Here’s an interesting hypothetical (maybe). The AFL suddenly change the rules tomorrow, and clubs can recruit anyone, any day, not just in the trade period. Geelong sign Marshall and Worpel on Saturday. Who, if anyone, do you drop from the team that beat Brisbane to play these two in the Preliminary Final next week?
Clearly Clark comes out for Worpel.

The other one is much harder... Bowes played a decent game against Brisbane but for me he'd be the next head on the chopping block.

Then you'd have probably Martin as sub...

... although I did have an unusual and probably extremely controversial idea on the sub earlier in the season.

Dangerfield.

Why? Because he's a power athlete who operates best in bursts, he's versatile with his size, speed, strength and overhead ability and could therefore fill different roles depending on the state of the game at the time and who he's replacing, and he's also potentially liable to break down if we overuse him (and this is a way not to do that).

Could you imagine late in the third or early in the fourth in a final, the opposition mids and defenders have already absorbed three quarters of high intensity finals football, and a fresh-as-a-daisy Dangerfield casually trots out and stands next to them? Talk about demoralising.

If he's not required to fill a specific injury gap, you could chuck him in the guts with a quarter or so to just run amok when everyone else is fatigued and digging deep into their energy reserves to make it to the end of the game.

I reckon it could be an absolute game changer.

Now of course it won't happen, and it really shouldn't in a final given he's the captain, spiritual leader, etc, etc. You want him out there, I get that. But purely on the basis of maximising impact, I think it would be an intriguing option. Personally I think it would've been worth a shot in the second half of the regular season, just to test it out.

The theoretical players to come out doesn't really matter. Bowes or Martin can easy enough if required but unlikely we are going to get as charmed a run with injury next year and we can use the 23rd, 24th, 25th players for rotation regardless.

At the moment we would be in trouble if Atkins got injured. A player like Jezza you are never going to be able to cover if they miss but it's not an ideal situation when someone as limited as Atkins is so important. Worpel would offset that a bit. Combine it with the fact we would effectively just be subbing Worpel + cap space in for Cam Guthrie as far as list and salary cap goes and we are ahead on 2025 output by default. I'm not worried about any opportunity cost as all the A graders are off the table for next year and beyond next year we will have a ton of cap space from retirements.

i think the Marshall / worpell hypothetical is a good one in illustrating why some people have reservations with getting worpell.

let’s make it starting 22 and exclude the sub, because if you’re paying him $750-800k you want him to be a starter. Bowes has been raised but no one else really. I’ll throw in Hunphries, but will probably get shot down for suggesting it. But I honestly can’t think of anyone else. So he’d be the 20th(ish) picked but probably in the top 10 earners.

This is where I see the issue.

No shouting, but they play completely different roles.

Good thing we are going to a 5 person bench next year.
Worps will rotate with the midfield group with the starting 3, the bench mid and the winger.

We've done that for a long time now, they've just had to use Miers and Mannagh in that role as we haven't had the extra mid to do it.

Lineup Round 0 or Round 1 2026:

FB:HUMPHRIESSDKO'SULLIVAN
HB:STEWARTHENRYZUTHRIE
C:BLICAVSHOLMESDEMPSEY
HF:MANNAGHCAMERONMIERS
FF:STENGLENEALEDANGER (C)
FOL:MARSHALLSMITHATKINS
INT:O'CONNOR (DEF)MULLIN (UTILITY)WORPEL (MID)
INT:CLOSE (FWD)MARTIN (UTILITY)

Could still easily add Bowes or Kolo back in?...
Jhye Clark or Ollie Henry or George Stevens?
Mitch Knevitt? even Mitch Edwards getting a crack into that squad?
There's soo many possibilities but with no more sub it's much easier to play guys and take risks with positions.

I think most are missing that rule change with the bench.

There's no way we bring in Worpedo and stick him in the VFL. He'd very much best 23. Ax needs a bloke who plays the defensive role like he does. Worps can do that but can also swing into an attacking role too.
Baz and Max will do their thing, Oisin will contunue to be deployed as the tagger. Rowan tapping it down to them.

Lots to be excited about even with 2025 still going.

Was a discussion earlier about height as a defender and if it’s relevant or not. I think it becomes very relevant for a key defender who is undersized when there is a quality entry kicked to advantage and they are giving up 8-10cm in size, the ability to get a spoil in is near impossible with the lack of reach.

On Friday night there was probably 3-4 instances neale was in a fantastic spot over the back to mark at its highest point and Harris andrews reached over the top and spoiled it. That doesnt happen with a smaller defender.

What Neale worked out is he needs to put a body on, mainly by jumping into Andrews. As soon as he put the knee into the back, he got a contest that he won and got a goal from it. He can outreach most other defenders, but with Andrews he needs to put the knee into the hip or lower back.

Our round 2 pick this year wouldn't be worth much. I think it'd be more likely a deal would centre around our first.

Yes but my point was they will want more than our r1 and we will want to keep the future picks for flexibility for Butters etc next year so we will trade our current 2nd instead of future 2nd.

Stanley? Can't drop someone who wasn't in the the 23 to start with.

He was in the 23 before injury. In any case marshall would be our starting ruck and worpel would replace our lowest ranked fringe mid in the 23.

It simply depends on what the trade offer would be for me.

More than what I think he is worth = trade.

Less than what I think he is worth = not trade.
Well in that case every single player is tradeable

Sure, an extra on the bench helps. But the principle is the same. I would rate worpel in our bottom 5 yet he’ll be getting paid in our top 10.

Well Thursday next week is the day for a visit to the law courts. Anyone free?
I'm quite sure that a certain thread on a certain board will be inundated with updates

Next week is when Scott & Co will earn their keep in making sure the guys maintain their focus on the task ahead and not getting sucked into any off field distractions

You guys have totally forgotten Cillian Burke. Since his late start (carry-over injury), he's been durable (injury-wise; all current Irish imports have been) and learning at a fast clip in the VFL. Pacy. Tall (192). Expect an AFL debut in 2026. If he impresses and fills a positional need, he'll be a fixture.

I don't know it in Gaelic, but we'll also have an Irish version of the Dash brothers (Mullin & Burke) tearing up the ground.

The Cats need to open an Embassy in the Republic of Ireland.
