I was chatting amongst my mates years ago discussing FA and the idea we came up with

1-4 years (clubs have power) - Can trade to whomever offers the best deal
4-8 years - Current situation where players and clubs have to both agree
8+ Player power. Players can sign wherever they want for any contract length they want
i used to think this.
Im at a point now where i reckon you open slather it and just let contracts dictate when a player can move.
Trades only for contracted players. No FA/compensation.
Say if a Cerra situation arises, Freo apply for a compensation pick....AFL assesses it based on health of list/quality of player/etc.

Yeah I used to think this as well... But in Australian sports players seem to chase success over money (mostly). So this would lead to a number of superteams (which the current FA system is already slowly doing)

If every player can sign a 2 year rookie deal, then walk to the club of their choice as a 20yo, may as well just do away with the draft

this was my concern
then i realised we have the capacity to be one of those superteams...so why not.

I think that is actually in line with what he has said all trade period.

I.e they arent trading him as they are short on small forwards.
Yeah but you'd still name your price.

We weren't going to trade Daniher, but Dodoro named the price, which was including a good player in the trade.
Bulldogs weren't going to trade Dunkley, but they named two good firsts as the price.

I suspect there is still sour grapes about last year. If he had a different preference of club I dare say they wouldn't of such a strong stance.

Honestly if a player so vehemently doesn't want to play for you, you trade him. Can't imagine he's going to be giving them high output next year if everything that has been said is to be believed
