However, I must point out a small error - there have only been 53 games to date in 2011, not 54. Rounds 4, 5 & 6 have each had 3 teams with byes - and thus only 7 games in each of these rounds. Therefore with 4 rounds of 8 games each (= 32) and 3 of 7 games each (= 21), the total games played is only 53.

Hence, it should be as follows -

Considering some of the negitive factors this season like - much worse weather than we have had over the past few seasons and more direct TV games the crowds are holding up well.The AFL is still # 1 code in Australia by a very long way.

Carlton top 4, Essendon top 8 and Richmond showing signs of life will likely have an impact on crowds in the second half of the year, will make little difference up to the end of round 7 one would have thought.

Agreed. Let's assume current trends hold up and through the season Essendon and Carlton remain a top 4 chances with Richmond a top 8 chance....it would be interesting to compare all three clubs R8-24 Melbourne game average for both seasons in that case.....almost certain huge gains.

The trend is down slightly but in all likelihood will recover.

How do Hawthorn only get 40,000 against the saints? Don't they have 50,000+ members by themselves?

Its the 4th largest crowd at a Hawthorn vs St Kilda. There was 49k last year on a Friday Night when St Kilda was 3rd and Hawthorn 7th. Prior that you have to go back to 1997 when 43k turned up and finally back to 1992 when the crowd was also 43k.

BTW - The Friday night crowd of 81.691 was better than good - it was a great crowd given that - The entire MCG public car park was closed, live telecast, it was an out of town Geelong, not Collingwood, home game and most of all, the terrible weather condiitons leading up to the game - freezing cold, heavy rain ;eading up to the game (and some more light rain during) and a strong wind straight from the Antartic adding significantly to the chill factor. Only in Melbourne ...

Well...top of the table clash between two undefeated teams who have won 3 of the past 4 Premierships, and one of those teams has 70,000 members. Plus Melburnians are used to shit weather, and more specifically going to the footy in shit weather.

It's not just that, it's also the expected quality of the opposition.

Additionally, it was also a late start for TV reasons (which makes a difference to transport for people who live far away), and, by Sydney's admittedly non-Canberran standards, it was extremely cold to the extent that people would have stayed home because of that.

Pretty disappointing, but it was always going to be a very small crowd.

Although the 2011 crowds got off to a slow start compared to recent years, the re-emergence of Carlton and Essendon, along with the Hawks reviving after a couple of down years - and even Richmond showing some signs of the Tigers of old, this could still turn out a surprisingly good year - even with the cold and damp.

What's this tell us?? That Brisbane are crap, Gold Coast is a factor, that Melb, Adelaide and Perth are going okay so far. That the Swans might be getting some pre impact from GWS? (plus crap weather and a home game v Port who tend to be box office poison on the road).

and a rolling figure that is up on 2006, a tad down on 2007, up on 2009, a more down on 2008 and 2010 - - given that 2008 is the all time record, 2010 not far off, nor 2007, 2009 a bit further back and 2006 a bit further back, a long way to go, but, AFL crowds are pretty good given the variability across a wide land. I reckon AFL HQ would be pretty pleased so far all things considered.

The NRL avg post Rnd 1 of 16,275 over last 9 rnds is 1,417 down on 2010, and only beats the 2007 figure of 16,203. The NRL might've gone a tad early on predictions of record seasons (but, again, a long way to go).

It's ironic though, that early days people tried to establish a perception that has not been sustained to be played out as reality. (i.e. NRL gangbusters, AFL sluggish). Some of this DID seem to be desperate/futile attempts to devalue AFL broadcast rights??

The weather really has been awful for several of Sydney's games. The only truly disappointing crowd they have drawn was against Essendon in round 2 at Stadium Australia. This has also contributed to some really weak RL crowds (even by RL standards). I doubt there's much GWS impact yet though.

Good to see crowd growth in Adelaide and Perth and with the Bombers and Carlton looking pretty good I'd expect Melbourne crowds to pick-up a little bit as well.
