished 9th.

And they only played finals against each other for the first time last year I believe.

I think we have a winner here !!

Amazing coincidence between two Footscray legends:

Of course, the 1970 Grand Final saw Carlton trail Collingwood by 44 points at half time, with Carlton eventually coming back to win by 10 points, with the final scores being 17.9 (111) to 14.17 (101).

Carlton defeat South Melbourne in the Grand Final in the first year of WW1 in 1914 and the Blues again defeat the Swans in the GF in the last year of WW2 in 1945.

Collingwood lose the GF to the Swans in the last year of WW1 (1918) and are beaten by Melbourne in the 1939 GF when WW2 commences.

Essendon win the premiership in 1912 when the Titanic sinks, and win it again 73 years later in 1985 when the wreck is found in the North Atlantic.

Hawthorn Hawks win the premiership in the year Bob Hawke comes to power in 1983 and also win it in 1991 when he leaves office.

Melbourne like leap years, winning flags in 1900, 1940, 1948, 1956, 1960 and 1964.

North Melbourne (appropriately given their colors) win the 1975 premiership (Labour Whitlam Government dismissed, Liberal Fraser Government takes power), the 1977 flag (Fraser government win election) and again in 1996 when Liberal John Howard defeats the incumbent Labour Keating Government. The Kangaroos didn't win in 1998, but the initial year for this election would have been 1999, a year the team added its fourth flag.

Some observations on how the number 27 was prominent in North Melbourne's grand final appearances of 1977.

  • 1977 marked 27 years since North Melbourne first appeared in a grand final
  • They were forced to play both grand finals without their captain Keith Greig, who had a knee injury. Greig's guernsey number was 27
  • In the draw, North were trailing by 27 points at 3/4 time
  • At 3/4 time in the draw, there were a combined total of 27 behinds (North 15, Collingwood 12)
  • At 3/4 time in the replay, there were a combined total of 27 goals (North 15, Collingwood 12)
  • The replay was North Melbourne's 27th game of the season, the only time a team has played this many
  • John Cassin was the only player to play all 27 games, again, the only time this has occurred
  • North won the replay by 27 points

From 1999:

After round 18, Collingwood had 1953 points against, 1953 also being a year in which they won a premiership.
After round 19, Melbourne had 1955 points against, 1955 also being a year in which they won a premiership.
After round 20, Adelaide had 1998 points against, 1998 also being a year in which they won a premiership.
After round 21, Carlton had 1938 points against, 1938 also being a year in which they won a premiership.

Not on my watch... Collingwood only seem to win flags on years which are multiple of 10 (90, 10, 20), forgive 2000 because Y2K incident lol

They often make the GF in those years...

2010 - Draw/Win
2000 - Not in it
1990 - Win
1980 - Loss
1970 - Loss
1960 - Loss
1950 - Not in it
1940 - Not in it
1930 - Win
1920 - Loss
1910 - Win
1900 - Not in it

I expect we'll see them in it in 2020.

1900 was not a leap year.
