The final Slam of 2008 is underway on Monday! :thumbsu: Rafael Nadal is officially the World #1 and I must say it looks a bit odd seeing him on top of the draw. He will most likely face Phillip Kohlschreiber in the third round which could prove tricky and he’ll probably then go on to play Tomas Berdych next however given how much of a headcase Berdych is perhaps Karlovic is the more likely opponent. Nadal has never gone beyond the Quarter Finals in New York and his 11-5 W/L record is clearly his worst record at the Slams. However given his success this year I really don’t see anyone causing him troubles until at least the Semi’s where he should run into the in-form Andy Murray.

The bottom half of the draw is once again loaded, especially the top half. Roddick, Gonzalez and Djokovic are all there as are young guns Tsonga and Cilic. One of my new favourites Ernests Gulbis will face Thomas Johansson first up and should he win he’ll face Andy Roddick. An extremely tough draw however I give him a chance to cause a massive upset as I don't rate Roddick. Federer’s draw is pretty easy and he shouldn’t have any problems until at least the QF stage however given his recent form perhaps Andreev could cause him troubles in the 4th round should the two meet.

The pick of the first round matches is Gasquet v Haas and it’s a shame it’s a first round match. James Blake v Donald Young could also be an interesting encounter or it could prove to be a one-sided affair. Lleyton Hewitt is out of the tournament after undergoing arthroscopic hip surgery.

As for the women, Ivanovic will face Dushevina first up but will then play Aussie Casey Dellacqua in the second round which is disappointing. Mauresmo looms in the third round but I doubt anyone fears her these days. The Williams sisters are both in the bottom half of the top half of the draw and will probably meet in the Quarters. The only chance that doesn’t eventuate is if Radwanska knocks off Venus and Vaidisova beats Serena, both likely 4th round matches.

I’ve been pumping her tires up all year and Sorana Cirstea faces Safarova first up, a tough match and if she does win she’ll then meet Kuznetsova. Tough draw, no real expectations. Wozniacki v Azarenka in the third round will be a great match as both are tremendous talents. Nothing else really that interesting, except young Aussie Jessica Moore will face American wildcard Melanie Oudin first up which is a great chance for her to get a win at a Slam.

The tournament begins on Monday night at 1:00am. Not the greatest of hours but my IQ will be getting a lot of work and I can't wait!

I cant wait for this either!

Nadal the obvious favourite with Fed as the main challenger. Who else has a good shot at going all the way?

:p It goes until 3:00pm though due to the night matches so you can see a few matches at a decent hour.

I assume Channel 9 will come to the party at about the SF stage as the always do these days. They used to show most of it, then they just showed the second week, now they just show the very late stages. Hopefully Fox does it all.

Well my IQ stuffed up so I only caught two matches.

Blake v Young was a strange, strange match. Blake should have won in straight sets but in typical Blake fashion he lost concentration, started making way too many UE's and the match when to a 5th. Young started playing really well from the 4th set onwards and although he has copped a massive amount of criticism in his short career, I was really impressed. He knows how to hit a winner, from either wing, and he is a great athlete. He's short and pretty thin and his serve is a bit weak, the second serve I'm mainly talking about, but I see no reason why he can't become a very, very good player. He has all the attributes and I get the feeling as soon as he gets a big win under his belt he'll really get going. As for Blake, sorry but I can't stand him. No tactics, no intensity, should've won in 3 but prolonged the game because he loses the plot and starts making careless errors. Safe to say I was really putting my support behind Young, disappointed he couldn't get the win.

As for Nadal, sorry TP but I was somewhat underwhelmed. I saw it as further evidence as to why he won't win the US Open. These courts just don't suit his game and given the struggle he had against a guy ranked in the 130's, he'll have to lift big time when it comes to facing the big guns. He did play some unebelievable shots though including a backhand whip up the line which had an insane amount of curve. I still say if Berdych is there and they are to meet he might be in trouble. But Berdych has to get there first and he's up against talented American Sam Querrey tonight which will be a great match. Being the headcase that he is, and given Querrey is in front of his home crowd, Berdych will probably lose...

My player to watch Sorana Cirstea won in 3 sets against Safarova. She'll face Kuznetsova next which means there's a chance it'll be televised which is good. I don't really rate Svetlana so hopefully she's a chance of an upset.

Some great matches to look forward to today/tonight, the best being Haas v Gasquet.

Gasquet... :p Great game between he and Haas but once again Gasquet decided to lose the plot and then throw it away. Really quite pathetic, for a guy with as much as talent as he has it's just unacceptable. He has all the shots, he can dominate from the net as well as finish points off at the net, and yet he is so mentally fragile. The thing I hate about him is that he gives up, he gives up. Often when he doesn't take the first point in the opponents service game he decides to just hit out and see if he can win free points; he doesn't have what is takes to battle it out. He capitulated badly in the 5th set and the last few games were pathetic to watch. He gifted Haas the double break and was uninterested in the final game. Typical Gasquet game, you always knew he was going to be in trouble when it got to a 5th set.

Ivanovic...well very, very disappointed. It's hard for me to say this as she is my favourite player. She is the world #1 and yet IMO she's overrated. Don't bag me, I just feel though she's become the top player in a very weak time. Henin is gone, Sharapova injured, the Williams sisters are the best on tour but are always injured/unmotivated, and Kuznetsova/Jankovic/Chakvetadze/Dementieva are all good players but really, not that good. Ana's got considerable potential and if she does make the most of her talent she could be a Slam winner many times over but she's just far too streaky. She was terrible today, I know she was coming off a long lay off and her thumb might still be bothering her but she was really bad. Well that's not entirely accurate. First set very good, however thereafter she fell apart. So, so many unforced errors and once again, and this is an issue I've had for ages, her return of serve was DREADFUL. She throws away soooo many points because of wild, unnecessary returns. For a player ranked #1 in the world she just makes too many errors. I know she's that kind of player, she goes for her shots and likes to hit her opponent off the court but enough is enough, she's got to cut down on the UE's. She's shown at the FO that she has a good defensive game, she can stay in the rallies if need be, but she pulls the trigger too soon too often. She is too impatient. I have a bet on the Djokovic/Ivanovic double and I have faith that Nole can get it done however I have very little faith in Ana. Prove me wrong, please.

And well done to young Aussie Jessice Moore who advanced through to the second round after a tough win against a young American wildcard.

Yeh Gasquet is always a disappointment, people would kill tohave his talent, but he has no heart.

Drummond do you thinking Gooch will get past the first round for once? he has beaten Levine before and this is my last leg on one of my multi's. I thought Guccione was nice value at $2.05 considering he has beaten the guy a few times before but yeh, have not see him get out of the first round in a while in a major.

Tough to say. I saw Levine play Nadal at Toronto and he was impressive. He raced out to a 4-1 lead and had break points to go up 5-1 but he wasted them and Rafa eventually got on top and Levine's game started to suffer. He has talent and if he plays anywhere near the level he played against Nadal for most of the first set then he'll beat the Gooch. But who knows, the courts are fast and it could help Gooch and his serve. Keep in mind Levine is only a very short man so if the Gooch serves well he could cause a heap of damage. It all depends on how badly he wants it and if he's prepared to fight it out. If I had to place a bet on it I'd probably go for Levine but it's a good oppertunity for the dud to advance.

Cirstea about to take to the court. :thumbsu:

I dont think its the court, i think he is dead tired, he mentioned it in the post match interview as well, he has played more tennis than anyone this year and some real long tough matches as well.I would not be surprised to see him get knocked out early in this tournament. He must restup and choose his schedule carefully.
