Oh lord please don’t make him captain 🙏. I’d rather him focus on his kicking. He will always be positive around the group 🤢🤮. If he is captain or not. We will just go back to Hepple style leadership. I’d rather try someone else.

Returning to a Heppelesque style of captaincy is also my fear.

Durhams speech is the one speech that gave me hope. I can’t believe peeps put Caldwell above him???? Ask yourself who is more likely to play 200 more games? Brave Duzza or notoriety injury prone Caldwell??? They voted for him cos he does a fist pump which the crowd loves. Duzza is our next true leader I don’t care what anyone says.

Don't know how good McGrath will end up but I'm pretty confident we just missed the next james hird in McClug. Can't help but be disappointed

I'm not being glib in asking this - but if our recruitment team thought that that the next Hird was out there, don't you think they would've picked him? What makes you think you know better than guys that do this for a living?
I thought id revisit my reaction to drafting Mcgrath. Also couldn't help but include one of the more tasty responses.

So we've established we don't want single minded and inaccessible and we also don't want collaborative and universally liked.

He ended up playing some decent footy in the middle, but I doubt he starts there next year? Back to HB I assume.

Caldwell, Durham, Merrett with Duursma and Fiorini on the wings round 1?
I think he can fit in the rotation.

I think Nguyen filled the hole in defence pretty well even though he was just more of a stopper.

Then you'd hope McKay stays healthy and Redman can go back to distributing.

You can think about it in extremes I suppose, though you needn't.

I think McGrath as VC probably worked okay as a foil for Merrett's demands for high standards. He could easily have played good cop to Merrett's bad cop.
If McGrath can find the balance between being supportive and demanding high standards on and off the field, that would be find. If he can show and prove that he also has those standards on the field, that would be even better. I haven't seen anything that suggests that he has found that balance, save the game he captained against St Kilda.

i haven’t seen anything that suggests he can do it save for that most recent time that he demonstrated he could do it!

agree he needs to do it consistently but I believe!

I want to believe, except for a few reasons;
1. He was a Heppell acolyte. He could have chosen to model himself on BJ. Who understands these things?
2. He has never been the guy I've thought will stand up when the game is on the line. All I could say is that he rises with the group, rather than being the cause of the group rising.
3. Elitist private school toff.

He played one ok game in the middle then it was back to his old shit, guy couldn’t hit the side of a barn kicking forward of center and can only hit a target in the backline if he’s under no pressure and his team mate is in a paddock of space and the ball will still bounce a couple times before it gets to him

McGrath, Caldwell, Durham, Redman.
Captain comes from these four. Probably McGrath, almost by default. I think Robert’s definitely has leadership potential, but he’s just a kid. Let him enjoy his
early years in the system, still developing his craft.
