Rare games where a player kicked a bag

Probably the best example from a Geelong player I can think of.

John Mossop in the 1981 Qualifying Final was thrown forward and kicked 7 goals against Collingwood. Before and after he never kicked more than 3 goals in a match. Except on two occasions. 5 goals in 1980, and 6 goals in 1984. Both against, you guessed it - Collingwood.

Would Darren Bewick's 9 against Geelong in the centenary game be considered 'rare'?
6 in the 93 prelim as well. He was a notable goal scorer. Still qualifies though I suppose. Also he kicked 8 goals against West Coast Round 1, 1993.

Michael Symons kicked 5 for the Dons in 94. Might have been against Richmond. I'm not sure.

I remember Brett Beinke kicked 7 in a preseason game for Adelaide in the early 2000's. I thought he was primed for a big year. He didn't deliver.

Robbie Dean kicked 6 against North in 1970 and 4.6 against the Tigers a year or two later. But when he switched to South Melbourne he bagged 8 and 6 in his first 2 games (the second of which was against us!!) That was in 1976.

Not bad for a 6'2" wingman!!

I always reckoned Bobby Rose erred in the 1970 GF by not taking McKenna off when he was clearly concussed because Robbie Dean could have played full forward in the second half and done well.

Troy Bond for Carlton may have kicked 5 or 6 in 1994. Good game for Adelaide in the 97 GF.

Rod Jameson 8 goals for the Crows in 1992 I think. Could have been 1991. He could play forward he kicked 49 goals in 1991.

My uncle and his mates would bang on about Rod Owen. Played 78 games over 9 seasons for 143 career goals with a bag of 8 against Fitzroy and two bags of 7 against Carlton and North.

Found this while looking up this info - what a sad tale.

Lewis Johnston kicked 6 in 2013, only played 3 games after that before being delisted.

Everyones favourite James “captain” Cook kicked 6 in the 1997 prelim vs Adelaide, maybe 7 if an apple wasn't thrown at him as he kicked before three quarter time.

Kicked 7 in a game against Hawthorn weeks before that.

But never really went on with it and was gone a season later from memory.

A similar story with another journeyman Simon Minton-Connell. But not at the Dogs. He kicked a few 7 or 8 bags early at Carlton and lived off on it at two other clubs.

They just stick out to me because they were at Footscray for a few seasons.

Minto Connell kicked 5 against West coast twice from memory. In 98 final, and in 97 at the WACA. He was OK on his day. I remember Cook. Took a screamer for Carlton against North I think back in 93. Both these guys ex Carlton players lol.

I think Ilija Grijic kicked 6 against North in 1993. As did Ben Sexton. Scott West had a game where he kicked 6 too I think as did Thorpe.

Probably a bit off track but for all the oldies....do you remember coming home from games in the early seventies (because all the games were on the Saturday) and checking the radio to see which full forward had kicked the most goals that weekend?

Was it Hudson or Wade this week? McKenna or Jesaulenko? Geoff Blethyn used to kick bags as well....it was the way footy was played back then. Bags were certainly bigger too.....5 a week was pretty average for a gun full forward in a good team back then. If you kicked 10 you'd done something special.
