Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Jones is the better player pure and simple. Birchall has to have 30 possies just to have the same effect as what 10 from Jones would have.

People get too carried away with stats. Birchall is a good player, but depends too much on his mates getting him he pill, whereas Jones has the ability to win his own and do some damage.
You guys are pretty funny.

30 touches of Birchall's to be as useful as 10 of Jones'?

If Birchall gets the ball he does something with it, he's the exactly the type of player you don't want getting the ball 30 times.

Relies on his team mates to get it for him? Laughable, on a lot of different levels.

Mainly because receivers don't just stand around waiting for the ball, they run the right spots and time it to perfection in order to then move it on, whilst also choosing which areas to attack. Also laughable to suggest Birchall is purely an outside player who doesn't get involved in pressure situations.

What is with North Melbourne supporters and having no idea about Birchall?

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

When Birchall gets a contested possession, does his mum let a dove go. If so she must have a shitload of doves at home and the doves must be missing those 2 she let loose last season.

Id have him 15th and keep him there until he takes the skirt off and plays football rather then chasey

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

My thoughts:
(1-3 standout)
1. (5) Scott Pendlebury
2. (1) Marc Murphy
3 (12) Nathan Jones

(4-7 could be in any order)
4 (13) Shannon Hurn
5 (7) Patrick Ryder
6 (14) Grant Birchall
7 (2) Dale Thomas

(8-7 all solid players)
8 (42) Robert Warnock
9 (11) Shaun Higgins
10 (61) Matthew Stokes
11 (33) Sam Gilbert
12 (43) Andrew Swallow

(13-18 look like they will make it)
13 (36) Jake Edwards
14 (60) Clint Bartram
15 (9) Mitch Clark
16 (15) Travis Varcore
17 (10) Marcus Drum
18. (41) Rhan Hooper

(19-20 I have some doubts)
19. (4) Josh Kennedy
20. (3) Xavier Ellis
Last two have done nothing to suggest they will be good players in my opinion although Ellis is still a stick and KP's take time.

obviously havent watched him play of late...

looks very likely to make a huge step towards becoming a very good afl player

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Imagine if Hawthorn drafted Pendlebury and Ryder instead of Ellis and Muston.

They would have an unbelievable slab of talent coming through.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Expect Dempsey to be knocking on the door to that list by seasons end.

The bloke has had injury after injury, but has serious talent and hopefully he can stay on the park to display it.

All those players look good but Ellis is the least impressive in my opinion. Saw two of his NAB cup games and he looked just ok to me. The guys in the category above him have shown much more at AFL level but admittedly Ellis and Varcoe are really a year behind the others in development. Who do you put him above?

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

In 10 years time i think Robbie Warnock will easily be rated top 5 from this draft pool.
Xavier Ellis easily top 10 at the end of the 2008 season, very classy kid. Smooth mover, a little weak in the contest but a top prospect.

We should have drafted Ryder instead of Dowler but I'm very happy with the Ellis selection, is all class and will show that to the football world by years end..

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

:thumbsu: nice job! i would almost agree, but my top 5 would be something like this:

1) Scott Pendlebury - absolute superstar, edges out Murphy due to more games = more quality provided for observers.
2) Marc Murphy - unlucky not to keep no.1 mantle, very classy...future star
3) Grant Birchall - another superstar, consistent, strong, classy...will be a 200+ player of quality
4) Shannon Hurn - strong and has great attitude, very important player to eagles, which justifies his standing at no.4
5) Dale Thomas - simple: X-Factor...exciting and explosive player...not as highly rated as others due to the fact that on any given day, an X-Factor player can be up above the clouds, but over time, can certainly be in-consistent...ala. leon davis...good one week, putrid beyond belief the next...

You just cannot cannot leave out Jones.
For me no matter what, Pendles, Jones, Murph and Thomas have to be in everyones top 5 for it to be a serious list.

Agreed. And i guarantee you that Jones is more important to Melbourne than Hurn is to WC.

