Player Watch #19 Peter Ladhams

The simple fact of the matter is that I saw more in Amartey than I did in Ladhams.

It's not about punishing Ladhams, it's about rewarding Amartey.

I’m asking all the so called experts here saying he has plenty to work on what exactly he needs to work on after seeing him play one senior game ? There are plenty that have to work on effort after watching that yesterday but as for what individuals need to work on that fits with their role would love to hear from the experts,

I thought he was ok against Goldstein who has the most hitouts in AFL history. We only lost the hitouts by 3. We won the centre clearances so he played his part. The longer the game went the better he got. McInerney doesn’t kill it in the last quarter through the centre square unless Ladhams plays a solid quarter.

To be critical game sense is lacking at the moment but it will come. Playing on over the mark, umpires will always pull you up for that.

However, I thought he was fine and will improve with more game time.

Consistency of effort seems to be a thing he needs to work on from my perspective. I thought he started the game fairly active but there were more than a few instances throughout the game of let's say questionable effort or decisions that I saw which the coaches I'm sure won't miss. Things like flicking the ball over his head into the corridor in the defensive 50 which resulted in a shot at goal in the 1st quarter, choosing to boot the ball off the ground in defensive 50 into a throng of players rather than bodying the ball to neutralise the play.

By his standards, Longmire was pretty unimpressed in his press conference when describing Ladhams' game so I think they'll be on his hammer to get him to improve. He has had a few injuries during preseason and has never been a 1st ruck for real at AFL level so I'm not writing him off whatsoever and with more senior time to learn I think he'll improve. I want to see him notch more than 1 tackle and 2 contested possessions in his next game, that's for sure. I'll back him to improve.

I’m a massive rap for his skill set. Granted he could have more intensity but I think our coaching staff should get the best out of him and many of our supporters will be singing a different tune.

This is broadly where I fall with him. He's got the skillset but he needs to learn the required level of application, consistent effort required across 4 quarters as a first ruck. I'll back the coaching staff (Longmire and Cox in particular) plus the leadership group to make that very clear to him. They've done it before with talented guys who haven't hit the needed level of effort yet to fulfil their promise, I'll back them again.

Ladhams looks AFL standard though. His bed was fine. In an ideal world we'd have given him another week or two in the reserves.

I like Amartey as depth, but disagree with this pretty strongly tbh.

Ladhams did have a more favourable role than Amartry last week, but was still more involved in the game IMHO.

I hope Amartey makes it, but I'm a bit worried about the club being able to find a suitable role for him. He's not big enough to be a number one ruck, and his forward craft isn't good enough (yet) to be a forward that rotates through the ruck. Hope he can prove me wrong, because he's got loads of talent, but just struggling to see where he fits in atm.

Amartey played a few ripper games up forward last year. He needs to play ahead of McLean as the second tall imo. Not to mention he is much more competitive and has more strings to his bow.

Ladhams is an AFL level footballer. It's just about how much he wants it.

A couple of sensational over the shoulder handballs to feed our runners out of the midfield. He has serious talent. Such a good feeling to have a young ruckman with so much potential

Indeed has really only had 1 sub performance in the first quarter against North.

Give him time under our system.

Against pretty underwhelming opponents in the ruck which allowed him to win a stack of hit outs and possessions around the ground but he had 13 contested possessions compared to two last week which suggests to me that he had his head much more in the right state to play the way we need him to. Still a few loose bits of decision making now and then but certainly the kind of game far more befitting of someone wanting to be our long-term number one ruck.

Horse pretty much said exactly that in the presser. Indicated that he noted the improvement. High praise from the master of understatement.
Good to see the guys getting around him too.

There was a bit of Shane Mumford in his game last night. Even the high hit across Yeo's chops that he got away with
