West Coast Eagles Priority Pick (2024)

So what? The AFL is one of the only leagues in the world that rewards a team for shitting the bed. You finish last in our comp, you get pick 1. This year the Eagles will get pick 1 and 2 + a ton of cap space, how and why do they deserve an end of first round compo pick on top of that?

It's not like they've had a decade + in the wilderness here either, they won a flag 7 years ago. They had the chance to extend Barrass/Allen, but they decided they wanted to hit the draft. To me it makes little sense to reward a team that has put themselves in this position by making terrible decisons (Kelly, Barrass, Allen).

I'm totally bemused at the angst from other fans on here. It's the most half pregnant nonsense of assistance the AFL could come up with. Even with the Allen compo this is going to do nothing to shift the dial - have you seen the state of the West Coast list??

This does little to nothing and all that will happen is we'll be back here again next year after another 1-2 win season debating whether more assistance is needed and somehow aghast that a pick in the mid-20s and some rookie space didn't start to solve the problem.

This is the worst performed team over four seasons in AFL/VFL history - so either do it properly or don't do it at all.
I think they need assistance. The Eagles have made the competition worse because those teams fortunate enough to play them 2x have a significant advantage.

I’m just shocked a so called ‘proud’ club could get it so wrong on and off the field. They have been an absolute basket case.

Given the AFL make up the rules as they go, they should have given the Eagles priority access to one of the Queensland or NSW Academy players.

Brisbane are Premiers, do they really need another top 5 pick?

Twomey now says the rules are changing next year so the non finals teams will be able to sign FAs without diluting their own compo (which is what WC asked for this year)

The pick everyone is crying about is going to be mid 20s and will possibly be used for Starcevich which is the exact same result for WC as the above

So youre all losing your shit over 4 extra rookie spots effectively

Under the new AFL rules the Swans and Bulldogs would be in the same boat as the Eagles/Roos/Tigers/Bombers but the teams that won one or two more games would be treated differently.

Here's a thought: maybe get rid of a ridiculous compo system tied to ladder position. Oscar Allen being worth pick 2 to leave WC and join Brisbane but worth potentially pick 25-30 sign the same contract going the other way is absurd.

Seems like a strange system.

Win a Premiership.7 years ago and get handouts
Win a Premiership 59 years ago (or never) and get told to jam it up your Jimmy.

I'm sure there's logic to it somewhere. Good luck finding it though.
Keep saying it but the real outrage here is that the AFL have basically given Brisbane the priority pick, not the eagles.
How the entire comp isn’t up in arms about this beats me.

West coast ASKED specifically at the beginning to have their Allen compo unaffected by the dilution of FA compo if they signed Starcevich. Greg Swann said no to what would have been a much more palatable request and instead said “here’s pick 19 instead”.

Now pick 19 is going to Brisbane anyway (as per cal Twomey on X tonight). But if the AFL had accepted the first proposal of WCE, they wouldn’t have got anything because the draper and Allen acquisitions would have cancelled out the starcevich compo in full.

Basically the AFL might as well have given the priority pick straight to the premiers. It’s actually incredible.

100%

Well done for being one of the handful of oppo supporters that actually realises what's happened

And now WCs request will be a league rule next year. So the WC assistance package is literally just 4 extra rookie spots

So much melting on here.
Can't remember but was there this much melting when NTH and GC received there multiple assistance packages?
Oh boy, the NMFC PP thread did about 40 pages' worth on the day of the announcement alone.

Ironically, many of those most up in arms were Eagles supporters.

Agreed that the changing to the rule next year makes it an even bigger mockery.

What I don’t understand is why your club is so willingly putting 19 on the table for Starcevich anyway? Why not offer lions a pick in the 40s or 50s?

I know right! It's effectively just giving Brisbane and West Coast picks 19 and 2 to orchestrate a trade they should be capable of managing themselves.

Free agency comp just has to go now. It's embarrassing for the league.

Yep, its a joke. This is after the same Greg Swann who has overseen Brisbane plunder the draft via F/S and NGA picks, waltzes into AFLHQ and suddenly pulls the rug out from under all the other clubs feet.

No but apparently they need an end of first rounder they weren't entitled to.

And the one club that least deserves any further assistance gets another to help with gaining an academy player on the cheap

They are also the only league that pumps draft assistance into its pet teams playing finals and winning grand grand finals.

Brisbane are about to land a massive free leg up with multiple free agents and an academy kid who is the best pure mid in the draft.

So what if the team on the canvas gets a live pick 25. That team gave up the equivalent of that pick over the past 3 years by the AFL helping other team playing finals. Who don't need help.

So the answer is stop giving g teams draft assistance who don't need it. Then teams at the bottom who get nothing don't continue contributing paying the bill.

That was done so the bottom teams get fairly compensated for losing gun players.

If the reigning premiers losing a gun player they don't get a massive leg up.

Nothing wrong with that. It's one part of equalisation that actually works.
