Andrew Strauss has more test runs than Bradman. That’s injustice.
Bradman had six year war in the middle of his career and it took months to get anywhere to play someone decent 6994 runs in 52 Tests still speaks for itself.

some people think he can eclipse warne's 708 - what will that do to your OCD if that happens.

personally i dont think lyon will get to 708.

lyon has already played as much test cricket as warne. the cricket purists know the pecking order.
...pretty much what you'd think it would I suppose. Would definitely be a huge testament to his durability if he was around long enough to do it though so it'd probably be a little easier to handle mentally.

Lyon almost feels like the single biggest
anomaly/cognitive dissonance when it comes to his place in history. Objectively on raw data alone it looks as though he's achieved far more than he really should've yet simultaneously on the purely subjective spectrum ignoring the stats it feels as if he's underrated.

Spin bowlers nearly always have worse averages than pace bowlers. They get to do a lot of the grunt work on flat tracks snd generally have to be stock bowlers as well as strike bowlers. Completely different roles in a team.
Mcgrath, Hazlewood, Lillee and Cummins all have lower averages than Warne. Doesn't mean they're better.

Interesting statement that last paragraph as your assertion is correct yet all bar Hazlewood you could at least make a case for. Also I kinda feel as if McGrath (of those that I'm old enough to have seen) also did a lot of grunt work on flat tracks as well as being a strike bowler so I'm not entirely sure there's as much difference in the roles as you suggest.

Yet it does bring Lyon sharply into focus as he has pretty much been the "hold an end and give the pace brigade a rest" bowler for over a decade with this particular fast bowling crew. Maybe that's his nichè in the historical legacy discussions for cricket fans in the future: The best ever to hold an end?

The saying "Caught and bowled" when it doesn't happen in that order at all.
I always thought it was because that's how dismissals are listed on the scorecard.

"Caught Neser Bowled Neser" gets abbreviated to Caught and Bowled Neser", for instance.

Yeah that makes sense. It’ll never not annoy me though hahaha.

The amount of people looking at Stokes struggling to bat and not bowling today and blaming the bloke for being weak or whatever.

He's not weak, and he's not unfit. He's genuinely doing too much. He's their best bowler and the bloke they rely on to dig them out of a hole. He's both a workhorse and a strike bowler, and he shouldn't have to do either whilst captaining and rescuing them when the upper order has failed.

We went in with a deliberate plan in the first two tests to attack the 4th change bowler. In those tests, it was Carse, and it meant that Stokes couldn't rest for long enough to recover; over after over into his legs and shoulders and knees. And the result?

He starts cramping up hard in 40 degree heat. He can't move properly. He starts snapping at his players, and rolls on the ground and hits his head, seeing stars because he's as taut as a bowstring.

This is mental disintegration without the jeering and boorishness. Simply force your opposition number to perform until exhausted and then force him to do it again until he can't anymore.

Today, he just couldn't.

I don't imagine too many on here calling him weak or soft would be capable of bowling 51 overs across three tests whilst also sitting equal fourth on the aggregate for runs and facing the most balls in the series.

it didn't help that the rest of his team couldn't bat out significant time to allow him to rest either.