Haha that made me laugh

I think Marcus Drum will be the big improver of this year. A better version of Mundy IMO.

Argee fully. If he is able to get the tempo of the game playing across half back he could be in for a very good season. He's not a forward yet like Connellys had planned for last year

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Watch out for Simon Buckley this year he's very quick loves to run and carry and break tackles and finds plenty of the ball and is a good height at 190cm

He was very exiting to watch when we played Geelong:thumbsu:

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

I wouldn't say they have struck gold. With 2 of the top 5 picks or something like that, they were bound to get some really good players

Fair point, but it is still quite easy to stuff up top picks. We were openly mocked (by Greg Miller, mind you) at the time that we wasted these two picks.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

And i hope your not saying Jones is anything like Swan!!! Jones is an inside mid who earns his disposials and is probebly one of the toughest (hardest at the ball) midfielders going around!! but what makes him stand out is that he is incredibly tough but he also has awesome skills!!

Swan=Cheap posessions off half back

You are not even worth arguing with your comments are stupid and pointless....

Oh dear...

In hindsight Pendelbury would have been fantastic for our list.I'm still happy with Ellis, and think he'll be a very good player in the coming years.Dowler seems in excess to our needs considering Thorp is already in front of him, but he's still very talented, and having key position talent on the list is still very valuable. But Ryder would have been very handy for our defence in the coming years, I was dead keen on him and Hurn before the draft.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

My top 10:
1. Murphy-Class
2. Pendelbury-Class. Put them in a raffle and you'd be ecstatic with either of them
3. Ryder-Bloke earlier in the thread said if he played a Goodes like role a Brownlow may be on its way. I completely agree and have said the same thing before. Obviously there is a touch of bias there
4. Nathan Jones-Like the look of this kid. Dees building some decent talent
5. Andrew Swallow-Liked his season last year
6. Shannon Hurn-Good kick on him
7. Birchall-Decent player. Not outstanding
8. Thomas-Overrated. Needs much greater consistency. LOL at the Pies fans putting him at two in this draft. Has flair
9. Gilbert-Really needs to bulk up but played well last season
10. Higgins-Needs greater consistency

Honourable mentions to Bartram, Hooper, Warnock and Stokes. Regarding the other Essendon players in that draft, Dempsey, Neagle and Lonergan look to be good players. Im sure a few people saw Dempsey play during the NAB Cup and were impressed with his run and dash off half back. Promising player and after he gets a couple of seasons under his belt would not be surprised if people put him in the top 10 for this draft. Neagle had an interrupted pre season and played against the Saints in the NAB cup. Kicked 4 and is a big boy. Looks likely that he'll become our next full forward after Lloyd. Like the look of him. Lonergan is a tough player that is in line to play round 1. Can play forward and will have stints through the midfield.
Happy with the recruiting of the Bombers in that draft as it looks likely that of the 5 players picked, 3-4 look like they'll be entrenched in our best 22 in the next couple of seasons. Also got a player by the name of Heath Hocking in that rookie draft. Would have been a good chance for a Round 1 spot except he got injured recently.

Found it alot harder then i thought it would be but if you dont see it being right make your own i know a few Hawthorn supporters will fine this interesting

mate that is a top effort.:thumbsu:

the only changes i'd make are birchall move upto 7 and ryder swap with hurn.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

keep on the watch out for cleve hughes this yr. loves the party life but appears to have settled down and bulked up. great hands, courage and long kick,

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

i remain only half convinced.
he's got a bit more confidence in his play this year, and he's about halfway to his ideal playing weight, but some of his disposal isn't ideal.
he's not really breaking lines with run or long disposal, and he's not winning much ball in contested situations.

sure there has been some general all-round improvement, but i'm yet to see him influencing games with a skill or signature move that could become his bread and butter.

most of the best players have some sort of signature move that makes them better than the other players around them - time will tell whether ellis can get one happening.
