Just watched watsy mernda , watsy young guys are quick, had 5 goal lead on mernda in 1st quarter . 22 pt lead at half time. Mernda just ground them down in second half and got home by a kick.

Anyone from Watsonia on this thread?

Spoke to a few people on the committee at La Trobe Uni (VAFA Div 6) and they advised me that Watsonia were offering players in the pre-season $150 a game sight unseen.

You can treat that with a grain of salt if you like, but surely there are other ways to recruit players (and from a better standard). La Trobe aren't sure if they lost many as it was prior to players being registered so no transfer required.

Watsonia have done that forever. Smart
play, don’t need to pay them in the 2s

literally the oldest trick in the book to
Build numbers

If they aren’t cleared from Latrobe then what’s the big deal? A Latrobe student doesn’t equal Latrobe player

Watched my first quarter of Ivanhoe this season. Dear christ.
Caught up with a couple of locals at the pub when I got home to Kilmore last night, who said it (Ivanhoe) is the best D3 list/program they've seen since joining the NFNL.

They’ll win both grades by 50+ if not more.

I know it’s only practice matches but they beat Parade and NP in them and both are going well in the division above

Only thing that can stop them is a massive quarter either with or against the wind at Preston in the GF..
A Bundy/Monty sort of game from 2013ish

the players watts get are not the top of the tree at the uni as all the really good young blokes go home or back to country sides to play as they get enough good coin to enable them to just study and not worry about part time work

Speaking of that it’ll be interesting to see where finals are hosted. Would love to see D3 at PCO or Panther Place.

How has Joel Kleiman been going? He seemed like a very skillful player in the games I watched at berg with a good footy brain but for whatever reason was maligned by supporters and senior coaching staff. It's a shame to lose quality people but at the end of the day you can't blame him for leaving.

Great assessment Broomsticks - very skillfull and fantastic footy IQ. 'Sauce' has fitted in really well at the club by the looks of things and I thought had his best game for the season on the weekend, setting up a lot of plays from the wing and half back with great ball use and decision making. We are wrapt to have him at Ivanhoe.

What happens down at Hoe Stadium outside of the 30th of May and the 1st of August mate? Rest of the fixture is just a series of practice matches isn't it? :D:D

Mappa - you may need to ring your sponsor again as it sounds like you have fallen off the wagon and started drinking again before midday on a work day.

Round 5 action ......

Laurimar v Heidelberg West - The Power back home and eyeing another 4 points against a team everyone suggests is in the big pack to make make a finals push. West will be disappointed in missing out last week against Epping and keen to test themselves against a top outfit in the Power. Even though they have lost Arthur with a long term injury, the Power have class and great depth across every line and I think will win this very comfortably.

Epping v Ivanhoe - A great win last week for a young group without Macaffer was good signs for the 'next generation' list. Now they will be keen to take on the Hoers at home and test themselves against one of the best performed teams so far in Div 3. I read on PlayHQ that there are quite a few changes (5) for the Hoers this week with some key players missing, but also welcome back a few from injury and travel. I think Ivanhoe still get the points in the end.

Turtles v Kilmore - huge game for both teams in terms of wanting to improve their chances of playing finals footy later in the year. If the Turtles win they put a 2 game game gap on the two blues, but if Kilmore can get the points (and have already played the bye) then things tighten up. Big loss in Ellis for the Turtles and they have the home ground, but I think Kilmore bounce back this week and pinch a very important away 4 points.

Mernda v Kinglake - a poor start for the Lakers and not what they would have been looking for to kick off season 2026. The trip to Mernda is never easy for any side and Nippa has the Demons playing some good footy, even if it is slightly under the radar due to all the hoo har around Power and Hoes. As mentioned previously, Mernda are a threat and they will flex big time on the weekend I would think.

Lalor v Watsonia - the bloods back on the home deck and at time of writing this no team list to see if they got a couple back. That said, the 'Surprising Saints' are continuing to shock alot of the pre-season 'experts' and continue to play well above external expextations. IF they want to take another step towards finals action later in the year, then this is a must win against the bloods - even without Clokey. Watsy get the win.

The model/approach HW have adopted to recruit should be commended. There are obviously limitations to what they can achieve because of player points but if they can maintain this group of players into the future it’s a big positive. Look to be on the right path of sustainability for the future and for a club with no 19s or juniors this is critical.
